Richardson: I never promised Clintons
(CNN) – New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson on Wednesday sharply disputed Bill Clinton's reported claim that Richardson promised to endorse Hillary Clinton's bid for the White House.

"I never did," Richardson said. "I never saw five times. I saw him when he watched the Super Bowl with me. We made it very clear to him that he shouldn't expect an endorsement after that meeting."

Bill Clinton's comments reportedly came during a recent meeting with some California superdelegates. The San Francisco Chronicle reported the former president got "red faced" when the subject of Richardson came up and said, "Five times to my face (Richardson) said that he would never do that."

In the interview Wednesday, Richardson acknowledged he was "very close to endorsing" Clinton, but decided not to after the campaign got "nasty."

"I held back. I waited. I felt the campaign got nasty. I heard Senator Obama; he would talk to me continuously," Richardson said.

"The Clintons should get over this," he added.

9. Richardson is a bandwagon jumper. Just like Chris Dodd.
They see themselves as potential Vice-President material, and with this goal in mind it is in their own selfish interest to publicy endorse the candidate they think is most likely to win the nomination.

I don't think anyone is going to base their vote on these so-called high-profile endorsements.

52. Because so-called high-profile endorsements make a difference to the media.
Just look at how much media attention was given to Ted and Caroline Kennedy's endorsement of Barack Obama.

In the end, it did not help Obama win Massachusetts or California. But it kept Obama in the news for 48 hours.

13. How very mature.
"The San Francisco Chronicle reported the former president got "red faced" when the subject of Richardson came up and said,"

I saw Clinton become vicious tearing into a camera crew that kept filming after he thought they'd stopped. Unbeknownst to him, another crew was STILL filming.

The difference in that man on and off camera was jaw-dropping.

I never liked him since I saw that (he was Prez at the time).

Richardson's right -- they just gotta get over this. Entitlement.

16. I'm almost feeling sorry for Mr. Richardson now ....
the guilt is clearly consuming him.

Here's a man who owes everything -- and I mean everything -- to the Clintons, and he turned his back on them because he panicked.

He panicked because he believes Obama will be the nominee, and he desperately wants another job with an administration .. so he had no more use for Hillary and dumped her.

Poor guy. He's going to have a lot of trouble sleeping knowing he gave the proverbial finger to the people who helped build is resume -- when in fact, he should be on his hands and knees thanking them.

He'd be a nobody.

21. seriously, why do you think "he owes everything" to the Clintons?
I find that such a curious way of thinking. Are you suggesting that everyone who Bill Clinton named to his cabinet or to a high post in his administration owes him fealty in perpetuity? Bill Richardson was a 7 term Representative when Clinton tapped him for UN Ambassador. Presumably, Richardson served to Clinton's satisfaction as he subsequently named him as Energy Secretary. And presumably Richardson served capably in that position. When he left that position, he owed Bill Clinton the courtesy, I believe, of not speaking ill of him, something he's never done. It's beyond bizarre to insist, as YOU are that he owes him "everything". You seem to have a sadly feudal outlook on life. But even if it were true that he owed Bill Clinton something, why on earth would you think that he owes Hillary Clinton anything??? Did she hire him? No. And how come you weren't throwing a similar fit over his daring to run against her for the nomination. Please explain why that's just fine and dandy but his endorsing Obama over Hilly is an act of treachery?

Your post is repulsive. Sick, really. "He should be on his hands and knees thanking them"???? Wow. "He'd be a nobody". Er, try again, genius. A Seven term Representative in the House, is not a nobody, and would have been a large enough springboard for him to run for Governor. Others have certainly done that successfully.

33. Cali, Cali. -- Practically every last word out of Richardson's
mouth during the debates was something about diplomacy.

I've been here, I've been there, I've dealt with this person, I've dealt with that person.

What else did he talk about in between all of his rambling?

Nada.

I actually think his resume should be cut in the shape of a "C" for Clinton.

That's how much he owes them.

Now I know you're irate with me for hammering Richardson so fiercely -- but he deserves it for being a disloyal, backstabbing "oh, homosexuality is a choice" ingrate.

