David Sirota: "Is Wright Right About Racism?"
"Since the 1960s, bigotry has undergone an aesthetic makeover. Today, the most pernicious racists do not wear pointy hoods, scream epithets and anonymously burn crosses from behind masks. They don starched suits, recite sententious bromides and stage political lynchings before television cameras. For proof, behold the mob stalking Barack Obama's former pastor, Jeremiah Wright.

Sean Hannity, Fox News' own George Wallace, turned a fire hose on Wright for his church's focus. " is all about the black community," Hannity thundered, claiming that means Wright supports "a black-separatist agenda."

Pat Buchanan billy-clubbed Wright for saying, "God damn America." The MSNBC commentator, who avoided the draft, implied that Wright, a former Marine, lacks sufficient loyalty to country. ...Fox's Charles Krauthammer berated Wright for saying the 9/11 attacks were "chickens coming home to roost." Krauthammer labeled the pronouncement "vitriolic divisiveness" despite our government acknowledging the concept of "blowback" — or retaliation — Wright was referencing.

Why is it "controversial" for one pastor to address the black community, racism and blowback, but OK for another pastor to slander an entire religion? Why is it news that one candidate knows a sometimes-impolitic clergyman, but not news that his opponent associates with an anti-Semite? Does the double standard prove the dominant culture despises a black man confronting taboos, but accepts whites spewing hate? Does the very reaction to Wright show he's right about racism?"

12. Ask almost any racial or ethnic group
Blacks, Latinos, Asians, Jews, Gays, the handicapped, whatever you want to name, yes, there is discrimination and some could of -ism to go along with it.

To deny it is ignorance. To exploit it for political gain is inexcusable. To try and bridge the gap and erase the rhetoric is bravery.

20. Being half Native American myself...
I couldnt agree more. We live in a country where the "patriots" murdered our ancestors and stole their land. But theres arent enough of us left for anyone to care. Got your flag pin?

6. Probably why Sirota is getting so many hate emails about this article
He was on our local radio this morning discussing the article and the issues with Jay Marvin. Marvin gave Sirota the whole last hour of his program to discuss it and take calls.

10. It's "controversial" because it's wrong. And it's not "OK" for another pastor to say something
"impolitic" or "slanderous" either.

The fault, Dear Journalists, is not in What's OK, but in What is REPORTED.

This is a desperate attempt to blame someone, anyone--oooooh, how about "THE DOMINANT CULTURE?"--that sounds like a good Boogeyman, save the fucking journalists who don't do their job, with a convoluted "two wrongs make a right (or a Wright?)" argument.

Let's talk about the mote in the culture's eye, and ignore the fucking picnic table in the eye of the community of journalists, who lazily grab the first thing, like a pack of jackals, and tear it to death.

I'm not an Obama supporter, but this tendency for everyone to pile on ONE THING and ignore everything else going on around them is just....idiotic. It serves the nation poorly (and the GOP well, at least right now).

14. I'm afraid that if the
'Southern Strategy' works this time, this country will revert back to the dark ages.

Every future politician will use it with a vengeance, furthering damaging racial relations in this country.
