Typical White People
Typical White People

Cross posted from www.SavagePolitics.com

I ordered my 'typical white person' t-shirt today. Something I never saw myself doing when I first set out on that road I walked for decades in behalf of civil rights. And my Dad, if he were still living, would find it ironical. The hours I spent confronting him over his use of the `n' word made for some lively discussions around our kitchen table. This Formica oblong on chrome legs sat in a street-facing window in our apartment on Norton Avenue in Lynwood, California, the white person's Compton. It was there I learned that Vincent Lawrence, an Irish river rat on Manhattan's lower east side, had been taught to say nigger along with his oatmeal. But the truly amazing thing about my Dad's use of this word, was the way he unlearned it the day the hearse carrying the body of John F. Kennedy rolled across the nation's tv screens. Not long after this my father stood up for civil rights at great personal sacrifice. And although I had already left home, my Dad became my personal hero.

I think in order to appreciate the sacrifice involved in my Father's stand for racial equality, you need to understand that my Father

1. You don't think there's a "typical white person"? Marketing firms know there is and make millions
Edited on Mon Mar-31-08 09:35 PM by cryingshame
by exploiting that fact.

And since Hillary's campaign is run by people who specialize in polling people to find out what each subset thinks, she knows better than that too.

5. Divisive. Fake outrage. Good for this person. Its great that there is so little at stake in
this election, allowing us to fixate on a line from a beautiful speech taken out of context and blown up out of proportion.

I guess I'll print up a shirt that says, "Hey, Hillary! Why didn't you take the time to read the NIE before voting for the Iraq War? My cousin Tommy died in Iraq at 19 and it took you until 2008 to finally express regret for your vote." Maybe its not so concise, but, like I said, with so little riding on this election, let's play games!!

15. Obviously it's a backlash
The viciously anti-Clinton threads are causing a backlash. Get used to it. Some Obama supporters, with their hateful posts are destroying his chances at winning the GE. I support him, but think he might lose the GE thanks to the mean-spirited attacks on Clinton by some of his supporters. DU has become a disgrace.

37. The point of the Bosnia posts ...
... was the fact that when any presidential candidate outrightly lies - and then, when caught in the lie, dismisses it as mis-speaking instead of taking responsibility for their actions - is newsworthy.

And, unfortunately for Hillary, that fact is not going to go away because of OPs like this.

47. Lying to the voters is not newsworthy for 6 days?
Sorry for saying so, but it's going to be newsworthy for the rest of Hill's campaign. It goes straight to the heart of her credibility - and, as you have no doubt seen, it has raised questions about the veracity of her other claims to "experience", the very foundation of her campaign.

I don't know what makes her less qualified to be president: the fact that she was stupid enough to think she could get away with this whopper, or the fact that she thought the voters would be too stupid to know she was lying.

49. But none of Obama's lies get even a day of coverage! And he has many!
Edited on Tue Apr-01-08 12:21 PM by saracat
Beginning with a nonexistent Magazine article that "inspired " his political career as well as his fictional parental inspiration by "Selma" without which he couldn't have been born to lying to ABC about his Rezko donations.Please. Everything he says is whitewashed. He even "promised" he would NOT run for president in 2008. He also "lied" about the depth of his relationship with Rezko and was forced to admit it was more "extensive" then he admitted. There is much much more as well. This double standard sickens me.

9. I'm a typical white person
and you know what. I've worked my ass of for the past 4 weeks for Senator Obama because I know he's not a racist. My father had to be restrained by his african american brothers in arms when they were in the south and they wouldn't serve his friends outside a military base. 3 african american soldiers had to take my dad out from tearing up the place. My grandfather fought for african american state troopers when he was on the force and they showed up at his funeral to pay his respect.

Have you been inside and Obama campaign office? Have you talked to any of his volunteers? Have you met the people that work for him?

Or did you hear a soundbite and make up your mind?

11. emilyg, what I think is funny is that, based on your posts,
you seem like the type of person who when AAs bring up a list of racial grievances ranging from slavery to jim crowe to current forms of institutional discrimination and day to day indignities, well you seem like the type of person to brush that off and tell them to "get over it" or give a "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" response.

Yet you are so outraged by a perceived racial slight directed at you. Do you see any inconsistency there?

Or so I thought, accordingly to DU rules. Or is the Obama Underground and the DU rules been set aside now?

The OP gets to say her sincere piece, whether you agree with her or not. She is fully entitled to take issue with what was for MANY white Americans, "beautiful" speech or not, a viscerally felt racist swipe.

Hillary Clinton 'truly regrets' Gandhi joke
Remarks called stereotypical, racially insensitive

ST. LOUIS, Missouri (AP) -- Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton apologized for joking that Mahatma Gandhi used to run a gas station in St. Louis, saying it was "a lame attempt at humor."

The New York Democrat made the remark at a fund-raiser Saturday. During an event here for Senate candidate Nancy Farmer, Clinton introduced a quote from Gandhi by saying, "He ran a gas station down in St. Louis."
