The Iraq War has finally come home to my family - WAKE UP PEOPLE
Edited on Tue Mar-25-08 10:34 AM by deadlyaj
As Ive posted before Im a 28 y/o Marine Captain who has voted republican his entire life.

I am a marine who served at the tip of the spear and multiple tours in Iraq - I never had a scratch other than a bad fever in my entire time there.

The war came home to my family last night.

My little brother, 18 years old was killed by an IED in southern Iraq.

It is time for us to finally open our eyes to what is happening in Iraq and finally end it!

With the sobering news of 4000 troops and countless iraqi people who have fallen it is time for us to get out.

I was in Walter Reed last year visiting a friend who has 30% burns on his whole body and there in the hallways talking to soldiers was Barack Obama.
No Cameras. No handlers. Just him. Comforting soldiers and making sure that we were having the care that we need and giving us real face time with him
and not just a photo opportunity. After talking to him for almost half an hour and shaking his hand I felt his strength.

Mr. Obama will end this war. My brother has already died in vain -- lets just make sure someone elses daughter or brother will not do the same.

Open your eyes america and look what is happening to your armed forces and your country... 5 years later - maybe we will do something about it. For all of us.

Your prayers are wonderful -- if you really want to help, donate to the Fallen Patriot Fund. This is a Marc Cuban ran
iraqi vet charity that does amazing work. http://www.fallenpatriotfund.org/

or Donate to the Barack Obama Campaign - http://www.barackobama.com/

4000 dead in Iraq - a mosaic of the fallen.

My prayers and sympathy to you and your family. Thank you and your brother for yourservice to our country. No words can express my deep felt sorrow No mother and father should have to lose a child no brother should have to lose a younger brother, I know we lost our son, not to war but a loss is a loss no matter what the circumstances and almost unbearable no matter what the reason. God Bless...

236. The worst kind of lie
It makes me absolutely sick that this individual used a bogus claim of a dead brother to garner sympathy, take a shot at the administration and post a copy of a picture made up of the faces of dead soldiers without the permission of their families.

This kind of scum does the democratic cause no good.

I assume he was one of the four on Sunday.

Damn I wish there were something I could say.

I have been in touch with several families in the course of building the Zeitlangers website.

This past weekend I exchanged emails with the mother of one of the first three KIA in Oct, 2001.

Time can soften the blow a tiny bit, but the hole is there forever.

Thank you for your service, and for your brother's. I know it is hard to write what you did - that he died "in vain." And despite the wrongheadedness of the war, may I respectfully suggest you not look at it that way? It is a meaningless expression but can somehow make the hurt even worse.

He was a casualty of bad planning and bad choices by others, just as is a victim of a drunk driver. If he was doing what he felt was right, trying to make a positive difference, then his individual life was not "in vain."

Look at it this way: if all the hullabaloo about hitting 4000 on Easter Sunday actually influences public opinion some, and accelerates the mobilization to stop this thing, then his loss may save hundreds, even thousands.

37. Oh my gosh. Your family must be devastated. I wish we could end this thing today.
My grandmother had 5 brothers who all joined WWII together. The youngest of her brothers was reluctant, but joined. He died in a training exercise in country. She never got over it.

Her way of handling it was to do something in his memory. She was a devout Catholic. Every X-mas she would make this letter about celebrating Jesus' birthday and his message of peace. She would attach a blue candle for the receiver to have a birthday party for Jesus. By the end of her long life she was sending thousands of them every year. Tens of thousands of Blue Candles were sent out in her lifetime born in her love for her brother. Everyone must find a way to cope. I hope that you can find such a way to celebrate your brother.

He served two tours of duty in Iraq and is an avid supporter of Barack Obama, as well. I gave him a Barack Obama 2008 wristband and he immediately put it on his wrist.

There is a reason so many of our veterans support Barack Obama, and not John "100 year Iraq occupation" McCain.

63. I am sure to get flamed for this, but... was the OP OK with the war when he fought
and while his little brother fought, up until his brother was killed?

