11. I think the book bag thing is just silly

I didn't find her speech truthful, but that book bag thing is just silly.

Though it did remind me of how my father would spend a few nights every new school year wrapping our textbooks using brown paper bags and/or newspaper. He made the edges sharp and neat, looking back on it now, I realize he was obsessive about his perfection in the wrapping.

LOL, so I suppose good has come from the silly for me. Good, warm memories.

Hey - we were REALLY poor, but I don't think only poor kids did that, back then.

my parents couldn't afford to replace textbooks - they covered them to protect them and we were taught to respect all books, they couldn't be man handled or their spines broken.

Hand me downs made up my entire wardrobe for most of my school years, I was the shortest and got everyones clothes as they grew out of them. We weren't wealthy, we didn't have everything we wanted when we wanted, we ate pretty good and left overs were never throw away (meat loaf sandwiches are still very special indeed) but I never considered us poor. Mom called us here gold, she said she was rich in love and money didn't matter.

I remember how exciting it was - new pencils, new tablets, newly covered books.

20. It really was exciting. Like Christmas in late August.

I particularly recall starting high school - 10th grade. It was August 1957 and I'd gotten my books for the new school year. One was Plane Geometry and it was really intriguing to me. I'd been taking Mechanical Drawing and was excelling at it ... but I'd struggled with Algebra.

So I cracked the book and started reading. It made sense. It was (lo and behold!) logical! It was about "proofs"! Wow! I was hooked. Before classes started I was on the last chapter. I loved it. Within about 2-3 weeks, the teacher had me moved into AP Math. Looking at my grades (B's and C's) in Algebra, she wondered why they weren't higher. I tried to explain how it took me a long time to get the notion of 'letters' instead of 'numbers' into my thick skull. I was on to AP Math ... taught by the basketball coach. It was a blast!

The new books ... all that FRESH looseleaf paper ... new pencils ... new binders. Wow! Even the smells got to me.

21. I had trouble with numbers.

I could solve algebra problems, but not using the required formulas. It ws very frustrating for me and infuriating for my teachers. I've since come to realize I have numeric dyslexia - "dyscalculia"

And yes, the smells of the new tablets and school supplies got to me too.

17. 12 here - 8 girls 4 boys. Lucky me, I had 2 boys ahead of me so I ended up with THEIR

handmedowns. Heh....you should see the pics of me with holey 'poloshirts' and ragged shorts.

Good thing we wore uniforms for school. My dad exchanged electrical work for the church so we could attend school (Catholic).

Catholic elementary school when the nuns wore those full habits that had more hidden pockets than they had skin exposed (to hold their rulers and rosaries and handkerchiefs and dodge balls) and they didn't walk, they floated across the floor. I had an older brother in seminary school and my parents, like your father, exchanged doing work at the school and church to be able to provide us with the education.

We wore the uniforms too. It wasn't until public schools in junior high that I discovered I was fashion challenged (those damn hand me downs).

She should just exit public life. It's an embarrassment.
