Clark Supporters... looking for a book recommendation
Right now, I'm reading Howard Dean: A Citizen's Guide. I'd like to have a Clark book ready to read right after. I'm looking for something that has some biography element to it and also some of what he would like to do as president. Does a book like that exist? I saw that he has a book about Bosnia, Kosovo, etc and I would like to read that to learn more about what was done there... but does that book have biographical info on him or is it mostly about the military operations? Thanks in advance for any recommendations. I'd be open to reading an e-book, too, if he has any online.
:)

2. Thanks, but
Thanks but I was wondering if anyone who read a Clark book could recommend one over the other. I saw the ones on Amazon, but don't know if they have a biographical element to them or if they are just about the military operations.

The Antonia Felix book looks good, but doesn't come out until April.

3. Sorry about that.
the articles help at all?

the bio is obviously crafted by the campaign.

I agree about the not-yet released book!

Good luck.

4. Yeah, I read the bio on his site
It's very impressive! I'd like to read more (either in his own words or written by someone else, either way gives a good perspective) in detail about himself. I feel like (since I'm still undecided) it's unfair of me to read a Dean biography, yet not read a corresponding book from Clark. I've got my candidates narrowed down to Dean and Clark (on an equal level) and still a little love for Kerry, too. ;)

By the way, welcome to DU, Alice! :)

8. The articles are written by him,
aren't they? Or is that just speechwriters?

Thanks for the welcome! :toast:

9. Pragmatism has firmed up my
support for Clark, but the more I read and see of him, the more I like the guy.

I have a little love left for Kerry, too...and a lot for Edwards!

5. Winning Modern Wars, then read AL FRANKENS book
Edited on Fri Jan-02-04 10:58 AM by xultar
The chapters on Clark sealed my support for
General Clark

You'll get Clarks true stance on War in general...no pun intended.

6. Are Winning Modern Wars and Waging Modern Wars the same book?
I noticed the titles are very similar and one is hardcover and one is paperback so I wondered if they changed the title slightly when they went to paperback? Or are they two different books?

10. Winning Modern Wars is Clarks critique of *'s Iraq War
Edited on Fri Jan-02-04 11:04 AM by rmpalmer
I'm a Dean supporter, but Clark runs a close second for me. Very good book where Clark shows how the war was mostly fought correctly by the military, but what he feels were the mistakes * and his administration made in the aftermath and the fact that they fought this war at all instead of continuing their efforts against Osama.

It's 200 pages, so it's a fast read.

Convinces me Clark certainly has the foreign policy expertise to serve as President, VP, or a cabinet level position.

11. Waging Modern War--Better of the Two
Clark's book about the Bosnia/Kosovo conflict best illustrates not only his skill with military matters, but also balancing the interests of NATO within the nasty political circles of DC.
I've never read a memoir (of sorts) where the author gets his arse chewed every chapter!
Historical and Pentagon records back up Clark's contentions, including the infamous backstabbing by Cohen and Gen Shelton! And I got to tell him so in person!

Don't let the list of characters and town names with 16 consonants and one vowel scare you. Clark keeps you in context throughout the book!

12. in addition to the ones mentioned
Edited on Fri Jan-02-04 12:09 PM by Vote_Clark_In_WI
I know that Samantha Power's book, A Problem from Hell : America and the Age of Genocide has some on Clark, though I don't know how much. I just gave that book to my son, who is a Poli Sci major and has written several papers on genocide. Maybe I'll borrow it for a few days to see what she says about Clark.

War in a Time of Peace: Bush, Clinton, and the Generals
by David Halberstam has some on Clark

The Long Gray Line by Rick Atkinson - I have heard that there are several mentions of Clark in that, as well - from his West Point days.

I have not read any of these, but I would like to in the near future. These would give you perspectives of people who have worked with Clark in various capacities.

edited to add: thanks for the reminder on those books! I just went to my library's website and reserved the two we don't own. I'll give my book report in a few days!

14. I saw Samantha Power introduce Clark at an event
She is a very impressive well informed woman, very committed to human rights and justice. She is passionate about the positive things Clark did to reverse ethnic cleansing in Europe. Though I haven't yet read it, I understand that her book does say a lot about Clark, his priorities, and his effectiveness in advancing them. I think you should put that on your list in addition to Clark's books. Thanks for asking.

15. I'm reading it now
I think I may see in it the roots of Clark's conflict with the Pentagon, Tom, although I haven't finished yet. It has some on Clark and all positive, yet not as much as expected. But to gain an understanding of humanitarian/military intervention in times of genocide, this book is outstanding. It's beautifully written and very hard to put down.

16. Tom, I saw that introduction as well
What an impressive woman. That's what made me look for her book. I think it was Frenchie4Clark who mentioned that that book had won the Pulitzer Prize.

When we gave my son the book, he said that he had been looking for the book at the bookstore (thank goodness he didn't find it) because he had just seen her give a talk on tv and was very interested in her. Ha, I guess I did ok with THAT Christmas present for a kid who can be hard to shop for.

17. That's the one I would recommend since it was written by a third party
Therefore is more impartial.

Power's words were instrumental in my decision to back Clark.

There hasn't been a serious biography of Wes Clark, although books already mentioned include material on him.
