Hillary Spokesperson: We Don't Think Obama Is Unelectable

On a conference call with reporters this morning, Hillary spokesperson Howard Wolfson was asked whether it's the Hillary campaign's official position that Obama can't win a general election against McCain, as Hillary is reported to have privately argued to Bill Richardson.

Wolfson's answer:

"No."

For some time now, the Hillary camp has been in a bind on this front. As her odds grow longer, it becomes necessary to sound the alarm about Obama's chances in a general election ever more loudly, to the point where the argument risks straying over the line into an assertion that he can't win at all.

Simply put, the campaign is struggling to strike a difficult balancing act: How to sow serious and enduring doubts about Obama's electability while simultaneously maintaining loyalty to the larger Democratic cause? Life ain't easy sometimes.

3. I think they got caught.
Just like Ickes Rev. Wright conversations with Super Delegates, the 'he's unelectable' comments maybe weren't supposed to make it to the media?

I said in another post - looks like the Clinton camp has some moles in it (maybe employees who haven't been paid recently???)

2. Like a bully, spread lies and innuendo, then run away when confronted.
It really is not a good reflection for Democrats.

5. But the first argument (the he's unelectable argument) made it into
AM newspapers/radio/TV programs.

That will get to some voters where the retraction will not.

However, I still think they just got caught - I don't think any of this was supposed to make it to the MSM.

6. Oh, Hil, we know that's not what you meant.
It was just a poor choice of words that have more than one meaning. More appropriately, you should have said "Obama MUST NOT win" to accurately convey your meaning.

10. she's so delusional to think that SHE'S the electable one
she's got more baggage than a Samsonite factory. The right will leave nothing of her but a greasy stain when they're done with her. Why does she think they want her to be the nominee so bad?

Instead of treating it like its a competition on American Idol?

This preoccupation with tabloid style rumormongering is getting really stale.

19. Trying to find logic in their multiple incongruent positions is a futile exersize...
Its pretty clear that the main position is they will say anything at that moment if they think it gives them a momentary advantage. Any attemp to find logic in their positions over time is a complete waste of brain power.

23. This is NOT FAIR!!1!11!!
There is a BIG DIFFERENCE between behind-the-scenes superdelegate talking points and in-your-face public talking points! It is PATENTLY UNFAIR for these JUDAS OBAMA SUPERS to be blurting out in public what is told to them in PRIVATE! Where is the common decency! Where is the PLAUSIBLE DENIABILITY?!!

31. The whole thing falls apart in the light of understanding...
that the entire Clinton Campaign managment-level staff is made up of inveterate, incorrigible liars. And that includes, in a most documentable and provable way, Bill and Hillary as well. There is, at this point, nothing that they can say that shouldn't be taken as the complete opposite of the truth.
