Republican split could lose South Dakota vote for Bush
http://news.independent.co.uk/world/americas/story.jsp?story=527248

02 June 2004

The White House is mounting a big effort to restore unity in Republican ranks, where the massive budget deficit, social issues and divisions over Iraq are undermining President George Bush's prospects of re-election this autumn.

With poll after poll showing Mr Bush's ratings on the slide, the Democrats are hoping the divisions will help them win an important Congressional election yesterday in the Republican plains state of South Dakota.

If they pull it off, it will be further proof of how traditional political behaviour has been reversed. Solid behind their candidate John Kerry, the once fractious Democrats have become the unified party, while the normally disciplined Republicans are splintering along a host of fault lines - above all Iraq.

<snip>

Winning just one chamber on Capitol Hill would break the Republican monopoly of power. Even if Mr Bush did win a second term, a Democratic majority in Senate or House could block much of his agenda.

1. Of all the articles in the UK media, I hope this one is TRUE!
I know lots of us have more confidence in the news and opinions we read in the UK media than we do in that of the US. I sure hope their assessment of our political circumstance is correct!

As I was watching the updates on the SD results last night, I kept thinking how this could easily be the way it goes in November....sitting there watching constant updates on election results until the wee hours of the morning.

It is a good indicator that Steph won though. Even though it was a very close election, it is a Pub state, and this is good reason for us to be very encouraged about the true feeling of the majority of the country's feelings....AND....good reason for Shrub & Rove to lose lots of sleep for a lot of months!

2. I don't see him "winning" another
term, not like he actually won the last one.

3. W couldn't get elected dogcatcher
at this point. It's only the talking heads in the media and the true Bu$hbots who believe otherwise.

The Repugs have been in charge of the WH and Congress for the last 3.5 years and they continue to prove they do not know how to govern. They did the same thing the last time they were in control and that didn't last long either.
