each of those kids should have a full size print of those shots stored for their adulthood. It's certainly impossible to plumb the true depth of the human ability to go wrong, but the chances of the little boy in the last shot growing up with a negative perspective on black people seems likely to have been lessened by this contact. Likewise, the black kids (three young men and a little girl) posted further down the thread are probably going to remember having met the senator. If he becomes president they'll carry it with them for a long time.

Some people who should know better - hard-bitten, not-so-young cynics, even - are gushing about Barack, raving about his "game-changing" politics, about his "power to inspire," about how they wept while viewing the now-famous Dipdive video, and on and on.

Excuse me, but this sounds more like a cult than a political campaign. The language used here is the language of evangelical Christianity - the Obama volunteers speak of "coming to Obama" in the same way born-again Christians talk about "coming to Jesus."

But he's not Jesus! He's not going to magically enable us to transcend the bitter partisanship that is tearing this country apart. And even if he is elected, in no way will that show that somehow we have "gotten beyond" race.

If obama gets the nomination and G-d help us all if he is elected, but I see this as another Bush scenario; where obama is going to be hand-picked by the whore medaia and held up as the Messiah in order to see that he is president.

I find Obama's ascendancy to be uncomfortably like Bush's, though you'd never get an Obama supporter to admit it. If they did, they'd be proving me wrong. Bush clinched his Party's nomination without having the kind of experience it takes to shape a person to be a good US President and world leader. The same holds true for Obama. People often equated Bush's run for the White House as an endeavor sanctioned by God, as if God wanted him to be our President to do God's work. I see the same scary dynamic with Obama and his supporters. As Bush got closer to the presidency, and after he took office, people increasingly would ignore any facts that worked against him and exaggerated anything remotely positive. In a word, they just got stupid about the man. I'm afraid I see the same thing happening with many of Obama's supporters. And perhaps most disturbing of all, with Bush, particularly after 9/11, criticism of the man was seen as unpatriotic, with his supporters often calling his detractors unAmerican or unpatriotic. Now we see a dynamic where Obama supporters will not hesitate to call those critical of Obama racist. I guess I'm just an unpatriotic racist.
