61. It did very much
I think that was totally predictable. It's just the dynamics of a head to head argument as opposed to a group discussion. The party should have encouraged candidates to stay in, rather than helping to drive them out. It would have been a framework for developing fantastic plans. Once JRE was out, it crashed and burned.

When he got out, the other two slid into pared down, safe and packaged responses. They were on autopilot. He made the debate better for everyone.

The Pastor Wright debacle shocked Obama back to life. That speech was wonderful. He rose to the occasion.

I sure miss John Edwards.

16. I totally agree
When John Edwards left the children started a fist fight and now the Democrats will pay the price for it. They have bloodied each other and neither one of them is talking issues. So day in and day out all we get to hear is charges of racism, charges of sexism, who is more evil. I am quite disgusted and I'm not alone.

The only one who gave a damn about the poor, the helpless and the hopeless and truly wanted to correct the ills created over the last eight years is gone and we are left poorer for it.

it just hurts to see what is becoming of our "sure thing" "historic" political season of 2008.Someone said a sucker was born every minute, but damn, did all of them have to Democrats who bought into the shiny baubles of "new" and "change" this cycle? 39. The problem is that isn't about being in the race ONLY to win!
Edited on Fri Mar-28-08 10:57 PM by calipendence
It is about being in the race to represent PEOPLE, and their issues. Edwards was kicking butt doing that!

I guess many of the newer generation that keep getting marketed the meme that all that matters is "winning" don't see this issue. I would have been happy to see him stay in the race, even if I KNEW he wasn't going to win, if I KNEW he could help be the powerbroker to put these issues on the candidate who ultimately wins' plate. And just the week before, he seemed to be comfortable playing this role as he was talking about taking his issues to the convention. I think someone pressured him out because they knew he was a threat for this. The same people that pushed him out even though he had little voter support to "win", but a lot of voter support to force some issue stance they didn't want, are the same people that are asking Hillary to stay in and muddy the waters so that these sorts of issues don't get dealt with and either we are completely distracted from them, or McCain wins, and they win!

As others in this thread have noted, unfortunately since Edwards has bowed out, the race has devolved into one personal attack after another, back and forth, and not a lot of substantive talk on issues. I'm really hoping that Obama is holding back some true grass roots agenda that he is holding back from the corporatist drones he knows would use that as a reason to push him aside like they've done Edwards, but I don't like just voting on "hope"...

I would even support Hillary carrying her campaign to the convention IFFFF she was in this race more than just for her own power, which seems obvious at this point. Maybe she's for her corporate contributors' power too, but I don't see any big issue she's a champion of for us people that would justify her hanging in there.

82. Stupid donkeys...
Edwards hasn't "moved on." He's just tacking, that's all. He's still headed in the same direction. Or mission, if you prefer. Do you know how to sail into the wind? You tack and jibe. Do you really think Edwards isn't going to do what he promised? Re poverty, health care, the poor... He has a mission, not a goal to "be president" (like the two tired left-overs, endlessly yammering their virtues and the others' faults -- with no thought for the People).

And John Edwards' true supporters aren't going to "move on" either, so stop your stupid yammering, all of you... :boring:

That populist representatives of all the people like John Edwards and Dennis Kucinich are the only political leaders that seem to get it?

I mean, how can these two even begin to measure up to John Edwards?

How is it that America has been once again manipulated into a dirty corner?

I miss John Edwards. He would have really brought a changing of the guard; a house-cleaning in our corrupted government. People must have been afraid to actually want to take America back from the clutches of the corporate oligarchy.

It is a sad state of affairs we find ourselves in.

Too bad we have to settle for second best (Clinton) and distant third (Obama).

55. There's been speculation about handing it to Gore in the second round at the convention...
I was pretty much in the Edwards camp before he dropped out (I liked DK more, and Gravel too, but had a hard time seeing that they'd be feasible in the GE). If there's a stall among the delegates and Obama OR Hillary will both split the party, with neither's supporters voting for the other, wouldn't throwing the support to Edwards be at least a little less controversial than throwing it to Gore, who was never in the race to begin with, and whom we're not even sure wants or will accept it at all? I'm hoping it can be resolved first and foremost among the two we still have running, but Edwards could win against McCain, no question.

I can't get excited about either of the two remaining candidates.

The personal attacks and mudslinging from both sides are really disturbing as is the fact that both of them seem to be perfectly happy with the status quo in terms of corporations being the most important "citizens" of our country.

It was nice to have some people (Edwards, Kucinich) who were willing to talk about those among us who are not wealthy and privileged.

68. I would have loved it if JE was still in it.
Sadly, he is not and if he were, the viciousness wouldn't be much different. nasty hair jokes, scummy lawyer comments, not a poor man, big house, hiding behind sick wife, yadayadayada.

the reality is those that support their candidates support them, those that hate them, hate them.

69. Edwards was my number two choice after Kucinich.
I would have voted for him if he didn't drop out before Super Tuesday. Respect++ for Edwards.

That said, I'm perfectly fine with supporting Obama now - he's got me sold on his campaign. He's definitely playing the adult in the election season right now.

73. Gladly.
If it's still close when my primary (finally) rolls around in late May, I'll cast a vote for her, if it will help neither get a majority of delegates. That gives us the only chance to come out with a decent candidate.

I'd be glad to see him nominated.

80. I like Edwards but... he, like Clinton are part of the problem...
He apologized for his war vote but he also continued this dumb "blame poor people" policy march with his vote on the bankruptcy bill. It undermined his message of lifting this country out of poverty. In many respects he suffers the fate of Clinton... he has an inability to learn from his mistakes. If he endorsed Clinton he will put the feather in his cap of "lets be dumb one more time".

You can't say you want to fight for Americans and endorse a known war monger and someone who will have lobbyists running your white house. You sound hypocritical preaching against this action then endorsing the candidate who votes in lockstep with Bush.

83. They're not pipedreams, Maine
Edited on Mon Mar-31-08 12:36 AM by Hermes Daughter
and he's not out. He's still here and he'll make more of a difference in the long run than either of the corporate shills.

And if we can raise enough to buy millions of i-pods, we can buy the Obama votes, give the nomination to Edwards, close out McCain, and save the country. Gore saves the planet... and we all live happily ever after.

This is the FINAL WORD. Good night and sweet dreams, you princes of Maine.O8)
