BREAKING: 1 in 10 DEMOCRATS thinks Obama is muslim...
1/4th of Democrats who think Obama is a muslim will vote for Clinton in the GE but not Obama.

It turns out the people most likley to think Obama is a muslim are:

rural, uneducated, old, white, women from the midwest...(I have seen these demographics before...hmm...)

5. What's funny is that those who think he is a muslim...
for the most part have a problem with Rev. Wright.... they are either too stupid to connect the two faux scandals or they are trying to find an excuse not to vote for him. (IMHO because he is black and they are racists)

11. Exactly.
Most of these people probably don't REALLY think he's a Muslim; they just need an excuse to vote against him that doesn't betray their racism.

25. bingo, mckeown1128
one of my oldest friends and I had an exchange about the time of the county conventions in CO here. SHe said that she would never vote for Obama. When I asked he "why- because he was black?"- knowing that being raised in MS, she tends to be a little bit of a racist, but she said "No, because he is a Muslim." I even got that email from her last week, circulating about Obama being a Muslim, stating that it was verified by Snopes. Aaarghhh. Such ignorance is disappointing.

58. Feel free to send this back to her..
I posted this back in January.. feel free to copy & paste it into an email to send it to her. If her REAL reason for not voting for him is because of that, she no longer has that reason. If her REAL reason is because he's black, she's got no hope. :)

people who are racist don't generally admit it...even to themselves... they have to come up with other reasons to "hate" a black person... you know like imagining that said black person is a muslim pretending to be christian AND is going to a church with a "bl... umm.. scary preacher."

45. I seriously doubt it
which is exactly what I referred to in my first post in this thread.

Americans seem to have this peculiar notion that polls- wherever they come from are sacrosanct. That because they're "scientific" that therefore they're valid and reflect the actual attitudes and beliefs of the general- or to segments of the population.

Sometimes they'll swallow the most absurd notions- like the poll a couple of weeks on DU that asserted 20% or so of Americans believe the sun revolves around the earth!

Even so, for they few who may be laboring under misconceptions, you'll usually get better results by trying to educate them when it comes to factual matters than you will by insulting them.

the entire religion. In the meantime, people will continue to think there is a general complacency regarding such matters, just as people do regarding the Catholic leadership not having a firmer hand on the pedophiles among their ranks.

It's not exactly easy for people like us to combat "Islamophobia" when there are plenty of Islamists out there still giving people enough to be afraid about. The more moderate Muslims need to be more vocal about the tenets of their religion and openly condemn those who don't hold to them.

but Muslims calling for peace isn't interesting enough for the news networks to report on. They would rather report on the tiny minority of muslims who are scary and make threats. That is what sells papers. That is what brings in the voters. That is what open's peoples wallets.

So, don't push the "moderate Muslims aren't doing enough line"... because they are trying.

63. They're the independents and Republicans who now choose to call themselves Democrats
If lots of people who are not lifelong faithful Democrats but see that more of the same is not an option, we should see some 10%-level shifts in polls like this. They may be mis- or under-informed -- how can they not be, given what passes as news in the mainstream media?

It's all about education. Informed, rational voters will not vote Republican this fall. We need to see that the electorate face the facts; if that happens, we win. (Unless... well, I need not go into detail about proper vote counts, voter suppression, etc.)
