The Clintons are the poster children for mindless boomer entitlement
Edited on Fri Apr-04-08 05:18 PM by BeyondGeography
Can Democrats please stop enabling these people? They come to the White House with basically nothing financially, spend the post-presidency period running up the score financially, taking money from virtually any and every corner...fine, that's America. But now they would have us return them to the White House.

What is this, Boomer Entitlement Day? Sending these people back to the White House is a recipe for political disaster. Don't we Democrats understand that each and every policy argument that a Hillary Clinton White House engages in would be viewed through the prism of the Clintons personal finances whenever possible?

A favorable ruling for Wall St., musta been that $650K that Goldman Sachs paid Bill for the speeches. Soft on outsourcing, musta been those free rides with Gupta. Investment tax loopholes still not closed. Yucaipa is registered in the Cayman Islands, isn't it? Etc., etc.

The Clintons, political animals that they are, should know better. But when's the last time they were told, "no" by anyone besides Obama voters? They think they can and should have it all, over and over again. They have become cartoon characters of their own making. The sooner the Democratic Party moves on, the better.

On edit: I write this as a boomer. Try not to be silly and take it as smear of all people born from 1949 to 1964. It's a criticism of that generation's penchant for excess, which is undeniable.

I sometimes wonder how much the RNC is paying these guys, and if they aren't, they should be....they sure earn their keep!

That's what he said when asked why he diddled Monica. That speaks volumes about the Me Generation.

30. Baby boomers
It's a term from the 70s to describe those born right after WWII.

32. So boomers are the ME generation, right?
I just want to be sure I understand that boomers are equated with the term the ME generation before I respond.

33. Boomers were the FIRST generation to be called the Me Generation
It was during the early 70s. Maybe the advent of reliable birth control had something to do with it--less focus on a younger generation. But I think the term has been used from in different contexts since then to describe other groups. But I think the current vogue is to use the term Generation Me to describe the same thing in young people of today.

34. I couldn't find a cite
that said the boomers were part of the ME generation. My understanding was it was folks who were born 1970 or after, and I've found many which support that.

Could you provide one that says the boomers have been so self-absorbed that they didn't find the time to:

Fight against the American war against Vietnam?
Start the Women's Movement?
Start the concept of affirmative action?
Enact the Family Medical Leave Act?

And my list could go on for a very long time if I didn't have an important protest to travel to tomorrow and I gotta get ready for that.

As far as entitlement issues, let me tell you just one story.

I have a little great-niece who was born in 1973. She is a beautiful girl and one day in the last ten years or so we were talking about abortion rights. She said she didn't believe in abortion. I said, "That is fine, but there might come a time when you or someone you love might need to have an abortion for many different, difficult reasons, and that is why it is important that women retain the right to have control of their own bodies." The conversation went on to a general discussion of women's rights and when I told her that there was a time when women in the United States couldn't even have a checking account of their own without their manly man spouse approving of it, she laughed and said, "Oh, Auntie, that's not true!"

And all I have to say about it is that I've worked my ASS off over 40 years so that she could be free of such repression, beginning in high school. That she is so stupid as to not know history just boggles my mind. There will come a time when the real ME generation is going to have to pick up the baton and do some work for themselves by getting involved in the process. I'm happy to see some of that this year.

It's hard work. It's sacrifice. It's rewarding (eventually).

Meanwhile, I'll take my Social Security and my retirement when my time comes and I will fight against ANYONE who tries to stop me or anyone else who has managed to drag themselves out of bed day after day and go to work, learn the ropes of this "reality," and who have found it in their hearts to share their money, time and effort with the less fortunate and on behalf of the stupid. I earned them.

35. See Dr. Jean Twenge
I was drawing primarily on a book by Dr. Twenge, called Generation Me. She talks about the Me Generation (the Boomers) in juxtaposition to what she calls Generation Me. She talks about duty vs. self and how that has developed through the generations, but she doesn't term it as "self absorption". See http://www.generationme.org/aboutbook.html

12. Oh, please.
There are at least eight hundred very good, solid reasons why the Clinton's shouldn't be back in the White House. This isn't one of them. To suggest that they've been hanging around waiting for some kind of entitlement is ridiculous. They *earned* what they got. You may not like the way they earned it, but we are not talking about trust fund kiddies here.

15. "Entitlement" is when you see nothing wrong with the picture
As I said, they can have the money after they've had power, but now they want power again. Now power OWES money.

It's nuts.

I think I'm entitled to Medicare and Social Security. I got more then 40+ years of pay stubs to back up my entitlement. And almost 40 years as a member of the democratic party. Try as you all might, ya ain't running me off.

And I have to tell you, I find this kind of money shameful. Nobody needs this kind of money. I don't mind people having success and being comfortable, even if that means a few million dollars. But when do we start thinking about the disparity of wealth in this country? When does it start to matter? Blech.

24. Please don't go there.
Criticize the Clintons if you feel like it, fine. But the bashing of "boomers" -- including from boomers! -- isn't helpful.

There are people in ALL generations who've made money, or are "political animals," or "penchants for excess." I think it'd be a good idea to be particularly sensitive, for the sake of Obama's campaign, to stay away from even a hint of divisive boomer bashing, from here on out.

It now appears most of their charitable contributions were to the Clinton Family Foundation. No doubt following in the footsteps of Ken and Linda Lay and their Lay Family Foundation.

36. "Boomer Entitlement Day"? I like it! Is it September 14---the first day of Nixon's draft? Or maybe
11/22, when we were scarred for life by the JFK Assassination? Perhaps a combo of May 8 and August 15, representing the days WWII officially ended, a war in which MOST of our FATHERS fought in?

Ah, what the heck; just make it February 9.
