The "mistake" being his daughters having sex before marriage, which is not a surprising stance given his religion. The "punishment" being that they would either get pregnant or catch an STD if they didn't protect themselves, therefore he is an advocate of sex education including education about contraceptives and he is against abstinence only education. (Which is what he meant by "information").
