FROM BAD TO VERSE FOR HILL
AIRPORT'S GIRL POET STUNNED BY SNIPER TALE AS INSULTED FELLOW BOSNIANS RIP 'LOW BLOW' LIE

By SELIM ALGAR, Post Correspondent

March 31, 2008 -- SARAJEVO, Bosnia - The Bosnian girl who famously read a poem to Hillary Rodham Clinton during her 1996 visit to the war-torn country is shocked - and her countrymen infuriated - that the former first lady claimed to have dodged sniper fire that day.

Emina Bicakcic, now 20 and studying to become a doctor, told The Post she stood on the tarmac at the air base in Tuzla, greeted Clinton and even had time to share the lines of verse she'd written - all without fear of attack from an unseen enemy.

"I was surprised when I heard this," Bicakcic said, referring to Clinton's assertion that she braved snipers upon landing, ducking and sprinting to military vehicles.

Other Bosnians said they had one of two reactions to Clinton's debunked action-hero account of her visit: laughter or anger.

"It's an exaggeration," said former acting President Ejup Ganic, who was present during Clinton's visit. "No one was firing. There were no shots fired."

Sema Markovic, 22, a student, said she has long respected Hillary as a strong leader but was angered by her remarks.

"It is an ugly thing for a politician to tell lies,' she said. "We had problems for years, and I don't like when someone lies about them. It makes us look bad."

Clinton has since admitted she "misspoke."

Bicakcic, asked if she feared any threat of violence that day, said she felt just the opposite.

"No," she said, speaking at her home in Sarajevo, the Bosnian capital. "I was just excited. I wanted to look {Clinton} in the eye and say, 'Thank you.' "

And Clinton, she said, seemed far more interested in her poem than in dashing for shelter.

***

Many Bosnians - still confronted with bullet-scarred and burned-out buildings from Sarajevo to Tuzla - said their very real experiences with violence should not serve as cheap fodder for Clinton's political ambitions.

"It was a horrible lie," said 29-year-old Midhat Efendira.

Like most Bosnians, he expressed a deep appreciation of Bill Clinton for his role in ending the war. But he found Hillary Clinton's remarks intolerable.

"It was a low blow," he said. "She did it to gain sensational publicity."

Efendira said that Bosnians are closely following the US presidential race and that Hillary's remarks have damaged the formerly untouchable Clinton name in the country.

Sead Numanovic, the deputy editor-in-chief of Bosnia's largest newspaper, Dnevni Avaz, laughed at Sen. Clinton's account of the alleged sniper fire and her claim that she "misspoke."

"My first thought was, she must be kidding," he said. "When someone threatens your life, you don't make a mistake."

Numanovic said his paper has not even bothered to cover the story.

"We don't have space for someone's lies," he said. "Why is she so stupid? It doesn't portray her as a real leader."

In this Monday March 25, 1996 file picture, first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton kisses Emina Bicakcic, 8, from Sarajevo who dedicated a poem to her shortly after her arrival at the Tuzla Air Base. Mrs. Clinton's daughter Chelsea, left, accompanies her on their one-day visit to the U.S. troops stationed in Bosnia. Clinton says she made a mistake in claiming that she came under hostile fire when landing in Bosnia as first lady 12 years ago.

4. "Under sniper fire" = actual shots were fired
Hillary said that they landed "under sniper fire." That means she was saying that she was being fired upon.

I mean, come on already.

17. It was just completely unnecessary.
I mean, it's not like it's "honorable," but if you're lying to escape responsibility for something bad that you've done, I can at least understand that somewhat. But this was just dumb, for more reasons than I can count.

It is a "horrible lie"!

75. This is what she said....
That claim was repeated during a speech last Monday on Iraq, in which Clinton said of the trip: “I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base.”

I realize that I lack the deductive ability of the average HRC devotee, but I would appreciate your wisdom here.

How does a sniper fire without firing?

22. "We don't have space for someone's lies"
If that editorial policy were adopted in our own humble media, there would be less of an incentive for people, such as Senator Clinton, to keeping telling and repeating their lies.

The truth takes up no space, can't attract advertisers, doesn't fulfill the need for more and more and more, like lies.

"Now let me tell you what I can remember, OK -- because what I was told was that we had to land a certain way and move quickly because of the threat of sniper fire. So I misspoke -- I didn't say that in my book or other times but if I said something that made it seem as though there was actual fire -- that's not what I was told. I was told we had to land a certain way, we had to have our bulletproof stuff on because of the threat of sniper fire. I was also told that the greeting ceremony had been moved away from the tarmac but that there was this 8-year-old girl and, I can't, I can't rush by her, I've got to at least greet her -- so I made a -- I took her stuff and then I left, Now that's my memory of it.

50. Speaking of Bosnia
Hillary has cozied up to Chris Spirou, a former paid advisor to Slobodan Milosevic. Spirou, an American citizen and the former chair of the NH Democratic State Committee, was employed as a consultant by the Serb regime during the Dayton talks. Spirou was supposed to curry favor with prominent Democrats and build support for the Serb position.

Spirou, the former paid stooge for a genocidal madman, helped organize New Hampshire's large Greek community for Clinton during the NH Primary.

53. I've tried
It was nitpicked to death by Clinton aplogists because Spirou later backtracked and said he was helping "all sides" in the negotiations. That's clearly not the case, given Greece's longstanding relationship with a fellow Orthodox country.

There's an article in the NY Times archives that mentions Spirou's role in helping Milosevic. I'll see if I can find it.

66. Could be
I've been contemplating that move for at least the last 6 years and have enough points to qualify for legal immigration. Still researching the move.

67. This whole thing was completely unecessary
I don't understand what she was trying to get at and how she didn't think it couldn't be verified.

At first, I was willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. I thought she mixed it up with another event or trip to the region...

But I figured a major incident like that would have made major headlines years ago. There would have been a record of a first lady and first daughter being under sniper fire!

70. With all due respect
And as an Obama supporter, I would wait until a paper other than the post carries this story before touting it too much...

71. I actually raised a lot of money for Kerry auctioning those off on DU!
I bought about 30 of them and sent them out to the top donations pledges. It was really fun. Anyway, if Hillary thinks Murdoch is a fine fundraiser, then she ought to find him a good newspaperman too.

74. I think she was under gun fire, in a symbolic metaphysical sense.
