I have a compliment for the Obama campaign. |
|
I have never watched a person do a more brilliant job of "controlling the message" than David Axelrod. He puts Atwater, Rove, and Carville to shame. A campaign cannot be successful without strong control of the messages that flow into and out of our media, and daily I can see the results of his hard work.

The public's (hence the media's) attention are on the Democrats at the moment. When the game changes for the General Election, Obama's/Clinton's and McCain's campaigns will quickly wrestle for control of the message. The scenario in that post is very likely.

If you ask me the Clinton campaign seems to be doing well self-destructing on its own without any help from Axelrod. Both myself and Ms Browl have had our share of 'she did NOT just say that' moments while watching La Clinton on TV, without any help from the media messengers whatsoever. As a one-time journo myself, I generally research things I am curious about via the net rather than waiting around to read what Axelrod or Penn said on a conference call.

4. Let me ask you a question: What are your perceptions about Obama and Clinton at the moment? |

And how did you come to those conclusions? The media are not "cinema verite," as you know.

Axelrod's handling of the Wright affair - with the 3-hour roll of cable news TV appearances - was genius, pure and simple.

5. As an avid fan of Tudor history |

I've said this many times before, but I'm oft reminded of Queen Elizabeth the first. She was largely made by her mostly wise counsel
Mary, Queen of Scots was taken down by surrounding herself by duplicitous, power mongering, and manipulative people.
It cost her head.
Ickes, Penn, and Wolfson seem to be of that ilk.
Just saying.

6. This is a compliment on Axelrod's skill set, not a reference to whatever personal affectations... |

He's surrounded himself by phenomenal people, Power included.
Even Wright has his point to make.
Let them all speak.

10. I first saw Axelrod on TV the other day and at first I didn't realize he wasn't a TV reporter. |

He has the ability to talk as though he's reporting the actual events rather than being asked what his position is.

I bet David doesn't get paid what Mark does, for Mark's useless advice.

15. If he wins the White House for Obama, he will get paid. |

Look at how much dough Carville and Begala raked in after Clinton won in '92.

14. I actually agree with you. |
|
I've said before that Axelrod and his team must have studied the Carville/Begala 'War Room' of 1992 and actually improved upon the model.
The prime example of this was Obama's full-court press in response to the Wright issue. They, in very specific order:
1. Released a statement to Huffington Post, which went viral across the internet in about 15 minutes. 2. Appeared on MSNBC at 8:00 3. Appeared on Fox at 9:00. 4. Appeared on CNN at 10:00.
All of this on a Friday afternoon/evening, which allowed them to be in absolute control of the weekend news cycle and dictate what the Sunday talking head shows would cover.
Few people seem to realize it, but that was one of the most masterful uses of the media in the past 20 years.
Axelrod and his team were a large part of my switching to Obama afer Edwards dropped out, because I'm of the opinion that you can tell a lot about how a candidate will run the general election campaign by how they run their primary.
Obama's team won that battle, hands down.
