Who would be a better female candidate? |
|
Since Hillary's run is looking to be historic in the "more negative by the day" sense, who do you think would be a worthy female Democratic candidate? One who doesn't carry the messy Clinton legacy? One who wouldn't be an automatic lightning rod? One who possesses the intelligence and tenacity to lead the nation without the whole megalomaniac thing?

Edited to add:
Richardson would have been a decent latino candidate.
I'd frankly rather have Sharpton or Mosley-Braun as the first African-American president. Even better: Barbara Lee.

Remember, Obama came out of nowhere: if you'd asked five years ago who was likely to be the first black president, you'd have had no idea. Born leaders are where you find them.
That said, there's a couple candidates. Kathleen Sebelius is pretty good--despite being the governor of Kansas, she's anti-gun, opposes an amendment to ban gay marriage, opposes the death penalty, is pro-education, etcetera.
Barbara Boxer is great, but has a long history in the Senate, which traditionally makes it hard for people to get elected. Too many votes that can be spun negatively, etcetera.
Christine Gregoire of Washington is also a solid exec with good Democratic policy gravitas.

Gregoire has been gaining in popularity it seems. I wasn't sure about her initially, but she seems to have done a good job of uniting both Democrats and Republicans. I just wish they would do something about Seattle's HORRID transportation issues.

I admit to being only vaguely familiar with her, but I know she drilled the hell out of Condoleeza Rice on her Secretary of State confirmation and also didn't want to certify the electoral votes in 2004. She seems like one tough cookie. Has she ever hinted that she'd like to run for President?

Maybe I'm not a true feminist if I can acknowledge it, but I did notice Sebelius' looks and think they were perfect for a woman in politics. She's handsome. This is important because if she were cute like Governor Granholm (or overly sexy) she'd could encounter challenges being taken seriously. If she were ugly, men (and some women) would dismiss her and attribute negative mental characteristics based on the physical.
It isn't fair to women that we are judged this way - we have to be as smart and good as a man, but good looking as well if we want success. However, that is the way things are, and it is not going to change anytime soon. So, I don't get mad at men having this view, it's just sad. I at least give credit to men (and women) who acknowledger the bias.

42. There's no female candidate who even approaches Hillary's stature |
|
Give me a break. Put the other names mentioned in this thread in a national primary and they'd be scrambling to reach 3-5%.
And that's for the foreseeable, if Hillary fails, which appears all but certain.
I'm convinced any female candidate would be butchered by the media, if running for the presidency. I posted that on many sites in 2006. Hillary as unlikable is severely overblown. Put any woman in that threatening position and the white male establishment will recoil in strike-mode horror. It reminds me of David Brock's book, "Blinded By The Right," where he describes how his hit pieces on females were the biggest sellers and biggest hits of American Spectator, with the publisher begging him to find more females he could attack in print.

Do you not know what stature means? In this society name happens to be one thing going for you. Not one name in this thread would invoke any sort of interest.
Obama was an "unknown" in the mass media but the reality is that he has ridden the "Horse Race" that the media has created from the start. They wanted to pit two "historical candidates" up against one another. And they did.
