AP Reporting - MSNBC confirming: Clinton Raises $20 mil in March

http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/04/03/857116.aspx

From NBC's Mark Murray
The AP is reporting -- and First Read has confirmed with a campaign source -- that Clinton raised $20 million in March, about half of Obama's haul for the month. Still, as the AP notes, it is Clinton's second-best monthly performance.

What is unknown about Clinton's March haul, however, is the split between the money that can be used for the primary versus the general. In the past, a fraction of Clinton's monthly and quarterly fundraising hauls has included general-election money.

1. She is fucked big-time. She can't use all that money in the Primary
and she still owes big $$. It's near the end.

36. Exactly. She uses the top number (the gross) when the reality is much worse.
She has a much smaller donor base than Obama, thus a lot of her donors are maxed out and so they can only give to her GE fund, which she can't use in the primaries (and the donors get their money back if she doesn't get the nomination). We won't know the actual split, because she hides it until the 20th when it must be released by law.

She's really in a big financial crisis. How does she possibly compete in PA, IN, etc? She continues to stiff vendors, and look to see her trying to get as much free press as possible (more rages against Obama flyers?).

2. Significantly less than half Obama's numbers, then.

Love the happy talk. That's like working "less than 5% of the World Trade Center's employees were actually killed" into the second paragraph on 9/12.

11. Check out this chart of money raised in 2008. Clinton's March $20M take called "approximate."

14. That chart say's it all. Well nearly. I wish they would add charts with their debts also.
Pretty telling chart though by itself, I must say.

26. But if you add up what she raised in Feb and March that is greater than
what he raised only in March clearly showing donor remorse for Obama.

Moreover he hasn't raised any money for the GE so that shows that his supporters don't really think he will go that far.

One third of the money for Clinton is set aside for the GE so that shows that she is better prepared than he is for the GE.

Also she wasn't allowed to raise money in Florida or Michigan and would certainly have doubled her total.

Her average is much higher and that shows that her contributors have more faith in her than his contributors do in him.

Since she doesn't pay half of her bills she can use her money twice as much as Obama can.

Her supporters sent in more of their money by check.

More of the checks were written on the 12 largest banks than Obamas.

Most of her contributions were made in round numbers.

Obama should look at that graph and simply give up!!!

16. Why aren't more Clinton supporters putting their money where their support is?
I'm not being snarky. I really don't understand how she can be where she is in national polls and yet still be having this tough of a time raising money?

19. They're just not as enthusiastic as Obama supporters, I think.
They prefer her to Obama, but they're not maniacs about her, like we (I!) am.

Plus I think most people don't really consider contributing to a campaign. Since Obama is working so well with younger people who are more internet savvy, it's easier for them to part with $25 here and there to support their candidate. The older crowd doesn't do this as easily. Both my parents are Obama supporters, but I bet you $40M they've never given to any candidate, they just really don't know how, and phone solicitations turn them off, as they do me. When I can, however, log in and donate when and where I feel like it, it's not so much an invasion.

Just my thoughts.

David

27. The big donors have all maxed out, I'd bet.
And she can't get near the online fundraising that Obama's capable of.

That's what happens when you tie your campaign to big money and don't spend wisely. Sooner or later the money dries up and the campaign circles the drain under the weight of its own debt.

I'd be demanding that Penn and Wolfson return their fees. They obviously did not earn them.

33. Most of her committed supporters have maxed out.
Clinton heavily benefits from the Democratic power structure and the Clinton name. These allow her to pick up the votes of the highly valued casual voters. She has her diehards, but not many, which is why she gets crushed at caucuses. They'll come out to vote, probably, and they get counted in polls, but they won't spend hours at a caucus, and they aren't going to pony up a lot of dough. Her big business supporters have given all they can, and now have to dump money into 527s and things like that.

I'll be surprised if she even makes it to the PA primary.

That campaign is bleeding out.

23. I predicted this. The Clinton effect is fading.
Low on funds and high in debt. This will be further eat into her support in upcoming states.

I had expected 3/4ths of Obama tho not 1/2 This cuts into her chances of winning the nomination big time. (She has little more than name recognition and side factors on her side left)

Will she now pay her debt?

Lets keep it up Obama supporters!! Steady is winning this race!
