Rev. Wright - Its A Wonderful (Italian-American) Life!
Edited on Thu Mar-27-08 01:07 PM by FLDem5
I am Italian enough to have a father who was allowed membership into the local Italian-American club.

I, of course, am not allowed, as he married a Polish woman, and I am not Italian enough. That's how serious they are about membership. My dad's parents were off the boat. I took dance lessons there as a child and learned the Tarantella.

Funny thing, my mother's Polish family considered her to be marrying down, when she wed an Italian (which cracks me up!)

So I guess I may be the demographic who is supposed to be outraged by that other post, and honestly....

"whaaaa??" Am I really supposed to be offended by 'garlic noses'?

Really?

Really?!

I just can't be. Its too silly. For perspective, I have never been discriminated against because I have brown hair and brown eyes and I tan nicely. If I had been, I might react differently. But I haven't. I'm just a regular old white girl who doesn't get followed around by employees in Claire's Boutique.

In all seriousness, it reminds my of the line from "Its A Wonderful Life" when Mr. Potter says, "aren't you sick of playing nursemaid to a bunch of garlic eaters" and the scene where the Italian family moves into Bailey Park with their (stereotypical) 9 kids and a couple of goats. That always makes me laugh.

Reverand Wright's quote makes me laugh.

 <---------- see, that's me laughing!

Have a nice day.

5. Yes I think Andrea Mitchell found pages from the church
Apparently TUCC publishes a magazine called Trumpet and there were articles in there about Jews and Italians she found somewhere.

7. Well, you could ask some Italian-Americans.
But you might not get an answer that pleases you.

I remember when a certain politician drew an analogy between two elections in which both African-Americans won, but one later lost the larger contest. That politician was universally reviled for his remark on the grounds of intolerable racism. There was not a drop of racism in it, but that wasn't my call to make.

Imagine, now, if he had directly called African-Americans "chitlin-noses" -- or even used the phrase "shuck and jive".

10. the difference is that Italian-Americans are not discriminated against
Edited on Thu Mar-27-08 01:34 PM by FLDem5
at least not for a very long time. And they certainly weren't enslaved here, or hung from trees or forced to use a different water fountain.

FWIW, I just called my dad and asked him, with no context, if he would be offened if someone called him a garlic nose.

He laughed and said, "what?"

"A garlic nose", I said.

"thats stupid" he said, "why would someone call me that."

"Because you're Italian".

"oh jeez, did someone call you that?"

"no, I was just wondering if you find that offensive?"

"come on. I've got better things to do, like play golf"

"Okay, Dad, love ya', Bye!"

"Goodbye my crazy daughter"

click.

13. Italian Americans suffered the largest mass lynching in American history.
1891, in New Orleans. You could look it up. Or you could wait an hour or two until some news media wonk finds it on Google.

Then there was the case of Niccolo Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti.

What, you thought Italian-Americans were all sharp-dressed mobsters and sexy crooners in sharkskin suits?

I'm glad that your father at least has a tough hide. You, on the other hand, have been exquisitely sensitive to every nuance of every statement from Hillary, Bill, any and all of their supporters. And I guarantee you that there are going to be some pissed-off Italian-Americans.

I can be quite charitable toward Rev. Wright. But he has a very bad habit, and his bad habits are Obama's bad habits. (Remember Bill and James from last night?) The non-stop anti-Clinton hatefest is NOT justifiable in the context of a holier-than-thou campaign with a flambuoyant preacher whose rhetoric was partly learned from Don Rickels.

At least Rickels was funny -- and could take it as well as dish it out.

If you, as an Italian-American, take the air out of the latest HRC smear meme, what are the rest of us going to laugh about?

I love watching the faux hysterical selective outrage. It's priceless comedy

You have a nice day too :hi:

12. don't people still take garlic capsules?
I love garlic. Just the smell of it sauteing in my olive oil makes my stomach rumble.

I also like to sprinkle it (and oregano) on my pizza.

Italian Americans were going to be angry at that comment, and not the actual speech.

Does it make more sense now?

18. I wouldnt accuse wright of being politically correct, thats for damn sure...
but he was talking about the italians who were busy conquering the holy land at the time. And crucifying people like Jesus. But like i said, wright sure as hell isnt politically correct in his language.

23. Proud Italian American
There is a great song sung by Michael Bolton and Anna Tantangelo called "Il Mio Amico" and there is a verse "uguale a noi, e che siamo figli dello stesso Dio" same as us, and that we are children of the same God.
