This might be old news -- McCain's statement on Obama/Wright:
"I can only say that I am sure, knowing Senator Obama, that he does not share the extreme views that were expressed that I saw on television."

I thought that is pretty positive and classy. Didn't take the opportunity to inject any doubt as to Obama's patriotism.

5. He didn't end the sentence with
"as far as I know..."

It's this kind of strong statement Hillary should have offered when asked about Obama's ties to Islam.

4. Sometimes his advanced age is a good thing...
he still knows how to be a gentleman... now if we could just get him to stop being so crazy?

7. I saw that he say this to Hannity, if I'm not mistaken.
John McCain is a lunatic, and I would certainly vote for Hillary Clinton instead of him if that's the way the cookie crumbles. But he's conducting himself very honorably and in a very above-board fashion, and he deserves credit for that.

It's not lost on me that it may be pure political calculation on his part -- he may be aware that the ugliness in the Democratic race is turning a lot of people off, and if he behaves like a calm, reasonable adult, he could gain the votes of some the disaffected.

Either way though, he didn't have to say it, and he deserves credit for saying it when he had every reason to take the opposite route.

8. Well if it is pure political calculation
and couched his response because of the awareness of the Dem campaign turning people off, he's learned the lesson better than we have. :eyes:

9. That's not lost on me, believe me.
John McCain is not stupid. His campaign was dead and buried last year. He was a punchline. Now, somehow, he's the nominee.

I think we can beat him, but we shouldn't underestimate him.

11. I know!
Remember when he was THIS CLOSE to being gone from the race?

I heard a psychic on the radio say the Rep nom would be McCain with Giuliani as his VP. I just about spewed because McCain wasn't a contender by any stretch of the imagination -- for all intents and purposes he'd already lost.

Now, if he does choose Giuliani as his VP (which I think is not even a possibility) I'll be awaiting a Clinton presidency in 2009. The same psychic said Hillary would be POTUS, Edwards VPOTUS.

This entire campaign has been WILD!

10. McCain knows he can remain above the fray. 527s on the Right
will make hay with this issue if Obama is candidate. Just
be prepared.

12. a 527 attack can be easily countered with clips of McCain
saying this, along with Huckabee's defense of Obama as well.
