Clinton: “I started criticizing the war in Iraq before he did"

Obama has been credited with foreseeing a troublesome war in Iraq primarily due to a speech he gave in 2002 while he was a state senator, where he spoke out against the war. Clinton said, “I started criticizing the war in Iraq before he did. So, I’m well aware that his entire campaign is premised on a speech he gave in 2002 and I give him credit for making that speech. But that was not a decision.”

It's like she and Penelope share the same sick, sad compulsion.

It's actually quite fascinating to watch.

Not good for the party, but fascinating in some kind of sick train wreck manner. You want to look away but just can't.

I remember (and am still embarrassed by) a similar stunt at one-upmanship I pulled during Show and Tell in kindergarten. It was so unbelievably embarrassing that I promised myself I would never do it again. Besides, I don't have the memory one needs to be any good at it.

38. Here is a direct quote:

Bill Clinton Says He Opposed Iraq War From the Outset

Former president Bill Clinton said on Tuesday that he "opposed Iraq from the beginning," apparently glossing over the more nuanced views of the war he has expressed over time. Clinton made the remarks while campaigning for his wife in Iowa - a largely anti-war state for Democrats -- as he expressed bitterness over getting a tax cut with money that could have been spent on the military.

"Even though I approved of Afghanistan and opposed Iraq from the beginning, I still resent that I was not asked or given the opportunity to support those soldiers," Clinton said. He said he "should not have gotten" the tax cuts he received as a wealthy earner.

I also found this when I googled for the quote above:

Clinton defends successor's push for war
Says Bush 'couldn't responsibly ignore' chance Iraq had WMDs

Wednesday, June 23, 2004

Former President Clinton has revealed that he continues to support President Bush’s decision to go to war in Iraq but chastised the administration over the abuses at Abu Ghraib prison.

“I have repeatedly defended President Bush against the left on Iraq, even though I think he should have waited until the U.N. inspections were over,” Clinton said in a Time magazine interview that will hit newsstands Monday, a day before the publication of his book “My Life.”

Clinton, who was interviewed Thursday, said he did not believe that Bush went to war in Iraq over oil or for imperialist reasons but out of a genuine belief that large quantities of weapons of mass destruction remained unaccounted for.

Noting that Bush had to be "reeling" in the wake of the attacks of September 11, 2001, Clinton said Bush's first priority was to keep al Qaeda and other terrorist networks from obtaining "chemical and biological weapons or small amounts of fissile material."

"That's why I supported the Iraq thing. There was a lot of stuff unaccounted for," Clinton said in reference to Iraq and the fact that U.N. weapons inspectors left the country in 1998.

8. Didn't she say that he vote was not to authorize war?
How could she criticize a war if she honestly believed that she wasn't authorizing it? If she believed that there was going to be a war, then how could she justify her vote, since she claimed that she was misled, and that she was only voting for continued inspections?

Hillary is now admitting that she knew that the IWR was a vote to go to war.

17. I wasn't misled. I knew that vote was for war, and so did all of us.
I find it incredibly irritating that these politicians think they can get away with playing stupid. At least Kerry gave that speech before his vote. Hillary's term as a senator was simply a prop for her run for President as a centrist. She voted for the war because she didn't want to make any controversial votes in the Senate that could ruin her Presidential run.

Hillary said :" I didn’t make a speech"

October 10, 2002
Floor Speech of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton
on S.J. Res. 45, A Resolution to Authorize the Use of
United States Armed Forces Against Iraq

As Delivered

"Today we are asked whether to give the President of the United States authority to use force in Iraq should diplomatic efforts fail to dismantle Saddam Hussein's chemical and biological weapons and his nuclear program.

I am honored to represent nearly 19 million New Yorkers, a thoughtful democracy of voices and opinions who make themselves heard on the great issues of our day especially this one. Many have contacted my office about this resolution, both in support of and in opposition to it, and I am grateful to all who have expressed an opinion.

"If we get the resolution and Saddam does not comply, then we can attack him with far more support and legitimacy than we would have otherwise."

"This is a very difficult vote. This is probably the hardest decision I have ever had to make -- any vote that may lead to war should be hard -- but I cast it with conviction."

More of the Speech which 'wasn't a speech" but an official "speech" given before Congress.