He says he has always voted repuke. He sounds like he has the typical repuke orientation to everything - "as long as I do not have to suffer personally, anything is fine. But, if I am personally affected, it is time to change my mind."

The same bullshit as Dick hating and discriminating against gay Americans until HIS daughter is mentioned. Then, he gets all indignant.

I call BULLSHIT.

Sure, the loss of his brother is a personal cost that he and his family has to deal with. Where have they been for the past five fucking years?

83. So, did you defend Cheney when he stood up for his daughter? It is the same
goddamned thing.

I know no one who is personally affected by the war (in the military) and I have been against it from before Day One. I did not have to wait until it "came home" to object. That is the difference between a principled stand and one of personal convenience. America is full of people like the OP who only now are turning against the war and only because it has hurt them. They have no sympathy for the million Iraqis we have killed and tens of millions whose lives we have ruined.

Maybe, if the OP and more of his buddies had stood against the lust for war, his brother would still be alive. How influential was he in getting his little brother into the military? It is obvious that he was a role model. Too bad he did not model more "heroic" behavior. That sounds harsh and it is. But it is the truth.

In the same way that George and Dick sold it as a cakewalk with no consequences and thus, were able to get many to be complicit in the crime against humanity, the OP only now objects because the cost TO HIM is too high.

By his reasoning, I could just as easily support the war because I have not personally suffered, except tangentially. Sorry, but my concern extends beyond my personal life.

186. To quote Dick Cheney........So?
The OP could have been a true hero to America and laid down his weapons. He could have done everything in his power to stop his brother from enlisting. No, TooBigaTent is right. Why now? What about the 100's of thousands of Iraqi's that have died.....oh right they're not US Marines.

Want to make some admends? Now, right now, resign if you are still in the Marines, lay down your arms and take up the cause of peace. Do what John kerry did when he came home from Vietnam.

You can't bring your brother back but you may prevent someone else's brother from the same fate.

85. As so for all of us...
How did you come to your epiphany? Did it spring full blown from the center of your forehead? For most it comes from an experience that allows one to see differently. Sometimes it is an epiphany, the sudden ah ha! moment; sometimes it's a series of adjustments.

Your attitude would be useful if you were face to face with an enemy who wished to do you deadly harm. I would be very surprised to find out that you are currently in that situation.

Is this really the best you can do with all the resources you currenlty have available?

Edited on Tue Mar-25-08 03:45 PM by TooBigaTent
I present a point of view and all I get is ignores and incoherent personal attacks.

Let me ask a direct, simple question. If one of the Bush twins were to be killed in Iraq (I know it would never happen, but assume it did - maybe on a book tour) and George then decided that he would end it because the cost came home to him, would you be sympathetic to the Bush family?

How is the OP any different?

And please try and clarify whatever you were trying to say.

94. OK, how's this?
From your tone:

I believe you're a self-indulgent child who's hiding behind a keyboard. I believe that the phony rage you're projecting is self-aggrandizement.

Would I feel personal sympathy for Bush if one of his children were killed in a war? Yep, I sure would.

Would I depend on him changing as a integral part of a way to end the war? Un-uh, no way.

Would I hope that the experience might move him to re-examine his thinking? Absolutely.

If he did re-examine his thinking and decided to end the war would I think that was a good thing? You damn betcha I would.

Bush's karma is his, I just want to stop getting people killed in this stupid war. What's your goal?

There, is that clear enough?

149. It takes courage to post that, and I agree with you
Is it somewhat heartless to state the truth when the OP's brother has so recently been killed? Probably. But that doesn't mean it's not the truth, and the truth hurts.

We liberals warned everybody in the run up to this war. We were the ones who saw through the lies, who marched in the streets, who tried with all our might to stop this war from happening before it did.

We were mocked from all sides. We were called unpatriotic traitors. We were called weak, evil, terrorists, you name it.

Every single warmonger who supported this war is responsible for every death, including the ones in their own family. That's the truth. If you can't take it, tough. War is hell. We tried to tell you.

