McCain didn't choose to be a POW, no one does. What he chose was to be a bomber in a war of aggression, dropping incendiaries on peasants and murdering them (unless by some chance he always missed) on the orders of his superiors. Even if he was personally brave, I dispute that bravery is the most relevant descriptor for his participation in crimes against humanity. Others in the U.S. military, more than a few, made a different choice in Vietnam: they mutinied, and they helped put an end to the U.S. invasion of Indochina. That's bravery.
