With the race dragging on, do you now believe that Obama should forgo public financing? |
|
The common belief was that Obama could do public financing because he would be able to raise and spend a lot of money before the Dem convention and then use public financing from the convention until election day.
But with the the race dragging on and Hillary possibly not getting out until July or the convention, the time frame for Obama's supporters to give him money would be nearly gone before public financing plan would start.
I believe if this primary drags late into the summer, Obama should forgo public financing and rely on him supporters. He will need a lot of money for organization, to unbloody himself, fight back RW attacks, and then to start attacking McCain.

2. I'm really torn about it |

I want him to take public financing because I believe in public financing and I know that Obama does too. But if he agrees to take it Clinton will use it against him when lobbying the superdelegates, arguing that it hamstrings him.
I believe that the limits do not go into effect until after the convention, so he might be better off taking the public financing, especially since he may exhaust his fundraising to some degree before the general. If Clinton supporters are bitter after the primary they won't want to donate, and his supporters might not have that much more to give.

If public financing is $85 million, and the GE stars in September, would it really be that bad for him to do it?
Is he expecting to raise more than that in 2+ months.
If it's true that public financing starts the day after the convention, I don't see a big deal.

If the convention was being held a month earlier, forgoing public financing would have been a no brainer.
It depends if Obama feels confident in his fundraising abilities, if he thinks within the span of two months he can raise more than $85 million.