Repulsive? Sick?

Yes, perfect adjectives to describe Mr. Richardson who is once again depending on someone else to hook him up with a dream job.

And he should be endorsing Hillary because he owes her husband everything.

44. Yes, he got experience as Clinton's ambassador and a cabinet member
And he owed Clinton loyalty WHILE he was in his employ. NOT beyond. And it is sick and reflective of a feudal mentality to insist that Hilly is owed his endorsement because he was in Bill's cabinet. Either Hills is running on her own or not. According to you it's not; she's running on Bill's coattails in your book. How sad.

You want him to back someone who he doesn't believe in because he "owes" them.

What about doing the right thing or standing on his own principles. What did he find out about the Clinton's and what did we learn about Bill Richardson?

Bill Richardson just said NO to being bullied into doing something that he felt was wrong. You know when top people in the cabinet start to turn there is inside info that we don't have.

And Richardson already has a "cushy" job. And if you're going to pull the stupid shit about SDs going with the will of the voters of the state they hail from, than Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray are clearly disloyal and treacherous- Washington went for Obama. Educate yourself, dear. SDs are free to back whoever they want. I've said that repeatedly to both Obama and Clinton supporters. Richardson has said why he endorsed Obama. I'll believe him over Bill Clinton anyday. Unlike Clinton, he's not a repeated serial liar, who lied to his wife, his friends and the country.

26. "I did not have sexual relations with that woman" Who has the credibility problem
Unless you were listening in on the famous Super Bowl party conversation, as Bill R. reassured Bill C. over the guacamole dip and brewskis you have no way of knowing who's telling the truth here.

It comes down to who you believe. One of the men is a noted diplomatic troubleshooter, a guy who's known for being able to go into tense situations and gain the trust of all sides. The other is a greatly talented but deeply flawed leader who's legacy has been stained by a series of statements that were not only misleading but were often outright provable lies.

he said Richardson promised NOT TO ENDORSE Obama. Those are two different things. I notice the absence of Richardson denying that.

61. Doesn't that sound just
...a tad strange. If Hillary is not going to get the Richardson endorsement wouldn't a normal person not give a shit who else gets it? It's like, If Hillary can't have it from you then don't give it to him either. Isn't this just a little childish? Evidently, and I'm going by what you say, Bill found out Hillary was not going to get the endorsement so he wanted to fcuc it up for Obama?

She might do a little better if she went out and actually earned the delegates instead of using playground childish games to corner them.

Not to mention the gall it takes to ask someone NOT to endorse another candidate is staggering. Asking for an endorsement is fine, no shame in being told no. Thats where the conversation should have ended.

A strong candidate doesn't need someone to minimize and manipulate the damage by underhanded tactics. Let Hillary earn hers and Obama earn his without Bill in sabotage mode.

If this is what actually was said/happened?

63. actually my presumption is
that while Clinton was discussing the endorsement with Richardson at some point he volunteered he wouldn't endorse Obama. But actually, it is perfectly reasonable to try to A get an endorsement and failing that B to get the person not to endorse at all. Obama's campaign tried exactly that with Dallas' Stonewall Dems who stayed with endorsing Hillary.

79. I understand ,but
for the sake of argument lets forget about Obama for a minute.

Let me try it this way. If I went to my friends house and asked to borrow his fishing pole? He had his reasons and said no. Do I go back and say "well you better not loan it to so and so then". What Richardson volunteered or implied should make no difference. I didn't get the pole, why am I obsessed with who does or did? Even if he volunteered, no you can't borrow the pole but I loaned it to so and so last week and he caught alot of fish, still makes no difference. I asked, I was told no, now I need to shut up. I don't have a right to ask that man not to loan it out at all. It's his pole he can loan it to whom he chooses without checking it out with me. What he chooses to volunteer does not make my obsession legit.

Now lets bring back Obama. When you take an otherwise good point and throw out the ol' standard "He did it to" it completly dilutes your point. "Obama did it to" did what? You just said Clinton was above board.

Endorsements aren't fishing poles. And Richardson would be a virtual nobody but for Bill Clinton. Clinton's major problem with him, which I think is wholly legit, is that Richardson could have at least being honest about what he would do. He apparently wasn't.

