Hillary: This 'is not a coronation'

Posted: Sunday, April 06, 2008 11:35 AM by Mark Murray
Filed Under: 2008, Clinton

Clinton concluded, "Elections are about choices, and you are supposed to present your case and you're supposed to critique the other case. That is what you do in an election. It is not a coronation. It is a contest. This country is worth fighting for, and I am going to fight for it. I'd rather you be involved and not for me than to be apathetic and not involved."

5. Yup. Now, begrudgingly, she is willing to argue...
for an "election" - one that MUST count two primaries that DIDN'T count.

6. See, if Obama has the nomination locked up by winning a majority of delegates, that's a coronation.
Edited on Sun Apr-06-08 11:19 AM by grytpype
But if we throw out the popular vote at the convention and give it to Hillary by whatever means necessary, that is not a coronation.

Everybody got that?

1) Anything can happen at the convention,

2) The popular vote is not what counts, it's the delegates,

3) If she doesn't have a majority of elected delegates, they can change their votes from Obama to Hillary,

4) If that doesn't work, the superdelegates can overrule the elected delegates and the popular vote,

5) If that doesn't work, then since she would have won more electoral votes if this were the general election instead of the primary and somehow she and Obama were running against each other, then she sort of won and just give it to her already, and

6) There's always litigation if everything else fails, and if that fails,

7) She runs as McCain's running mate on a national unity ticket.

Therefore nothing is decided until SHE says so.

I made up #6-7 but # 1-5 are actually Hil's official positions! And it's all about democracy mind you!

16. "This country is worth fighting for, and I am going to fight for it."
There's an interesting semantic shift in the middle of that sentence.

"Fighting for" can mean either "fighting to protect" or "fighting to seize."

The first half of Hillary's sentence seems crafted to arouse all the patriotic instincts which will agree automatically that our country is worth fighting to protect.

But in the second half, when she says "I am going to fight for it," she isn't talking about defending the country against enemies. She's talking about fighting to take it for herself as a prize.

She's using the first half of the sentence to make the second half sound like a noble endeavor -- like something that any right-minded person would agree she ought to be doing.

I can't tell whether that's clever speech-writing or just another example of Hillary misinterpreting what's best for the Clintons as what's best for the country. But either way, there's something very disquieting about it.

19. I'm sure she self-rationalizes it by thinking that she is fighting to protect the country.
Obama, despite taking down the wife of an extremely popular ex-president in a nomination process that was supposed to be nominal at best, can't win for some reason which her supporters won't name. By attempting to seize the nomination underhandedly, she is trying to protect us from the foolish mistake of not supporting her.

21. I hope that by May 20 it is a coronation or at least an affirmation
Oregon votes toward the end as usual and, as much as I want my vote to be meaningful, I hope that we will cast our votes in affirmation of the choice the country will already have made, Barcak Obama. Hopefully he will already be well into the contest against Angry John and carrying a lot of primary momentum with him.

24. Coronation???? Obama has overcome IMPOSSIBLE odds to get where he is now!
The GE should still be tough, but perhaps LESS of an uphill fight.

I am worried about EITHER Democrat in the GE -- feeling that media and others will try to turn election into a "referendum" in favor of war. But of course, if it REALLY IS a referendum on the war rather than the garbage I can smell already, then McCain loses bigtime.

Obama has exceeded my expectations, particularly on Super Tuesday and in handling the issues surrounding Pastor Wright. (Yes, the latter still has "legs", even the swiftboat crap did).
