9. It's a common retail practice...
You see it in the sporting goods industry a lot. When a player in a particular city is traded, his old team jersey is immediately discounted at local vendors as that is the only way to clear out the built-up wholesale inventory the retailer has already paid for. The manufacturer almost NEVER takes back the obsolete goods. Otherwise you'd be sitting with a back room full of non-current, unusable stuff no one wants any more.

Extrapolate that however you will...

11. Sometimes people get inventive.
I was in NYC about 10 days after 9/11 and a lot of the random-stuff vendors on Canal Street had dusted off flag/yellow ribbon buttons that obviously dated back to the first Gulf War about 10 years before.

Like yesterday's newspaper. Who would really want it for anything except utilitarian purposes?
