Emanuel Cleaver is one of the most honorable men in Congress
He is a great rep and works hard for his district. He is much loved in Kansas City. He is also one of the best public speakers I have ever heard and a true progressive. He makes me proud to be a Democrat.

I understand why he is supporting Hillary. The Clintons were very good to him and to this city when Cleaver was mayor in the 1990s. As an honorable man, he wouldn't dream of not supporting Hillary.

I have known Rev Cleaver for nearly 30 years and can't speak highly enough of him. I greatly admire him for speaking up about the presidential race. I don't agree with everything he said but I respect his voice.

17. When I first started teaching, I worked in a small Catholic school not far from Cleaver's church
He was a city council rep at the time. Most of the kids in our school were not Catholic and we tried to have programs and services that reflected the religious preferences of our kids. More than once, we called Rev Cleaver and he came over to help us. In fact, I can't ever remember him saying no to our school. I will always be grateful to him for that. Those kids knew he cared about them and about our school.

7. The sad thing about that comment
is he isn't the least bit racist. I understand what he meant but I do understand how it sounds bad. Or maybe that's my white guilt. LOL

10. Just like Ferraro, he isnt racist, but made a racial comment
Edited on Tue Apr-01-08 07:48 PM by hnmnf
He may be a good guy, but what he said is offensive to me. You know, most of Obama's support is under the age of 50. Some were only kids during the sixties, and people like me werent born until 1987. So I have no white guilt because in my life in terms of treatment of black people I know I dont have anything to feel sorry for.

13. I was no more offended by Cleaver's comments than I was by Rev Wright's
Both spoke the truth, IMO.

4. He's a despicable man and should be ashamed
Sorry, I don't care what sort of debt he has to Clinton. That gives him no right to drag down Obama in some sort of racially inflamed rant.

I didn't take it that way at all. He also has defended Rev Wright. He spoke up about that controversy over a week ago.

5. Then why did he sound like a complete idiot
on MSNBC a few minutes ago...If his take on Obama was spoken by a white guy, the white guy would be kicked to the curb.....Of course Hil and the rest of the racists on her staff are "secretly" telling the stupordelegates that Obama cannot be elected because of Wright.....and the Beav (Cleaver) is just an extension of that.

I would LOVE to see the 527's over Tuzlagate.

If Obama isn't electable, why is he winning?????

I disagree. He didn't sound like an idiot. He was being honest. He also didn't say Obama wasn't electable. I don't know where you pulled that notion from.

Clinton backer: Obama will win
Posted: 03:02 PM ET
Cleaver, a supporter of Clinton, said he'd be stunned if Obama didn't win.

(CNN) — A key Hillary Clinton supporter appeared to be a bit off message during a recent interview with a Canadian radio station.

"If I had to make a prediction right now, I'd say Barack Obama is going to be the next president," Missouri Rep. Emanuel Cleaver said in a Canadian public radio interview this weekend. "I will be stunned if he's not the next president of the United States."

Cleaver, an African-American, endorsed Clinton's White House bid last year and formally remained aligned with the New York senator even as other black leaders shifted their support to Barack Obama.

But after his district voted for Obama in the February 5 primary, Cleaver did indicate he would consider voting for the Illinois senator at the party's convention if the delegate count was extremely tight between the two candidates.

21. here . . .
"If I had to make a prediction right now, I'd say Barack Obama is going to be the next president...," he said. "I will be stunned if he is not the next president of the United States. Now, when he is sworn in, 99.9 percent of Americans won't know who he is or what he stands for. But it doesn't matter at this point."

That's because, Cleaver says, many white Americans are supporting Obama because "they are looking at Barack Obama and saying this is our chance to demonstrate that we have been able to get this boogeyman called race behind us and so they are going to vote for him."

He says this is causing many African-Americans to "tremble" because they believe white Americans won't want to address issue of race then, saying it's been addressed by Obama's election.
