10 things you should know about John McCain :
Edited on Sat Apr-05-08 05:33 PM by RazBerryBeret
From MoveON:

1. John McCain voted against establishing a national holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Now he says his position has "evolved," yet he's continued to oppose key civil rights laws.

2. According to Bloomberg News, McCain is more hawkish than Bush on Iraq, Russia and China. Conservative columnist Pat Buchanan says McCain "will make Cheney look like Gandhi."

3. His reputation is built on his opposition to torture, but McCain voted against a bill to ban waterboarding, and then applauded President Bush for vetoing that ban.

4. McCain opposes a woman's right to choose. He said, "I do not support Roe versus Wade. It should be overturned."

5. The Children's Defense Fund rated McCain as the worst senator in Congress for children. He voted against the children's health care bill last year, then defended Bush's veto of the bill.

6. He's one of the richest people in a Senate filled with millionaires. The Associated Press reports he and his wife own at least eight homes! Yet McCain says the solution to the housing crisis is for people facing foreclosure to get a "second job" and skip their vacations.

7. Many of McCain's fellow Republican senators say he's too reckless to be commander in chief. One Republican senator said: "The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine. He's erratic. He's hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me."

8. McCain talks a lot about taking on special interests, but his campaign manager and top advisers are actually lobbyists. The government watchdog group Public Citizen says McCain has 59 lobbyists raising money for his campaign, more than any of the other presidential candidates.

9. McCain has sought closer ties to the extreme religious right in recent years. The pastor McCain calls his "spiritual guide," Rod Parsley, believes America's founding mission is to destroy Islam, which he calls a "false religion." McCain sought the political support of right-wing preacher John Hagee, who believes Hurricane Katrina was God's punishment for gay rights and called the Catholic Church "the Antichrist" and a "false cult."

10. He positions himself as pro-environment, but he scored a 0—yes, zero—from the League of Conservation Voters last year.

6. More than just against Roe, he also supported the South Dakota anti-abortion bill
which said NO ABORTION EVEN IF THE LIFE OF THE MOTHER, RAPE, OR INCEST occur

Of course he was on the take with the keating five and the S&L crisis

He also stated that he would re-introduce the draft a few years ago. He doesn't call it a draft, but two years mandatory service to the country.

8. Thank you so much for posting this.
Wake up DUers....this is who we're fighting against!

I am so sick of all the Clinton did this, Obama did this. Sick of all the bashing. Sick of all the hate.

If *we* continue to do that, we're going to end up with McLame as president and that scares the living crap out of me.

11. You are probably right...
and it does scare me.

we need to strike first and just keep hitting it--the way they did in '04...use small words so the repubs can understand....(remember "flip-flopper") God--that still makes me angry.

12. I know that this will draw some ire but I have to say it.
I read these kinds of lists and most of it is like "blah blah blah 8 homes blah blah". The real truth is that McCain is completely fucking nuts. He is literally completely unhinged, whacko, fucked in the head. I have some sympathy for it because five years of torture would make any person nuts but he is completely crazy and has absolutely no fucking business being close to the button. He has no control over his temper.

Sorry if this offends and I am not saying this as a put down to the OP who posted the list. But number 7 is the most relevant item and it is getting NO FUCKING ATTENTION by the media. And it scares the shit out of me.

My brother worked on the Hill for years and used to tell me horror stories about McCain.

14. If you listen to Ed Schultz...
#7 has become his "cause" he has promised to talk about it on every talking head show he is invited to in the future. He talked about it on Fox and CNN last week, questioning his sanity.

I also heard an interview w/Obama and Ed asked him if he had ever witnesses his "anger" and Obama said "Yes....I don't think there is a member of the senate who hasn't seen his temper"

This story definitely needs to come out-- and soon!

agreed.
