Poll question: Is GD:P too hard on new DU members?
Otherwise known as "Newbies," "Noobs," and "The Under 1,000 Crowd"...

1. Depends on if they're trolls or not. nt

4. Exactly my point.
Some longtime members (or at least, people with high post counts) here were trolls and eventually got the granite pizza--but only after they were allowed to disrupt for weeks (months?) longer than they should have been. Remember the Murkin?

But back when I was new here, if I said anything slightly controversial, DU'ers would be going "Hmm, low post count. He's toast."

20. Exactly Some trolls are immediately obvious as such
but there also is a very unnecessary tendency for some to attack posters who appear legitimate, but who are asking tough questions of a long term poster or saying something accurate that is not favorable to one candidate or the other. This happens no matter who the target is and it could lose some people who could become good, but who perhaps spent too little time observing the dynamics before posting.

It would be silly to expect the same reaction to unknown posters as to known, but I've seen some new people jumped on way too fast. (Though some are so obvious that I was likely 1 out of 1000 people to alert.)

2. Usually, at least in the heat of this primary.
But, let's face it, half of them end up getting tombstoned, so maybe we're onto something. I especially like the ones who can't wait until they have ten posts so they can begin trashing one of the candidates. Or the ones who make comments about other DUers as if they know them, even though they signed up that day. Things that make us go hmmmmm.

9. How have you avoided getting tombstoned Forkboy?
You should write a book.

3. Absolutely
They get totally dismissed based on nothing.

Or, if they have a legitimate opinion, they are accused of being resurrected from the granite pile.

Yes we're rough but nobody should waltz in here without a little testing to see who or what they really are.

8. Yes...
I mean present.
:itsafreakingjoke:

Yes, I do believe that noobs are sometimes unfairly attacked on here. At one time, there was a fair amount of civility and courtesy and a nice warm welcome extended. Since this certain forum on DU has been taken over by God knows who some of these people are, noobs are suspect and not exactly extended the courtesy any more. My rule of thumb is this: If they are noobs and they seem reasonable, extend them a welcome. If they come here spouting right wing bullshit, I call the right wing bullshit and welcome them anyway. I was a noob once too. We all were.

I've been here nearly two years and have still yet to reach 1000 posts. I had no idea I was still considered a n00b.

28. Me too!
I've been here since 2005. I don't post a lot because most of my comments would be redundant. Someone always says what I want to say before me. No need to repeat a post.

27. I lurked in 2001 and joined in 2002.
I haven't even cleared 9000 posts. :hi: You're no newbie, my friend, just an infrequent poster, like myself. This place just goes "on guard" when we have an influx of new folks, posting newsmax & drudge links.

is too hard on seasoned members. I have been here almost since inception and I am amazed, and saddened, by the nasty stuff I see thrown around here.

14. Yes. I've seen several new posters get piled on for asking a question
or making a statement that disagreed with the majority of posters on a thread. I'm aware that we've had a lot of trolls and disrupters around here lately, but not every newbie falls in that category. If we have doubts we should alert on a post and let the mods sort it out. As we've been told before, the mods and admins have more info on the individual posters than we do and I think they are doing a pretty good job.

but I'll say this much. Long time DUers often come off as a bunch of smug a**holes.

I really don't get the point of acting that way? But, hey... if it floats your boat I can let it sink.

18. I dare anybody to get hard on me because I'm a noob...
If some people believe in 'elites' that should somehow get more 'respect' or be more worthy because of their post count, I'd suggest they check up on what the D in DU is supposed to mean.

Having said that I haven't felt anybody attempt to try to be hard on me for being a 'noob'. Would be interesting if one did... :p

Depends on what they post.

Thoughtful posts are treated as such.

OPs posted simply to spread repeatedly regurgitated talking points with hardly even a modicum of 'window dressing' to even TRY to make like it's authentic? That's a horse of a different color.

29. If they're not trolls/idiots/instigators, no, not at all.
Until recently, I was a member of the "Under 1000" crowd.

I don't want to sound full of myself, but I never had anyone be hard on me, and I attribute that to knowing how to not make an ass out of myself.
