"I'm voting for McCain because I don't want the Dems getting blamed for not cleaning up this mess"
That is what a friend of mine told me. I suppose that he is thinking about the long term to when the Republicans will be even weaker.

Has anyone else heard this reasoning?

1. People said that about Bush-Kerry too
Could we please stop helping spread nonsense that would give even one person an excuse to vote for McCain.

2. I heard it in 2004 and was stunned.
(they would vote for Bush "because he needs to clean up his own mess" - WTF?!?)

How removed from reality does someone have to be to think such a statement makes sense?

3. Weird logic: He should sign up for combat in Iran before a draft is instituted,
that way he won't be seen as unpatriotic for waiting until he was called upon.

WEEEEE! Let's make up weird shit! :D

6. I remember that the late great
Molly Ivens said something similar after the Democrats had lost in 2004. (the "dead chicken cure")

Her column however, had a tone of looking for silver linings after a loss rather than rationalizing supporting one.

I also remember reading about a conversation of Kerry campaign staffers prior to the vote. One asked another "What the hell are we going to do about Iraq?" The question was predicated on the assumption that Kerry would win.

Things will be tough if the Democrats win, make no mistake about it. while if the Republicans win it will not be hard to find things that can justifiably be blamed on them.

The rot problem however, is that the country and the world can only stand so much neocon ignorant and belligerent bullying. And more of it will make the crises worse, not better.

The rationale is appealing on a superficial level, but it is saying that we want things to get worse because we can't take the heat of trying to make things better.

It is cowardly.

8. Wasn't that the Nader strategy in 2000?
Let things get so bad that the voters would flock to his thinking, and that the politicians would have no choice but to massively shift to the left. So how well did that work for us? People should know by now that this way of thinking can never work.

10. Ask your "friend" how he proposes the Supreme Court mess that McCain will make
be "cleaned up"?

We will be weaker as a nation, just due to that, if McCain wins the presidency.

15. He thinks McCain has a broom?
Or we just never get around to cleaning it up? Any reason will do in a pinch, I guess.

16. If you don't think Democrats can do a better job cleaning up the mess than the ones who made it....
then I just plain don't understand why you would call yourself a Democrat. Being a Democrat is not a status of perpetual opposition party. We believe we can lead the country better than the Republicans. First, we have to WIN!

The 'pukes will do such a bad job that the Democrats will have free sailing for many years to come.

Or maybe because it is impossible to fix so let them take the blame.

20. Jeez how bad does it have to get
before we vote in some people who might clean it up?

The Democrats will have their work cut out for them but why make it worse so it will just be harded to fix in 2012?
