World's cleanest home-office

A couple of readers spotted this on the Clintons' 2003 return, in an addendum to the form for "Expenses for business use of your home."

Clintons Dissolve Blind Financial Trust

Millions in Stock Converted to Cash to Avoid Campaign Conflicts

By John Solomon
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, June 15, 2007; Page A01

Bill and Hillary Clinton have dissolved the blind trust that has managed their investments since they entered the White House in 1993, converting all stocks to cash to avoid financial conflicts as she runs for president, according to documents to be filed today with federal ethics officials.

The documents reviewed by The Washington Post provide the most complete accounting of how the Clintons accrued the $5 million to $25 million in the trust -- nearly all since leaving the White House -- through investments in foreign companies, oil giants and drugmakers without their input or knowledge and without public disclosure.

<...>

The couple chose instead to dissolve the trust on April 27 and to convert all their stocks to cash to avoid any questions about possible conflicts of interests, the Clintons' legal and financial advisers said. Their portfolio will be limited to cash accounts and U.S. Treasury notes, the advisers said.

In doing so, the Clintons will incur a large capital gains tax bill for 2007 and will reduce their ability to earn new money because savings accounts and certificates of deposit traditionally offer lower rates of return than Wall Street, the advisers said. In all, the Clintons have total assets of $10 million to $50 million with no substantial debts.

Wonder if that's why Hillary voted twice to extend Bush tax cuts?

Hillary voted to extend them:

Voted YES on retaining reduced taxes on capital gains & dividends.

Vote to reduce federal spending by $56.1 billion over five years by retaining a reduced tax rate on capital gains and dividends, as well as.

  • Decreasing the number of people that will be required to pay the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT)
  • Allowing for deductions of state and local general sales taxes through 2007 instead of 2006
  • Lengthening tax credits for research expenses
  • Increasing the age limit for eligibility for food stamp recipients from 25 to 35 years
  • Continuing reduced tax rates of 15% and 5% on capital gains and dividends through 2010
  • Extending through 2007 the expense allowances for environmental remediation costs (the cost of cleanup of sites where petroleum products have been released or disposed)
Status: Bill passed Bill passed, 66-31

Roll Call

Voted YES on extending the tax cuts on capital gains and dividends.

This large piece of legislation (418 pages) includes numerous provisions, generally related to extending the tax cuts initiated by President Bush. This vote was on final passage of the bill. The specific provisions include:

  1. Extension Of Expiring Provisions: for business expenses, retirement savings contributions, higher education expenses, new markets tax credit, and deducting state and local sales taxes.
  2. Provisions Relating To Charitable Donations, and Reforming Charitable Organizations
  3. Improved Accountability of Donor Advised Funds
  4. Improvements in Efficiency and Safeguards in IRS Collection

Opponents of the bill recommend voting NAY because: Health care for children (among many other things) should come before tax cuts for the wealthy.

The 2-year cost of the extensions on capital gains tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans is $20 billion. So if we defer the tax break the administration is pushing for the wealthiest people in America, we would have enough money to provide basic health insurance for every uninsured child in America, and we would eliminate 20% of the uninsured Americans with that single act alone.
  • Proponents of the bill recommend voting YEA because: The largest provision in the bill--about $30 billion of tax relief--amounts to half of the net tax package and is designed to keep 14 million people out of the Alternative Minimum Tax. The AMT is terrible and should be repealed.
  • College tuition benefits for families who send their kids to college -- by definition, this benefit goes to middle-income families.
  • The small savers' credit -- for low-income folks that save through an IRA or pension plan.
  • Many small businesses use the small business expensing benefit to buy equipment on an efficient after-tax basis. It is good for small business. It is good for economic growth. Reference: Tax Relief Act of 2005; Bill S. 2020 ; vote number 2005-347 on Nov 18, 2005

    15. What Did Bill Clinton Do To Get $15M From Ron Burkle?

What Did Bill Clinton Do To Get $15M From Ron Burkle?

The campaign press statement accompanying the release on Friday of Hillary Clinton's 2000 - 2007 tax returns includes some useful summary data for the media: Bill and Hillary Clinton's total income over the past 8 years, $109 million; her Senate salary, $1.1 million; his presidential pension, $1.2 million; her book royalties, $10.5 million; his book royalties, $29.6 million; and his speaking fees, $51.9 million.

One big line item is missing from the press summary however: the $15 million paid to Bill Clinton between 2003 and 2007 by Ron Burkle's Yucaipa Global Opportunities Fund.

In fact, the Burkle payments, buried deep in the income tax forms themselves, were the only real news in tax documents, which were made public for the first time.

The Clintons' huge book profits, her salary and his speaking fees, were all well known. Hillary Clinton has been required to disclose details on many of those sources of income in the annual financial disclosure statements she has to file as a member of the U.S. Senate.

But until the release of the tax returns on April 4, the only disclosure Hillary Clinton had made about her husband's financial relationship with Burkle was the fact that Bill Clinton earned "more than $1,000" annually from the partnerships.

Now that the Clintons have disclosed that the former president received from 250 to 500 times "more than $1,000" each year since 2002, the glaring question that remains unanswered is: What did he do for all this pocket change?

Clinton campaign spokesman Jay Carson provided a statement that did not reveal much:

"The President provides his best advice on potential investments, advocates generally on behalf of the funds, and seeks to create opportunities for investors to consider investing in these funds or in the investments the funds make."

In more common parlance, this translates to "rainmaker" and "door opener."

Burkle, who is worth at least $2.5 billion according to Forbes, and Clinton are business and social partners, often traveling the Los Angeles social circuit together.

