Breaking: Tennessee Governor Joins Other Governors At Big Sky Resort, Promotes Superdelegate Primary
Tennessee governor joins other governors at Big Sky resort, promotes idea for June superdelegate primary

By MATT GOURAS of the Associated Press

HELENA - Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen says his proposal for a superdelegate primary received a warm reception from fellow Democratic governors meeting this weekend in Montana.

Bredesen has proposed a two-day superdelegate primary for June after the last voter primary, in hopes that the party can pick its nominee early and avoid a bitter summer fight between U.S. Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton.

“I think there were some very broad feelings (among the governros) that we need to find a way to bring this to closure,” Bredesen said in a telephone interview Sunday.

About a dozen Democratic governors gathered at Big Sky ski resort Friday, Saturday and Sunday for a policy conference sponsored by the Democratic Governors Association on energy and health care.

Bredesen, who is also policy chairman of the DGA, said he did not advance a specific resolution or seek commitments from the governors. But Bredesen said he hopes to gather support among all superdelegates, including the governors, in order to convince the Democratic National Committee to champion the cause.

“I personally think the DNC has to pick up the ball here,” Bredesen said. “I think absent the DNC calling for it to happen and organizing it, it might be very flat.”

The DNC has previously said that it does not support the idea. A spokeswoman did not return a call seeking comment Sunday.

Some superdelegates, including Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer, have yet to back either candidate and are hoping the nomination will be settled by June n without the need for a superdelegate primary.

“That may not even be necessary. Let’s see how things shake out,” said Schweitzer, who is waiting to endorse a candidate until after Montana voters have their say in the state’s June 3 primary.

Bredesen agreed it is possible the contest could come to an end with one of the candidates dropping out. But if that doesn’t happen, he said the party needs to have a plan so that superdelegates make their picks well in advance of the August nominating convention.

1. John Edwards dropped out of the race because the math stated he couldn't win
And he was my original pic for the nomination. Now the math states that Hillary can't win yet she keeps dragging it on. I think this is an intervention of sorts so she can be convinced to drop out of the race for the sake of the democratic party.

3. Not gonna happen..and not needed

Surely people know who the 300 or so who have not committed, are.. a simple phone call to them and a "strong" suggestion to them to shit or get off the pot is all that's needed..

Frankly, I think that as soon as the field gets winnowed down to 1, ALL the supers should be required to align with a candidate, so each candidate knows how many they have in their column.. at some point down the line it's obvious who's the winner..

as long as 300 wallflowers are still being coy and waiting to be asked to dance, the 2nd place person thinks they have a chance..

5. Don't matter, not going to happen
Why do you think Clinton44 stated on live TV we are taking it to the convention. Don't you think she and her legal team know the rules of the delegate book. She can take it to the convention and will. She has a right to do that just as Ted Kennedy did. No matter how hard Donna Brazille pounds the pavement about it and of course she was the one to decide to strip the states of all delegates. She will not be forced out of taking her campaign and seated delegates to the convention.

8. Lets throw the rules out the window. There is a credentials committee
for a reason and these jerks should follow the rules. There will be hell to pay if they try to short circuit this primary.
