Gore hopes Dem race will resolve itself
Source: CNN

(CNN) – He's increasingly mentioned as a potential Democratic powerbroker, but former Vice President Al Gore said Thursday he still expects his party's heated White House race will resolve itself.

"What have we got, five months left?" Gore told the Associated Press after delivering a speech at Middle Tennessee State University. "I think it's going to resolve itself, but we'll see," he added.

The former vice president did not say whether he expected the race will be resolved before the party's convention in late August. His comments come as Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean said in several interviews that he hopes the party's approximately 350 undecided superedelegates make their decision by July 1 — less than a month after the final primary contests in Montana and South Dakota.

As the Democratic race drags on, Gore's name has been invoked a neutral Democratic party elder who could forge a compromise between the two candidates, or even appear on the top of the presidential ticket himself.

Earlier this week, Democratic Rep. Tim Mahoney of Florida suggested Gore, the party’s 2000 presidential nominee, could assume the role of a compromise candidate if neither Hillary Clinton nor Barack Obama could broker a deal. If it goes into the convention, don’t be surprised if someone different is at the top of the ticket,” he told a Florida newspaper, adding Gore could be that choice.

He paints the scenario I proposed here a few weeks ago. Just get the SD's to abstain on the first round and then its wide open.

17. Right.
That scenario could happen, it's by the rules, and I believe it would lead to the best possible outcome.

3. Wouldn't it be great if the path were to open to Al Gore at convention? I would
definitely stand behind that decision and it would be the right one. :)

4. I so dream of such a thing as Gore taking over. He would have beat the press
at their games and he would continue to work his smarts to beat the press attacks this time around. He would win in such a landslide that NO ONE could steal it from him again.

19. Hope dies last.
Gore would be a perfect president. I don't think there is any chance of it happening.

22. They would come to accept it
when Obama explained to him that he made the agreement because it's best for the nation. They would respect his choice. A few wouldn't, of course, but most would in a short time.

16. "don’t be surprised if someone different is at the top of the ticket,”
It's a possibility.

Historically, that's what's happened in similar situations.

How much a boy of the Clintons and the DLC do you remain, Gore?

26. Not sure why you assume he's not involved
Gore has been working in the background with both candidates to get this resolved. He speaks with Obama every week as per the candidate. I presume he's been in touch with Senator Clinton as well though she hasn't stated as such publicly. There have been many unsubstantiated news reports to the effect that he, Dean, Reid and Pelosi have been trying to persuade the candidates to resolve their issues before taking it to the convention.

I would highly recommend Gore's book Assault on Reason. He is not DLC and definitely not in the Clinton's pocket as you assume.

25. the only way to unite the party after HRC & BO have destroyed it is for Gore to come to the rescue
Edited on Fri Mar-28-08 06:35 PM by bpeale
no HRC on the ticket, no BO on the ticket. those two need to be sent to bed without supper instead of rewarded with a place on the ticket. there are too many who will NOT support the other candidate if theirs loses. i am already one of those. FYI, i don't support either remaining candidate & will in fact vote McCain if i have to to keep either one from gaining the presidency. only Gore or edwards will change that.
