John Edwards would not accept VP nomination
John Edwards says would not accept VP nomination

Thu Apr 3, 2008 2:40pm EDT

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - Former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards said on Thursday he would not accept the nomination for U.S. vice president as he did four years ago.

<snip>

After his keynote speech at CTIA, the annual U.S. wireless industry showcase, Edwards was asked in a question-and-answer session if he would accept the nomination for vice president.

"No," said Edwards, who also declined to say whether he would endorse Clinton or Obama.

5. Probably not.
Many of us feel that way about John Edwards. My dear mom put it best...he is too good for this bullshit. His ideas on ending poverty in our lifetime are nothing to laugh at.

It might be a joke to you but it isn't to me.

7. They are ideas, nothing more.
He is sitting in his cozy mansion while hundreds of thousands of kids have trouble putting food on the table.

Poverty isn't a joke to me, but the fawning over do-nothing John Edwards certainly is.

13. I'm sorry that is your impression of his life's work.. Sorry, he does not just
sit on his ass and idley while away.. And to not understand that and to be a Democrat is an oxymoron.. Listen.. I don't care about the primaries or the race.. and most of us don't anymore. Have your little race, we're on a bigger path. A real vision.. We aren't hoping it happens, we are making it happen.. There is no reason to continue to banter against Edwards. He's not in the race anymore.. Don't you understand that its time to stop trying to smear a great man and a great family?

8. He could start by not consulting for hedge fund companies
He earned half a million dollars from a company that preyed on the poor. I'm not buying his "conversion" to a champion of the poor.

14. And that was to find out how it worked..when he saw what it was doing, he
did something.. Why don't you take a look at what he did with the money he earned.. and stop doing a rw smear attack on a really great Democrat.. he's not in your little race anymore. I've never seen so many people so on the attack for someone not in the race..

18. gads. he's a one term senator with a lackluster record
who's actually done very little about poverty except for talk about it. He's not in Jimmy Carter's league, and he's actually done less than Obama who spent 4 years as a community organizer working with the poor. Now maybe he will do something great in the future, but he hasn't done it yet.

21. We all have our heroes. Edwards happens to be one of mine.
I don't really care if you agree. I happen to think Obama's record has been blown way out of proportion, too.

22. Thank you, cali.
John Edwards is not at Al Gore or Jimmy Carter's level.

17. I never said he was a God.. I said he had a really great plan.. His policies were
top notch.. so top notch both Clinton and Obama are still dipping into the play book and taking things out of it. And I do believe his status has been elevated above the fray.

4. I doubt the twice failed presidential candidate would be offered the position.
He would be mocked incessantly as the perennial VP candidate and it would be his fourth campaign platform in four years.

It would be a joke.

9. is the ground work being set to offer it to Clinton?
that was my initial thought. She seems to have toned down her campaign the last couple of days.

10. Now he has a choice.
To transcend politics, or return back to being a normal politician. With all his progressive support, I could see him becoming the "Al Gore" of poverty issues.

11. Don't you have to win more than 1 primary in 8 years to be considered Al Gore?
Don't you have to win a presidential nomination or something?

15. Actually, Gore won the presidency.
But no, you don't. I've been an Obama supporter from the start, but I have always admired John Edwards for his stance on poverty issues. He was my second choice.
