Loves Hillary

Update 3/26/08 3:34 p.m. PST: Sharyl Attkisson (CBS), who accompanied Clinton on the 1996 trip, wrote:

"To be sure, it was not the "safest" trip for a First Lady to take: there were serious risks in traveling to Bosnia, even for the President's wife under the vigilant protection of the U.S. military. It took some guts for her to go." CBS News report 3/24/08.

We all know by now that Hillary didn't land amidst gunfire in Bosnia in Spring 1996.

But it would be a tragic disservice if the MSM buried Hillary's bravery and accomplishments beneath the tarmac story. This was not a relaxed "tea and cookies" kind of visit, as Alegre

On the question of how dangerous Bosnia was when Hillary visited, my friend wrote:

March 1996 was not a pleasant time for living in Bosnia...I believe that Hillary made a clumsy statement when she mentioned the sniper fire in Tuzla but regardless her point of potential danger in coming to Bosnia shortly after DPA (Dayton Peace Accord) was very valid....Late February 1996 was the time when the reintegration process of Sarajevo surrounding municipalities started. On February 23 the first of 85 federal police arrive in Vogosca and during the following weeks Sarajevo suburb of Ilidza passes from Bosnian Serb to government control. On March 19 Grbavica passes into government hands and Sarajevo becomes a fully reunited city. This reintegration process caused a lot of tensions. I could not find any media reports on people killed during that process but on March 13 the BBC reported that "Muslim gangs from Sarajevo continue to terrorize Bosnian Serbs who have stayed in Ilidza. More than 100 incidents have so far been reported." Also, there were evidences of anti-American sentiments among Bosnia Serbs at that time. For example on March 21 the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Madeleine Albright is jeered by Bosnian Serbs yelling "you bitch" and "you fascist" during her visit to Vukovar. They pelt her motorcade with rocks, damaging the vehicles but causing no injuries.

As for Hillary and Bill's contributions to Bosnia, my friend wrote:

The people in BiH respect (and love if you will) the Clintons enormously. We believe that only thanks to US and especially President Clinton the war in BiH was finally stopped. In terms of Hillary, she is remembered still today for visiting our country at a time following the peace accords when it was still too dangerous for many international visitors. Hillary also was responsible for the AIHA (American International Health Alliance) partnership between Tuzla hospital and a Buffalo, New York hospital. This partnership was made at the direct personal request from Hillary to USAID (United States Agency for International Development). The First Lady will be remembered in BiH for her noble actions.