Instead of admonishing the OP, even if you feel the way you do, why not embrace him/her? Does it matter how/when someone's eyes are opened or that they are opened? Perhaps the OP will now fight harder than even you will to end the war.

I have no words that can confort your loss other then to say I am sorry. As a pro-military democrat I pray for an end to this war each day so that people like you who serve with honor can come home. my prayers did not help your brother and for that I am sorry. Yesterday I watched Dana Perino tell reporters with a straight face that most families that have lost a loved one in Iraq have told the president not to leave so that thier son, daughter, husband, wife, father, mother, did not die in vain. This president has wasted the precious resource of this nation to satisfy his blood lust as well as his desire to make his friends rich. I don't understand why so many in the military love Bush when he treats them like a disposable diaper.

Saudi Shura council to discuss plan for sudden radioactive hazards
Riyadh (dpa) - The Saudi Shura council will secretly discuss national plans to deal with any sudden nuclear and radioactive hazards that may affect the kingdom following experts' warnings of possible attacks on Iran's Bushehr nuclear reactors, media reports said Saturday.
The Saudi-based King Abdul-Aziz City for Science and Technology has prepared a proposal that encapsulates the probabilities of leaking nuclear and radiation hazards in case of any unexpected nuclear attacks in Iran, the Okaz Saudi newspaper said. The Saudi Shura or consultative council plans to debate the proposal on Sunday.

The power plants in the south-western Iranian port of Bushehr were built with German assistance in 1974 and resumed with Russian aid in 1992, after it had been stopped by the Islamic revolution. dpa str es pb

This thread shows that people are aware that service men and women have a double burden. The burden we all share of being citizens of a country that has lost its way and the terrible extra burden of having to pay the ultimate price for that. I wish we could in some way share that burden with you. We cannot. We can simply say 'Thank you' for bearing these burdens with such grace an dignity.

My tiny little son probably thought he was being abused, however I didn't mean for the government to get my son who really was small, I would have gone to Canada with him to keep him out of the army, I came down on him hard because I saw it coming another war, I paddled his hinnie for a B. I didn't mean for out government to send him off to get killed, but guess what he started to try for an accademy the air force, he wanted to fly , took some of the test, then he decided he would never be able to fly because of his eyes, then after he finished college, he even thought about it again but knew his eyes were bad and he had a wife by that time.... But I am sick of war, someother way can do the job, I think mostly we need to remember Dwight David Eisnhowers last speech and what was said at the end of his speech, poor kids fight for people like Bush and Cheney to fill their pockets

I feel so badly for you and will remember you in my prayers, I have two grandsons one 28 , with terrible eyes and then one 11, we will probably be in a war with China by the time he is of age to fight.

11 when Sept 11 occurred.

What kind of person enlists _willingly_ into a war without end? A good one. An unselfish one. Even if he was there to fulfill some fantasies of glory for himself, he was still there, in uniform, in harms way next to everyone else in his unit.

What kind of father would he have been? What kind of community leader? What kind of husband? Likely a very good one. The world is less with every passing of someone like him.

Rest in Peace Warrior.

little brother and I hate this stupid senseless war. I watched "Sir, No Sir" not long ago, and since our "leaders" in Wash DC (yes every one of them) don't seem to care if this war ends or not, it really is going to have to be up to soldiers like yourself to finally speak up and say I'M MAD AS HELL AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE. I truly do thank you and your little brother for your service - your job is a terrible job that I know I could never do it. Thank you for speaking up. Please tell your Mom and Dad how sorry we are.

We have no troops in southern Iraq and the Dept. of Defense said as of today (3/25/2008) the most recent (since Feb 1st.) IED deaths have all been in Baghdad which if you have been in Iraq you know it is not anywhere in the south.

With very little mention. On a regualr basis (including several over the last few days.)

I don't see that his OP labels his younger brother as a Marine (The OP says that he himself is a Marine.)

As a contractor.

