Larry Johnson is a fucking punk.
I'll start this by stating unequivocally: Air America Radio is well within their rights to hand Randi Rhodes a suspension. This happens all the time at radio stations all over the country. Randi shot her mouth off, and as much as I love her she has to take the punishment. I also believe that she must realize that a suspension is the right thing for the network to do.

But there's an aspect here that is being overlooked in this whole situation, and that is the movement to have her suspended was spearheaded by someone who is supposed to be on our side - Larry Johnson of No Quarter.

Johnson egged on his readers to push for Rhodes' suspension, and when it happened today he posted an entry on his blog with the headline 'We Did It!' - pretty much gloating that he forced AAR to suspend Rhodes.

I just checked the post again (http://noquarterusa.net/blog/2008/04/03/air-americas-randy-rhodes-suspended-we-did-it/) and it looks like Johnson smells blood and wants Rhodes fired - and replaced by pro-Hillary hack Taylor Marsh.

And if you look at the comments in that blog, it looks as though they're going to try to go after another radio personality (whom I've never heard of) named Roland Martin.

Is this what certain liberals have come to - pushing to have people supposedly working for the same side thrown out of their jobs because they said something that these people found disagreeable?

This smells like the last act of supporters of a failed candidate taking out their frustration and claiming a victim, and it's punk-ass behavior, pure and simple.

Is Larry Johnson going to become the arbiter of who keeps their job in liberal radio, based on whether or not they say nice things about Hillary Clinton? What the fuck gives him the right to decide, and how far are good liberals willing to let him take this?

You all better think long and hard about whether you want to be part of this vendetta - and vendetta is the precise and accurate description of what is going on here.

You want to go around ousting liberal radio hosts that say something you don't agree with? Then you're no better than that brownshirt running the No Quarter blog, and you ought to think long and hard as to whether the term 'liberal' even applies to you any more.

Larry Johnson, you're a fucking punk. And the people who are pushing for Randi Rhodes to be fired ought to be ashamed of yourselves. You're letting a punk lead you around by the nose and engage in anti-democratic behavior.

This is not how Democrats are supposed to act. Not ever.

You gonna follow some punk-ass disruptor for the momentary thrill of having Randi Rhodes' head on a pike? Good luck with that, because you're gonna have to live with what you've done.

Rant off.

Thats hardly a Democratic ideal.

Isnt it just a little creepy that you agree with Republicans like Limbaugh and Hannity who preach censorship against those who dare to criticize their politician?

How is your position better than theirs?

29. Keep that broad brush stroking.
You aren't going to paint me with it.
If *YOU* know how Limbaugh and Hannity feel about something--that tells me CONSIDERABLY more about you.
I have NO idea how they feel, or if they care, or why they care...I find them quite irrelevant and don't find it at all hard NOT TO KNOW what they are saying...or care.
They are as irrelevant for being so right-minded as Randi and her ilk are for being so obama-minded.

You see, this spectrum works both ways for me.

I like to think for myself. I don't *need* some yack-hack shouting praises for my candidate of choice--warranted or unwarranted.
I just like the truth. Plain and simple. I know how to think. It is a trait that seems to be lacking in many these days.

83. Rhodes has no talent

That is why she got suspended, and soon to be fired. She is not entertaining. Her strident positions and her hatred for Hillary and hence any one that supports Hillary does not make for interesting or entertaining radio. Randi can still get drunk and rant and rave, but not on the airwaves on someone else's dime.

Good riddance.

On July 23, 2005, when Johnson spoke to the nation on behalf of Democrats in the party's weekly radio address, he said that he believes a letter of recommendation from Republican Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) helped to "open doors" for him at the CIA.<2> A registered Republican who supported President Bush in 2000, in his Democratic Radio Address broadcast on July 23, 2005, Johnson criticized the Bush administration for their role in the outing of CIA operative Valerie Plame.<3> In addition to his differences with Republicans in the Plame matter, Johnson is also an outspoken opponent of the Iraq War<4> He was also featured in the 2004 political documentary Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism.<5> Since Robert Novak's controversial disclosure of Valerie Plame as a CIA operative in July 2003, Johnson has contributed to public discourse on intelligence matters, often sparking further controversy. He has been interviewed by both the mass media and the alternative media and published commentary on the Plame affair, the controversy concerning Mary McCarthy, and the resignation of Porter Goss as Director of Central Intelligence.

He has been great for progressives. I may not agree with the lengths he went to on Randy, but I'm certainly not going to start bashing him now.