    16. ohmygod what a load of crap coming from people who have no idea
    about taxes apparently.

What is amazing to me is that the same people who scrutinize Clinton for every dotted i and crossed t have no idea how much money the slum lord gave Obama. He has told many different stories about it..and there is absolutely no scrutiny. And that tells me, that the scrutiny given to Clinton is not to find out any truth, but to find any dot or cross to distort and lie and bash.

    Have fun prosense.

    92. As a former Chicagoan, I don't really want that kind of disrespect
I don't wanna go out on a limb defending the chicago Tribune

But we aren't all liars or cheats. I grew up in A Republican household, with a dad who had attended grammar school with Richard Daley the Fist.

He could have sold out at any point in time, but he never took any jobs his child hood buddy offered him. There were very few times my dad lied. (And then things like telling my mom that she looked great inthat dress, or whatever.)

And of course, we were Republicans in part because we opposed the Daley machine.

And these days, I log in from my house here in CA to attend Trinity church on Sundays.

    142. I'm tempted to say you would have to live somewhere else to understand how well
Chicago works. So I will go ahead and say it.

Part of what helps is that Chitown is all centralized - one single 3 to 4 million person megalpolis.

The San Francisco Bay area is hundreds of separate entities - small suburbs like San Anslemo or Belmont -each claiming the right to have their own school system, their own transit system etc.

I am reminded of how many things Chicago does right every time I get off at O Hare and USING PUBLIC TRANSIT some mere two and a half hours later I am in a suburb some seventy miles away (assuming I am not tardy for the train I need.)

In the Bay area that same seventy mile commute might take as long as ELEVEN TO FOURTEEN HOURS. And cost nine times as much.

If we are going to use the Politico now...I guess some people will need to fill in the gaps in their research.

$94,000+ was spent on Cleaning (maids/cleaning people)/Maintenence/Landscaping (probably)/Pool Chemicals & Cleaning (if they have one)/ Drain Maintenence/Light Repairs & Installation/Virtually any other non-capitalized expenditure for the home.

Hillary, since she has an exclusive, functional office in her home that is used strictly for business and or business storage is allowed to take the following deduction:

SQ Footage of Exclusive Home Office

    /

    Total SQ Footage of Home

    X

    Costs of Maintaining Home

= Business Use of Home Deduction

In Hillary's case, 10% of her home is dedicated strictly for her home office and business storage. She can even depreciate the home office for further tax benefits.

    $45/week for plant service
    $35/week for aquarium cleaning
    $60/week for cleaning supplies
    $380/week for landscaping
$195/week for pool chemicals & cleaning
    $1900 to fix broken steps
$2000 for home energy audit & window re-sealing
    $1300/quarter for carpet cleaning
$850/quarter to clean & maintain natural hardwood floors
$4500 to strip & stain fence
    $6000 for exterior painting
    $3000 for interior painting
    $1500 to fix water heater
$375 to removed hair clog in sink
    $180 for HVAC filters
    $20 for smoke detector batteries
$400 to fix broken window from neighbors baseball

A plea to stop calling out Hillary for her lies and dirty tactics doesn't work.

It's like the hypocrisy with Mark Penn: Hillary and Bill were angry and disappointed to learn that he was dealing with the Columbian government (not Blackwater and others). So he left, no she asked him to step down, no not really, he's still there.

    107. Yes....I pointed that out several times.
If you are going to spread incorrect information(even after it was corrected and pointed out to you), then yes it is about you.

    109. See, your response to the comment at the link shows your current comment
    is spin

You were interested in showing the OP was disingenuous. In fact, when it was posted the it was not an assertion, but a question. So was the question about Bush's tax cuts.

And you're wrong, this OP isn't about me.

    111. Blah Blah Blah
I knew, when I read the first edition of the article, what was really being discussed. I didn't buy the writer's spin, just like I didn't buy yours. I tried to explain the real issue to you. I asked if you understood the issue. I got a very "not nice" answer.

I explained the issue, then you proceeded to tell me it was still "too much" money. I gave you a sample of what might make up that figure, and you laughed.

So, by continuing to defend incorrect information, and then attack the explaination of why it was correct, you made this about you.

    115. Who's defending it? The clarification speaks for itself. Maybe there is
a good explanation for the votes to extend Bush's tax cuts, though I haven't seen one.

You seem to believe that because Hillary has a problem owning up to mistakes, it's everyone else's problem.

Your responses have been an attempt at gotcha.

Doesn't matter, you can scrutinize any OP, the facts will speak for themselves.

    79. The office thing is kinda silly...
It is probably the "TOTAL" cleaning bill and then the deduction will just be the portion that went to cleaning the office.

For example, if you own a 10,000 SQFT home and 1000 SQ FT make up the "home office" and you spend 100,000 cleaning the entire property, you get to deduct 10% of that number or 10K for the cleaning of the office.

    139. You got me agreein' now!!!!
The problem with being hyper-rich (from a practical perspective) is that you have a dozen or more underlings doing things about which you haven't a clue. However, just because you don't know about it (there's this little thing called fiduciary responsibility) doesn't make it right!

I dislike Clinton, not because she has managed to amass a great deal of wealth (through whatever means), but because I think in her campaign she has shown characters that I dislike greatly (and that (God I say it) reminds me of things not too far from the 'Pukes I have known and detested).

In principle, however, I am against knocking someone off the list because they are rich--several of the best I have ever known could buy my soul a hundred times over.

If you have something else, post goddamn it! We ALL deserve to know (and I won't mourn, that is a promise).
