Though not officially sanctioned, it was no different, in its way, than the "ignore" or "hide thread" feature, and I'm sure stopped more than one flame-war before it ever got started.

I was not a very good practitioner of the "Let It Sink" campaign, but there was nothing "stupid" about an attempt to keep folks from flaming each other to cinders.