66. I don't see that noted in Wiki.....

After September 11, Johnson appeared several times on FOX News to address the question of military action against terrorism. On 14 November, he defended the FBI's proposal to interview 5,000 students in the U.S. suspected of having information relevant to the September 11 investigations:

I think they should talk to everyone that they feel they have a need to talk to. I mean, look, this is war. This is not a legal proceeding. This isn't the O.J. Simpson trial. The folks that attacked us -- they murdered Americans. And we've got to recognize that in wartime, we should do things differently.<18>

--------------------------------------------------
In May 2003, Johnson joined members of Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS) in condemning the manipulation of intelligence for political purposes:

It is a misuse and abuse of intelligence. The president was being misled. He was ill served by the folks who are supposed to protect him on this. Whether this was witting or unwitting, I don't know, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.<22>

Oh God I wish it were true. I rented a van to take my family from Indiana to Colorado. I have XM in my truck, so I can get progressive radio. But between there and back, I changed channels getting Beck Hannity OReilly...you know the norm. Going through St. Louis I got Randi...coming back in the morn..the same station..got Dennis Miller. That was it. The whole trip. Where the hell is the dozen? I would venture to say...taking a great chance mind you..you don't know what the hell you are talking about in this case. You don't like Randi..that is obvious. But she works for many of us.

I have defended Randi and her actions in the past. Do yourself a little search.
There came a time though, that defending idiocy and listening to stark ranting and lunatic raving didn't serve my psyche well--so I stopped.
I equate "ANY" blatant partisan--either rightwing or leftwing--as a "dime a dozen".
They really aren't any different.
The REAL talent lies in those that can tell unvarnished truths--even when those truths might be painful. Those are the ones we need on the airwaves, not the partisan hack-jobs who would support obama/bush if they ate live babies in the WH rotunda. Those people are dangerous--no matter WHO they support.

has been a champion for liberal cause for a long time. Waay before this election. The same thing for Malloy back in the 90s.

It's Randi who in West Palm Beach was fired because she was kicking lush limpballs ass in ratings. The people who put Rush on bought the station and replaced her. They rehired her for the 3:00 slot. So she has been taking on the far right for awhile.

I mean randi is a woman and you are attacking "her kind".

Is that not the Hillary supporter standard for sexism, any gender specific insult aimed at someone with a vagina?

Or is it just any insult aimed at someone with a vagina named Hillary who is losing a primary?

Oh wait... I probably shouldn't use the word aim, or Hillary might try to spin this post as some heroic military experience.

Truthfully, I've never been real crazy about Randi - I don't have a lot of respect for women who have to act "sexy" in order to get ahead.

43. Fair enough.
I come down on Randi's side, because I think she's done more good for the liberal cause than harm, even if you include her remarks from SF.

But I think you're off-base with the 'acting sexy to get ahead' thing. Randi's on-air persona may be one thing, but you shouldn't let it fool you. She's all about business, and she was successful long before she got to AAR.

she always told him what a hero he was and how much she admired him
"Larry Johnson, you rock!" -- stuff like that

It would be interesting to search the archives of the show and listen to those interviews again

why would he do this?

52. That's exactly what this is.
Any American citizen is well within their rights to complain about a public figure like Rhodes, and he got the job done - he called for Rhodes' suspension and got it.

But now he wants Rhodes fired and replaced by Taylor Marsh? It all becomes transparent with that action, because Marsh is every bit as biased as people are claiming Randi is.

That's why I called him a punk. He deserves to be called a punk for what he's doing.

37. Good riddance Randi.
There are ways of supporting your preferred candidate without destroying the other half of the party.

Kudos. Her airtime can be put to better use.

The major delusion is that she's on the same side. She's not. She's on half of our side, the other half are "fucking whores". We don't need that.

Rush is better. He unites democrats. Rhodes divides democrats.

"There are ways of supporting your preferred candidate without destroying the other half of the party."

“I think you'll be able to imagine many things Senator McCain will be able to say,” she said. “He’s never been the president, but he will put forth his lifetime of experience. I will put forth my lifetime of experience. Senator Obama will put forth a speech he made in 2002.”

Lemme guess, she was just telling the truth so it's ok.. :eyes:

I thought Randi went too far, and I think Larry Johnson went too far. I think both have been good for progressives and I wouldn't bash either of them.

45. Randi Rhodes loved Bill Clinton...
I used to listen, way back when I was home during the day. She would never allow anything negative to be said against Bill without challenging it. She even had a one on one interview with him, which was nothing short of a lovefest. Now the Clintons want her career ended. These are the kind of people some here want to have the power of the presidency? What did you expect her to do when we found out that the whole Canada-NAFTA thing was disinformation? For all of her faults, at least Randi Rhodes is honest. That's more than I can say for most of her detractors.

but that's when we were all still in love with the Clintons. Now that the scales have fallen from our eyes, it's not a pretty picture. Randi still has friends in the media, she'll be fine. And it's Air America's loss, Randi has been their cash cow. This is a very disturbing trend indeed.

