Poll: Edwards endorsement of Clinton wouldn't do much for her in NC
PPP Poll: Obama Opens Wide Lead in North Carolina

A new Public Policy Polling survey in North Carolina shows Sen. Barack Obama dramatically expanding his lead over Sen. Hillary Clinton, 55% to 34%.

"This 21 point lead is the largest he has shown in any NC polling to date, and an indication that the Wright controversy isn't causing him any long term harm at least in this state."

Key finding: "The poll also showed that a possible John Edwards endorsement wouldn't do much for Hillary Clinton's prospects in the state. 31% of voters who are either undecided or support Obama said an Edwards endorsement would make them less likely to vote for Clinton, compared to just 12% who said it would make them more likely to support her. A majority of voters, 57%, said an Edwards endorsement would have no impact on them one way or the other."

5. Yeah, but we want people to think she can
We want it to look close going in. 21 point poll margins this far out are bad for Obama...now if he does not win by 21 points he looks like he underperformed. Of course, given the week we've had it's nice to see some good poll numbers.

3. If Edwards was smart, he'd get his endorsement in before the vote is cast.
Unless, of course, he's trending toward the unstable candidate.

9. After her antics today she deserves no sympathy as far as I am concerned....
She deliberately brought up the Rev. Wright thing to deflect her Snipergate problem.... I hope she takes a hint soon and gets the hell out...

14. Obama is just another politician.
He is packaged in pretty paper and looks nice, but underneath all of that, he is just another politician.

12. They actually did shift the polls there very significantly
Obama was in danger of being totally blown out there - she was ahead by 37%. So, to get it down to 15% meant that he got a good share of teh delegates - versus possibly none.

10. Obama will win NC....
both Dem gubernatorial candidates have already endorsed him. He will be introduced tomorrow by Greensboro's mayor who is the first ever African American, and female to boot. He has huge support in this state.

A note on today's poll
Just a reminder of what I posted last Friday:

One other note on our next poll- we are changing our universe from folks who voted in the 2004 or 2006 primaries to folks who voted in the 2004 primary, 2006 primary, or 2006 general. That's who we called for our very accurate Democratic polls in Wisconsin, Texas, and Ohio. Given that it's clear now we will have a high intensity primary in North Carolina as well it seems like the time is right to make that change here.

Some of Obama's rise from last week can probably be attributed to us calling more folks who do not have a history of voting in primaries- that seems to be a group he has done quite well with so far in this primary season.
