Jonathon Alter: Hillary as Governor as New York?

Jonathan Alter is reporting on tonight's 8pm edition of MSNBC's "Countdown" that certain Clinton supporters actually want her to gracefully exit after Pennsylvania and prepare to run for Governor of New York.

She would most likely face Rudy Giuliani or Michael Bloomberg in 2010. This is all because current New York Governor David Paterson is having a difficult time shaking off his own peccadillos--numerous affairs possibly paid for by tax payers when he was a State Senator and Lt Governor. In fact, Clinton could run for Governor as early as November if Paterson vacates and a special election is called.

Interesting...It would be an epic showdown. The Senate Race in 2000 that never was.

6. Lazio was not a serious challenger - but neither was Alan Keyes.

13. Wouldn't her opponent run
ads with hilary building to a crescendo with her Bosnia "Fire by Sniper" tale on the 2008 campaign trail? I know I would.

I think that's worse than anything anyone else has done except bush with his AWOL sending troops to a misbegotten War On Iraq.

20. The issue for me isn't the statement...it's the repeated blatant lie.
People sometimes "misspeak". People sometimes try to pad their resume.

This "sniper fire" thing is in a completely different league. Clinton fabricated a complete lie and then lied about the lie. That's epic.

21. Same here and for a lot of people,
Mercutio. This will never die..it's not something you live down. It's compounded by this fact.. how dumb is she that she thought she could get away with it?

25. I have no idea...maybe the claims that she's kinda psychotically driven are true.
No rational person would tell that story.

No rational "sleep-deprived" person would have told that story on 4 different occasions.

No rational person (sleep-deprived or not) would have tried to explain away the statement as a sleep-deprived "misstatement" when it was documented that she made the same speech 4 times.

It's just a little loony. There's no way her statements are the truth and there's no way her explanations of those statements do anything but damage her.

I've never heard her admit even the possibility of defeat. EVERY time I've heard her asked some version of the question as to what she'll do if she's not the nominee, she has always replies "It'll be me".

Yes, I have a bias. No, I'm not qualified to make psychological diagnoses...

I think she's frighteningly obsessed with winning. I don't think the reality train makes a scheduled stop at her station. She's strong, she's smart, she's a fighter...but, IMO, she's a little nuts.

10. I'd cheer for that, too.
Let her answer the governor's phone at 3 am. Hopefully not Spitzer dialing the wrong number for Lulu's House of Pleasure.

9. I don't know why she'd want that except to save face
In a lot of ways it would be a demotion from her senate seat and by taking it she'd have to quit the senate to run for gov in 2010 then quit that to run again in 2012 and that's only IF mccain is elected pres.

IMO she'd be better off stayin in the senate where she could get a lot of publicity if she would start taking some principled positions, stop listening to her asshole husband, act on her own good instincts, and quit trying to suck up to people who are always gonna hate her guts no matter what.

15. If Hillary thinks Obama is a "loser" and he's winning this race
over her, what, in her mind, does that make her? Just wondering....

17. While I'd rather her President,
I think if Paterson doesn't run, or can't in 2010, it will be hard for a Dem to run and win. This will be because the Dems, in their short four years, will be framed as less competent than 12 year GOP. Yes, I know Pataki was atrocious but he didn't resign, or mar his first few days in office like Paterson. Paterson made a mistake by talking about those things, because if it had just come out while he was governor, it would be nothing. Instead, he has made it the centerpiece of his governoship.

18. Why would she want that?
Being a senator seems to be more prestigious IMO. It's probably a cushier job as well.