93. Then tell...
Richardson to endorse "Bill' Clinton? If Bill Clinton made Richardson why does Richardson owe Hillary anything? Remember this whole thread was about Bill turning purple and screaming at other people because Hillary didn't get something that may or may not be owed to someone that isn't her to begin with? Thats another point.

Men with the talent of Bill Richardson make it whether the Clintons are involved or not.

BTW, before I get called a Clinton basher. I voted for Bill Clinton twice and I voted for Al Gore once, and voted a straight Democratic ticket the many years before them. I voted for one Republican in my life and that was a local County Commission seat and have regretted it ever since.

In the Florida panhandle there are very few Democrats, I have been spit on and had doors slammed in my face trying to drum up votes for Bill Clinton/Gore. Believe it or not, if this race was between Bill and Barak it would even now be a tough decision.

With Hillary, not so sure.

What she will allow to be sacraficed for the benefit of herself is a hard pill to swallow for me.

94. he owed them honesty
Apparently he was totally dishonest. And while I probably was a bit extreme in saying he would have been nothing, the fact is Richardson does owe a great deal to Bill Clinton. Endorsing Obama is one thing. Lying to Clinton's face before doing so was quite another. His personalization of the endorsement was yet another. Clinton deserved better, so did we.

58. We may never know what this one said to that one or exactly how many
times, etc.

But we do know that in politics lately, the party that earns the respect of Hispanic voters is going to do better than the party that does not.

Richardson is a vital ally in that landscape and his endorsement matters.

Obama won the endorsement. I agree with Richardson that "The Clintons should get over this."

Hilda can't out gain him in states won.
Hilda won't catch him in the popular vote.
Hilda is in debt.

Hilda seems to be losing her giant lead in PA.
Hilda can't stop the defection of SDs like Corzine.
Hilda can't stop the endorsement of SDs like Richardson.
Hilda blew 140 mil on donuts, helicopter rides and hotel rooms
Hilda lied about being under sniper fire.

76. READ THIS:
From Mike Allen @ Politico.com:

"THE ARGUMENT — George Stephanopoulos on "World News": "Sources with direct knowledge of the conversation between Sen. Clinton and Gov. Bill Richardson … prior to the governor's endorsement of Obama, say she told him flatly, 'He cannot win, Bill. He cannot win.' "

It gets a Drudge banner and is the cover of the N.Y. Post: " 'Obama can't win' - Hill made brazen claim to sway Barack backer."

***PLAYBOOK EXCLUSIVE - PAUL HARVEY'S THE REST OF THE STORY: It turns out it was Governor Richardson who told the Clintons that he did not think Obama could win when he promised them he would not endorse Obama. According to a source with knowledge of the conversation, the governor said then that Obama was too inexperienced."

he NEVER lies...

But this is really a side thought. In a campaign where we have Hillary folks suggesting that even Obama's pledged delegates could switch their votes, how dare she get outraged when one of "her" Supes switches. That Richardson never even publicly stated his support makes it clear that he was never "hers" but still - how dare they get mouth-frothing upset by this!

95. Exactly right. He's getting sucked in to low political discourse by responding
in this way. Both are getting muddied...a goal of the underdog. Pull your opponent down into the muck, confuse voters, make clear statements gray, point fingers...

....After the last 8 years, I just detest this strategy of diminishing those who disagree without regard to truth, respect, quality of discourse. It didn't used to be this way. In the end, all of us spectators in the US and the world just have a lower opinion of the system and the players...all of them. They are ruining the institution for selfish gain.

More light, less dark. More elevation, less sinking. More respect, less false disgust. More discourse, less name calling. More gains by inspiration, less gains by disappointment. More high road, less low road. Doesn't everyone win this way?

He was only disbarred, paid a $25,000 find and admitted to knowingly giving misleading testimony - all in order to avoid criminal prosectution. (Oh, and he was barred from recovering any of his legal fees from the 'ordeal')

My apologies for wrongly stating that he had been convicted of perjury - obviously I must've been sleep deprived. :P
