Feingold tells Obama fans to 'cool it'

The fight for the Democratic nomination for president has gotten personal in recent days, but U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold is urging calm.
"I'll tell some of the (Barack) Obama supporters here today: Cool it," Feingold, D-Middleton, said Wednesday to a group of about 50 people at the University of Wisconsin Marathon County. "Take it a little easy."

The campaigns of Sens. Obama of Illinois and Hillary Clinton of New York have exchanged blows in recent weeks, and aides to each campaign have resigned after making controversial statements. At UWMC, Feingold aimed his censure at Obama supporters, saying their purpose should not be to "crush" Clinton, but at other times, he seemed to take aim at both campaigns' rhetoric.

"People are frustrated by the length of this political season," Feingold said. "When that starts to get personal, it is to the benefit of the Republican candidate. I believe there's plenty of time for this to be over. But it needs to stop pretty soon."

Feingold has said he voted for Obama in Wisconsin's primary and that he is "highly inclined" to support him as a superdelegate at the Democratic convention. Following the constituent listening session, he told the Daily Herald that he thinks Democratic party leaders should try to influence the tone of the campaign, but that it is not yet time to step in to force an outcome.

"The more leaders say, 'Look, this (tone) isn't welcome,' ... I think people hear me say that, and I hope they'd say, well, you know, maybe he's right," he said.

Feingold said he still does not think superdelegates will decide the nominee, implying that the contest will be wrapped up before the Democratic convention in late August.

Discussion at Wednesday's listening session ranged from constituent concerns about veterans benefits, central Wisconsin plant closings and the possibility of war with Iran.

Feingold holds listening sessions in all 72 counties in Wisconsin each year.

13. Actually, yes.
I really don't know what you are talking about when you say a boycott.

Look, I don't live on this site and I am very busy with my profession and life in general. I've worked about 80 hours this past week and I'm not kidding when I asked: "what boycott?"

So, that said, what boycott?

Snopes discusses the article I posted earlier which was the root of your Malkin comment.

The article relates to Obama lying about how his parents met - you know - at Selma. When he was already 4 years old.

10. No I got it from the Wasau Daily Herald
Any reason to believe that Sen Feingold DIDN'T say those things?

If there are, please share.

4. That article is 2 days old. It's nice that you posted the entire thing, though.
Since neither candidate will have enough delegates from primaries/caucuses, I wonder how it is that superdelegates will not decide the nominee unless somebody withdraws. I wonder who that somebody might be?

11. Feingold is a stand up guy!
I think we're hearing people from both sides saying "cool it" both to their own and the other side.

If we only play nice this long primary will be great for the party. Keep things positive and we'll be in the White House in January with a large majority in congress.

Sling mud and aggrivate the other side, and we might have a very different outcome.

Thanks Russ!

David

I've reached out to Hillary supporters and got my hand cut-off. It's a two-way street.

22. Because Hillary has been running such a clean campaign.
:sarcasm: If anyone hasn't been paying attention Hillary is the one with the "negative-only" campaign. I don't even know what she stands for anymore.

23. Sorry Russ, there is a huge difference between defending oneself, than that of being destructive...
HRC and her campaign has been the nasty one and I find it laughable for people to demand that Obama and his "fans" clean up their acts. What a bunch of shit. When the HRC campaign quits crap like tepidly responding to questions that Obama is a Muslim or keeps the Wright flames going, then things might change.
