68. Politico's Ben Smith notes that roughly $18 million is unaccounted for in the summary.
Edited on Fri Apr-04-08 03:48 PM by flpoljunkie
UPDATE: The interesting part, of course, is the roughly $18 million that the summary doesn't account for.

The Clintons' taxes

Long-awaited, they arrive — when else — at 4:00 p.m. Friday.

The Clintons' joint returns show them earning more than $109 million over a period of seven years.

The biggest source of income is Bill Clinton's speeches — source of $51 million. He made another $30 million from books; Hillary made about $10 million from her book.

Spokesman Jay Carson says, in a statement:

The Clintons have now made public thirty years of tax returns, a record matched by few people in public service. None of Hillary Clinton's presidential opponents have revealed anything close to this amount of personal financial information.

What the Clintons' tax returns show is that they paid more than $33,000,000 in federal taxes and donated more than $10,000,000 to charities over the past eight years. They paid taxes and made charitable contributions at a higher rate than taxpayers at their income level.

You can download them, and see a summary, here. They include detailed returns for 2000 through 2006, and the request for an extension for last year.

If you're poring over them, let me know what you find.

ALSO: The returns went early to Drudge — who has been extremely hard on Hillary for months — as good proof as any since the time of Machiavelli that it's better to be feared than loved.

UPDATE: The interesting part, of course, is the roughly $18 million that the summary doesn't account for.

You may be right, this is Washington after all. But, if it's above board and legal, so what? I'm dirt poor but I don't begrudge people making money unless they do it off the backs of those who really earned it. Speaking engagements, book deals...those are legal and I have no problems with that.

They pandered to the wealthy and the corporate interests ever since Bill was first elected, getting repaid after he left office doesnt surprise me.

(Graft isnt graft if they wait long enough to collect I suppose.....)

The only surprise from this will be seeing Clinton supporters twist going from being in the hole after Bill left office in debt to his lawyers, to reporting 110 million in a few years time.

57. An oddity I noticed right off...
I have an accounting degree and I do a lot of personal income tax returns.

I have not manually typed a return for about 10 yrs.
These returns numbers are not the commonly used font.

All accountants and tax preparers do taxes with software, I cannot even imagine doing them long hand anymore, sometimes I do some calculations, just to make sure.

I may be right, I may not be, but I do think they look typed on a typewriter instead of printed from a printer.

66. How much did Senator Obama get for his books?
Edited on Fri Apr-04-08 03:46 PM by riskpeace
It seemed that more than half of the money is from Bill Clinton's speeches. Will Senator Obama give up paid speeches after he is President?

Senator Clinton contributed (nicely, I might add) with the $10 million in book income and the Senate salary. How much would Michelle Obama's salary add up to over 7 years?

In this country, most of the elected officials at the national level are rich or certainly comfortable. I know I can't afford a house and yard like either Senator Obama or Senator Clinton enjoy. I'd still vote for either one in November.

80. She's made enough money. Why does she want to be president?
I really don't get it. When is enough, enough? It's not like the Clintons are going to be vehicles of change. The same old alliances and same old way of doing dirty business is going to continue under a Hillary Clinton presidency as it ever has before. Isn't that kind of money enough to keep someone satisfied when they're really not going into the job to do anything worthwhile?
