Presidential candidates in Memphis |
|
I will admit that when MSNBC announced that two candidates were in Memphis to mark the 40th anniversary of King's death that I thought it was Barack and Hillary. However, then they said that it was actually Hillary and McCain in Memphis to mark his death. They said Barack is in Indiana and plans to give a speech about King. I'm not sure how I feel about this. When he did not go to Tavis' event I did not have a problem with that. He needed to spend every minute that he had campaigning in Ohio and Texas because those contests were coming up soon. However, he has 5 weeks left before Indiana. I think he should have gone to Memphis also. However, I guess I will just have to trust Barack on this. I'm sure he had his reasons for not going there. The crime is so bad in Memphis now (I was born there and grew up in Millington which is just outside of Memphis) but I'm sure they would have been able to keep him safe. Oh well....I look forward to hopefully watching Barack's speech in Indiana. I'm sure it will be a touching one. I hope there is a live feed. I doubt the networks would carry it...

1. Obama is in Indianapolis where Bobby Kennedy spoke following Dr. Kings death |
|
Where Bobby went into the inner city without police escort and gave one of the most moving speeches off the cuff which is believed to have helped unite the city and prevent violence seen in almost every other city.

2. I don't think a person has to go to the site to commemorate an event |
|
Presidential candidates didn't fly to Dallas in November did they? To me Obama even being in the race is about as high a tribute to Dr. King as this country can get. I am sure the good senator will honor Dr. King with an extremely well thought out speech.

3. This going to be good! |

Obama will get a pass, as he always does, by his supporters. Hillary on the other hand, can't even make a joke about herself without several "outraged" posters starting hateful threads.
Yes, both our Democratic candidates should have gone to Memphis because this is a significant anniversary. It's been 40 years and it should be remembered appropriately.
I don't know about McCain, but Hillary was deeply affected by his death. Obama was too young to probably remember it at all. I'm glad that she went to Memphis to pay tribute to Dr. King.

6. You have problem in reading comprehension? |

When did I say that Obama hates black people? The OP is asking if Obama should have gone to Memphis and I said yes.

5. So deeply affected that she renounced her part in the Goldwater Girls |
|

Because we all know that Senator Goldwater stood for the same things.

I guess no Republican is entitled to become a Democrat. Particularly a young woman who was raised in a very conservative household and was so profoundly touched by the main events of the 60s that she evolved into an advocate for civil rights, women's rights and children's rights?
I really think that some of you have jumped the shark and have forgotten that she's been a Democrat way before Obama even knew the meaning of the word.

9. I read somewhere that this actually was a big factor in her conversion |
|
I believe this because MLK had a big impact on many people.
I don't think Obama had to be there. He is spreading the message and marking this day by spreading King's message.
I think it is very important that he is in Indianapolis where Bobby Kennedy gave his famous speech.
