Sweetie-Gate at DU
I hear there is a thread on DU filled with complaints about Barack Obama calling one of his supporters "sweetie".
I must have that person on ignore, if there really is a thread like that.

Here is my thoughts:

This is beyond the pale. This stuff makes me so angry as a woman. We have worked hard over the years to overcome sexism of REAL magnitude. Someone wants to feign outrage over someone calling a woman sweetie??? Good grief, this is like crying wolf. All this stuff needs to stop, because these people are ruining it for women who DO have real sexism claims. If we cry sexism at every turn, eventually we will fall on deaf ears. I am pissed. This campaign will set women back years. Maybe my daughter will want to run for President one day, who the hell knows? Now thanks to all this, I imagine it will be years and years, before a woman gets the opportunity.

You all do Hillary no favors doing this crap. You may think you are, but you are hurting her. Hillary thanks you sincerely for making a mockery of her being a woman, by feigning faux outrage sexism claims. She has had real sexist remarks made about her, but crying wolf, just like the little boy in the story, will help these claims not be taken seriously.

Thanks for setting women back decades.

1. By the standards Hillary is held to this story should lead off the nightly news for a week.
By human standards it shouldn't be the end of the world.

I have much bigger problems with Obama then this. Like the fact that he is mean and spiteful.

Steve

11. It’s part of their manufactured reality to deal with losing. Just like that DUer on a recently
locked thread htinking we all hate women, including Obama's women supporters.

Try asking him to give you an example. He won’t respond.

17. It was no "wonderful person"
who stabbed John Kerry in the back by deliberately legitimizing the right-wing smear against him over his mis-speak in October 2006.

There was no respect in that act, just petty meanness.

Hillary has treated Obama similarly, with for example, the remark that McCain is qualified to be president and Obama is "only a speech".

If you really think Hillary is a "wonderful person" who is all sweetness and light and always respectful to her political opponents, I have a bridge to sell you.

*** That said, McCain is FAR, FAR, WORSE. ***

Sorry, but until there are numerous reports of him going around telling superdelegates she's unelectable because she's a woman, I'm going to say your statement is bullshit.

23. If you look at the transcripts and quotes from his speeches or interviews
he has been nothing but complimentary to Clinton. He has actually bent over backwards (often making me puke) at praising her and her campaign. So IMHO, your comment is b.s.

But this is politics after all.

But certainly he is no saint and way far from mister perfection of holiness or whatever. He is a politician doing what he needs to do to win. It's not always so pretty.

But I truly HATE the way the campaign has morphed into a hate-Hillary fest. Ditto here on DU.

Very unsavory. And very self-destructive.

You hypocrite. You state you will not vote Democratic if Hillary is not the nominee. Supreme court mean anything? How about death and another war? Your little petty animosity towards Obama ("he is mean and spiteful" -- cite a fucking example!) will cause you to aide the Repuglicans in continuing their looting of this country and continuing the death and suffering in Iraq.

"I have much bigger problems with Obama then this" What a crock of shit! You personify spite and meanness, Steve. Get over yourself.

but it sucks.

And for those women (on this thread or elsewhere) who say they enjoy it etc. i am reminded how often we used to hear similar comments about the wolf whistling in the the street level of petty sexual harassment. Fortunately that is now a little more out of fashion these days.

How much we have forgotten.

And if anyone doubts the continuing existence of sexism - spend a few hours in the archives of GD-P. that's just for strters.

Obama folk - none of this makes Hillary the better candidate. You don't have to change your view. But please - open your eyes to the reality. It's sexism and it's there in ALL our lives. Just as racism is in ALL our lives. You can still vote for your candidate but let's try to "evolve" a little whenever we can. And call out sexism when we see it.

22. I don't get it.
I've had women cashiers in the grocery store call me "sweetie." I didn't think I was being sexually harassed.
In some contexts, it's just an endearing term. A little more personal than "Ma'am" or "Miss."
I think some people won't be happy until we all behave like robots.