59. Agreed. I find it disturbing that the Clinton worshippers have joined
forces with the rightwing to take out liberal voices. It makes me very uncomfortable. I was disturbed by this when Bill O'Reilly went after Keith with a petition, and this is even more disturbing that "Democrats" are trying to silence the voices that don't toe their partisan line. If I don't care for a show, I choose something else, which is why I don't watch Fox. Seems so simple to me.

67. I really do like Randi Rhodes
Edited on Fri Apr-04-08 01:18 AM by SunsetDreams
however, she was wrong for what she did. She should have been suspended. However, I think it is totally taking it too far for them to ask that she be fired. It is up to Air America what they do. Now they are suggesting she be replaced by Taylor Marsh? LOL They only want someone in there who bows down to Hillary.

If Hillary can't take the criticism from progressives disagreeing with her, while she is running for office, she needs to get out. It's not up to us to hold a candidates hand, and gently nudge them along.

I could have agreed with just the suspension, but this is going way to far. So all the people pushing this, really should be ashamed.

What Larry did was despicable. I'm appalled that a so-called 'liberal' would stoop this low.

I plan on writing something about this on my blog tomorrow morning (I put up a couple Rhodes-related entries earlier). I also plan on saying some not-so-nice things about Geraldine Ferraro, who also called for Rhodes' firing. Quite frankly, I've got a couple choice words I could direct her way, but I won't say them. Randi already said them for me.

73. Where do people get the idea that Johnson is a liberal?
He was a long time Republican. Was a Faux News analyst. He got acclaim on the left when he came out against the Administration on the Plame matter. He may have broken with the Republican party but that in itself, even his support of Hillary, doesn't instantly make him a liberal.

50% of AAR listeners. If for nothing else, that is bad for business

Calling a candidate a "fuc*ing whore", is unprofessional, and a direct insult to Hillary supporters

A stupid thing for her to do, and I am saying this as an Obama supporters, who can't stand Hillary, but will vote for her if she gets the nomination

However, I also think that the racist statements made by beck, hannity, buchanan, and others should be accountable, and they are NOT. There used to be a code in broadcasting. The airwaves ARE NOT OWNED BY THE CORPORATIONS, BUT THE PUBLIC

80. I am horribly disappointed in Larry Johnson's behavior.
Edited on Fri Apr-04-08 03:29 AM by myrna minx
I have watched him on Olbermann and have actually heard him on the Randi Rhodes program in the past, and found him to be a knowledgeable, credible spokesperson for the injustices committed against the Wilsons. While I honor his service to our country, and his unwaivering support of the Wilsons during the I Scooter Libby trial, I have read some of his recent missives that have given me great pause, and I feel embarrassed that I had ever found him to be be an authentic commentator, without guile.

While I completely understand why AAR suspended Randi for comments that were more appropriate for someone's private living room and and not a radio sponsored event, I find it disturbing that Johnson and others would join figurative conga line, celebrating the removal of a liberal talk show host. Pick or pan her, she is one of the only liberal voices out there in a marketplace that has been propped up by conservative investors who will *pay* stations to broadcast the conservative barker du jour. All I can say is that is that the short sighted celebratory dance that some folks are currently having, demonstrates the short sighted vision of not having a primary/caucus plan after Super Tuesday.

I have personally considered myself a Randi fan in the past, but I did find myself grow weary of her self important ego, but regardless, I found her to be an important voice to be heard. Ed Schultz is not my favorite by any means, but I saw a deceptive, yet celebratory thread today heralding the removal of Schultz from a Florida station because he was not a Hillary supporter. (He was, apparently replaced with Thom Hartman) While I in no way will defend what Randi Rhodes said, is this what we really want? Do we savage our own because we disagree? I sometimes think that *some* Hillary surrogates suffer from a perceived Cassandra Complex, that if all the contrarians are eliminated, then everyone will see what they see. Yet after that, all that is left is right wing radio. Perhaps that's unfair, but that is how I feel this night.

94. Randi Rhodes stepped over the line. WAY over the line.
Not for her own personal opinion, of course. She is free to have it and express it.

But when she's representing a company, she's got to know where the line is. And she stepped way over.

This is no different than organizing boycotts against companies who advertise on shows we disagree with. It is not absolutely wrong to call for her suspension, or even her dismissal.

Larry Johnson is doing a great job exposing Republican bullshit. So is Randi, for that matter. But eviscerating a fellow Democrat like that is over the line.