124. Not in vain
It is very important to separate the war from the warrior. Your brother honored America. Perhaps his death will intensify the focus that this administration needs to be replaced by a Democratic administration. They will take the sacrifice of your brother and emphasize that leaders must not send men and women into war except for the defense of the US and when all other options are off the table.

I will do my best to remember him and his colleagues with honor.

Edited on Tue Mar-25-08 08:55 PM by defendandprotect
It makes me feel even more strongly that no 18 year old should be able to enlist --
I wish it were so!

I wish we could undo this for you and your family --- move the world backwards ---
when only 8 short years ago we had a world and a country on such a different path.

It's infuriating, shocking, sad ---
I'm sure that it's making us all here feel the anger over this war all over again.
I wonder if we had impeached Bush after last year's elections if we might not now
be looking at 4,000 dead -- 100,000 wounded --- and 5 years of occupation.

I'm so sorry for you and your family. I will be supporting Obama and thank you for
telling us the story about his visit to the hospital.

152. I'm Sorry About the Loss of Your Brother...
But... it took the death of a brother to wake up people from their republican stupor?

God Help this Country if right-wing propaganda has saturated the American consciousness to the degree that it takes the death of a family member to bring people back to reality! This brother's death was a direct result of his personal advisors, who collectively ignored many realities of the world, and how they influenced a young marine's life with their myopic worldview.

Perhaps, my assessment of this behavior sounds harsh, but military officers must accept personal accountability in the death of young servicemembers. It's great to ask others to help now, after the fact, but it was an officer's job to lead, and many actions in this instance display an abdication of responsibility. I was a naval officer for 7 years until a disabling injury rendered me unable to serve. The world teaches people harsh lessons, and requires leaders to anticipate problems. True leadership permits people to anticipate problems before they become catastrophic events!

182. I Am So Terribly Sorry
My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. This is a terrible, senseless and horrifying loss. I have always been against this waste of life known as the "Iraq War" and all of the loss. I grieve and cry every time I see the damage done and the toll that this occupation has taken on so many. I keep hoping that this occupation will end, SOON.

187. My Condolences To You and Your Family
Each and every death of our soldiers and innocent Iraqi's, each and every injury both physical and mental to our soldiers and innocent Iraqi's is a tragedy. That the Bush Administration has not been made to pay for their crimes against the people of this planet is a grave injustice to these brave men and women.

Peace to you and your family and to all the families who have suffered.

Sorry for your loss buddy, but your brother knew what he was signing up for. What I can't stand is people signing up to go kill other people and then when it happens to them, they are "suddenly against the war", and see how wrong the whole thing is. I guess thats what it takes to wake up the blind. If you are smart and learn something from this you will never allow another person in your family to join the military and be swindled by an aristocrat like Bush.

He was just a kid, and he was killed in a senseless war. How dare you post something so mean and insensitive to a grieving brother?! Have you no honor or decency?

You know, I have never heard that crap at any peace rally I've ever been in. Not once. All I've ever heard is that we need to bring the troops home now, not that the dead got what they deserved. That's disgusting.

The sooner we get the US out of Iraq, the sooner we can go back to the lives we had that didn't require us to take such steps to protect 18 year old children.

When you said you have been in a peae rally, you really meant it. Nice and peacefull!

That's not how I was raised, sorry. I was raised to believe that we need to treat all with respect and act with honor, even if those we disagree with don't. It's called rising above the fray.

What are you saying about peace rallies? The ones I've been to have been run by pacifists, so yeah, they've been peaceful. You know that non-violent protest idea that Gandhi liked so much? It works.

Have you seen anyone with his abilities? I haven't. Staging sit-ins worked in the 1960's. People today expect something different. That leaves the other alternative of speaking out forcefully when no one is watching so we will be heard.

218. Yes, because speaking out forceably in US history's always worked.
It worked for the Whisky Rebellion--oh, wait, no, it didn't. It worked in the Hoovervilles in Washington DC--oh, wait, no, it didn't work then, either. It worked for the Black Panthers--oh, wait, no, it didn't. Hmm. I can't think of a single instance other than the Civil War that cost so many American lives where violence actually did anything.

