Why is it that when Obama doesn't participate in an event that's seen as "black," people ask
whether he's avoiding it because he doesn't want to be seen as "too black." Yet when white candidates don't participate in similarly all-white events, they are never asked whether they are trying to avoid being seen as "too white?"

Just wondering.

1. In fact, Obama is in Indiana where Bobby Kennedy gave his heartfelt speech
in the inner city without police escort appealing for peace and unity upon MLK's death and this speech is largely credited with the reason Indianapolis didn't explode with violence like most other cities.

2. Despite the ugliness, I still want to think that this election cycle is

a giant step in moving the U.S. past that question. The youth I work with
a) were-- in general-- ready for Obama as president and b) are--for the most part--horrified by the racial crap that has come up. Just as younger people turned against the Viet Nam war early on, I hear backlash against racism.

4. No - it means "people ask" - as they have been doing all day today
If you haven't heard or seen it, you're just not paying attention.

6. people forget that he's half-white as well.
They need to be reminded that he's already moved on to the next chapter of identity: HUMAN.

9. Because our national mindset has "white" as the default setting
White people are Americans. "Other" people are African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, and Native Americans.
Don't ever hear too much about the Caucasian Americans, do we?
