We drove around in armored vehicles with M2 .50 caliber machine guns and Mark 19 full auto grenade launchers and we rolled out in Bradley fighting vehicles more than oncjust to let them know that we would. While I was there we had numerous high ranking Americans fly in and they were all heavily protected against any and all threats wherever they went. This was two years after Hillary was there. If Hillary Clinton had stepped out of the gates without protection of this sort, she would have been killed.

Hillary was making an attempt at self-deprecating humor, but since she was joking about her embellishment of a story to make herself look better, her self-deprecation turned into a revelation that the real joke was on us, because this is what you do in a campaign. You exaggerate to the American people, and you tell them grand heroic stories, because that's what they want to hear. And many will find that patronizing and insulting.

And of course her timing was a bit off as well, because snipers really aren't funny.