Women got the vote without violence (though a lot of violence was done to them, that's for sure). African Americans got equal rights to vote and live in the 50's and '60s (though that's still obviously a work in progress) without violence. Teens got the right to vote at the age of 18 without violence.

Just because we have many leaders now doesn't mean hearts and minds aren't being changed. We're going to win the next election, and then, when we have the power, we'll see change.

I've seen the questioning, and while I prefer not to question the OP, simply because then it turns into a he-said, she-said argument, it doesn't change the fact that others have lost brothers over there. Brothers, husbands, fathers, mothers, sisters, wives--all dead for a senseless war. That hasn't changed.

197. What can one say - Heartfelt sorrow for your family. As one great General once said in 1961........
(I believe the U.S. needs a strong Military but not a private run Military that takes the money and runs!)

Eisenhower warns us of the military industrial complex.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8y06NSBBRtY

President of the United States (and former General of the Army) Dwight D. Eisenhower later used the term in his Farewell Address to the Nation on January 17, 1961:

“A vital element in keeping the peace is our military establishment. Our arms must be mighty, ready for instant action, so that no potential aggressor may be tempted to risk his own destruction...

This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence — economic, political, even spiritual — is felt in every city, every statehouse, every office of the federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this development. Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources and livelihood are all involved; so is the very structure of our society.

In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals so that security and liberty may prosper together.”

For the millions of dead, maimed, bereaved and paupered people, and for the thousands trapped in the goddamned war, let's end it. Do not rest until it's over, and then do no t rest until we prevent the next useless war-for-profit.

206. Taking a stand
I am sorry for your loss. The pain you must be in is hard to imagine.

Might I ask a question? Since you rightly feel that this war is profoundly wrong and that both civilians and soldiers are dying senselessly... why have you not resigned? You are a young man, have a college degree and don't agree with the war. I don't understand why you haven't been open about this, particularly since you feel it is morally wrong. The USMC doesn't prosecute people for expressing disagreement. They won't promote you, they won't make you lead Marines into combat, they won't let you retire. But that oughtn't to be a concern, you rightly don't embrace what they are doing.

Take a stand! Tell us your brother's name so that we can send cards and flowers. Surely the continued loss of thousands of lives in Iraq is worth standing up and being counted and heard. It will help you to heal and help to expatiate the horror that you must feel inside knowing that you have unwillingly participated in this carnage but can help to do something to stop it now. You can wash the blood from your hands!

You can quit the Marines right now with few if any repercussions and make your case to the American public.
You can show the Marines and the world that like any good Marine, you have the courage of your convictions.

DO IT FOR YOUR BROTHER!!

Sending prayers and thoughts your family's way. I can't imagine how you must feel right now.

Thanks for this thread - I will be sending it to my Republican relatives and asking them to at least THINK about what is being done in their names.

This is a totally false post. The last 18 year old was killed in August, 2007. We have no troops in southern Iraq (or American contractors for those who tried to give him that out). Everyone who posted here with their condolences were taken for suckers by the OP. He should be banned from DU. I knew this guy was never in Iraq himself because of the terms he used in the OP. I doubt he has ever seen someone from the military let along be a "Captain". What bullshit.

232. This bogus thread
I couldn't agree more with your assessments. Apparently my sarcasm was less than subtle. As a lifetime democrat and retired/disabled First Sergeant, I can tell you this crock jumped off the page. This thread has been being used as an example on a Huffingtonpost thread as evidence that bereaved relatives support the use of the images of their dead family members to take a pot shot at our idiot president. In fact, it was the only example anyone could come up with. You would have to search very very very hard to find a vet or family member that would appreciate seeing his dead blood relative's image used without permission, to make a political statement. Period. I don't like the war or the president, but I don't think the montage is an appropriate way to say it. Not unless of course, you have the huevos to ask the dead kid's mom and dad how they felt about it first.
