If you're truly offended by Obama's "sweetie" remark - feel free to file a class-action lawsuit
After all, as I saw a poster in another thread point out, he's running for a position of power over all of us. If your boss, or someone who was interviewing to be your boss, called you "sweetie", you'd file a sexual harassment claim, wouldn't you?

Randi Rhodes got fired for using derogatory language during a friggin' comedy routine. Obama used this horribly offensive sexist slur on the campaign trail. BRING HIM DOWN!

16. is that what they said about the actor who played Kramer?
That it was just a comedy routine? Is that what they said about Imus? Why the double standard when it is sexism rather than racism?

20. Are you nuts, comparing the two?
I realize you're one of the few remaining Hillary supporters here on DU, and I respect that, but geez, you really compare Barack using the term "sweetie" to Michael Richards' racist rant?

Get a grip.

I'm on most Hillary supporters' ignore list here, but I do hope you see this and reconsider the comparison, toots. (just kidding!!)

27. I don't put anyone on ignore hear, but you are right on. As an Obama supporter
I also thought Rhodes was out of line to call Hillary a "fuc*n whore". It isn't funny, in her capacity it is unprofessional, and as a business whose listeners also make up Hillary supporters it is way out of line

29. Agreed. That was out of line.
But "sweetie" can't be compared to that.

The finest waitresses in America call me "sweetie," and I appreciate it.

28. So you think when Imus spewed
"Nappy headed 'hos" to the female basketball team of Rutgers, that was somehow not sexist but only racist? I suppose because somehow white woman can be women and black women are some unknown genderless animal? And since white women can't have nappy heads, therefore only black woman are 'hos?

Time for you to stop your bullshit knee jerk posting.

You are quite close to going on my ignore for alot of the nonsense that you have posted but the 2 examples that you cite are from people using the public airways or public venues to attack non-public figures and not tossing off a "sweetie" at them. And certainly in the case of Imus, his gutter mouth had gone for years and years without rebuke until that final incident.. and many many more "shock jocks" continued to follow his lead, prompting more suspensions and firings of those idiots....

One big problem in this country is not so much race or sex but REGIONALISM. There are certain societal "norms" that are in place in the different regions of this country and what might come across as offensive to one region is not considered offensive at all but endearing in the context of the use of the utterance in another area. Many of the blue and pink collars here in Philly use "girls" and "hon" and "sweetie" and "doll" among each other and feel secure in their own womanhood not to be offended by it., even when their own male peers use it with them. The difference being that when the term is used with the motive and power behind it to oppress that person, then it moves towards being sexist.

7. In the midwest and south I get called sweety by men and women routinely
It is cultural. Although the first time a guy at work called me that I wondered if it would be appropriate to go balistic. Then I figured out he didn't mean anything by it - its no different than sir or madam and a hack of a lot friendlier. Now when I go to the coffee shop and am called sweetie or honey by the person handing me my coffee - it feels pretty nice. I think they might be on to something.

And I think part of my Dad's family went to live in Texas. And I have friends in Dallas. I like SOME things about Southern Culture.

25. Oh gee thanks.
We have a new person at work that's half my age and calls me "hon" or "honey" constantly. I haven't said anything but it's been pissing me off. You reminded me it's not meant to be condescending but endearing.

Thanks.

9. It depends on the tone
I don't like being called any of those dismissive cookie names - unless it's loaded with gobs of affection, which I'm guessing Obama's was. Since I don't think I've ever heard it before, I have to figure it was unique to the person and situation involved. Plus he was in Montana yesterday, and might have got mixed up after being around people who genuinely like each other.

10. Evolution of salutations
Once salesclerks said "Can I help you, miss?" and then a few years went by and it was, "Can I help you ma'am?". Now it's become, "Do you need any help, dear?" So...sweetie isn't so bad. At least it's age-neutral.

26. what a riot calling Hillary a "fuc*n whore", I am just rolling on the floor laughing, NOT
In general, Rhodes is an offensive person, constantly interupts her callers unless they agree with her, and always talks over her guests. Malloy is the same way.

Let's have a progressive radio station to insult 50% of those listeners who support Hillary, by calling her candidate a "fuc*n whore"

Rhodes is an extremely unprofessional person

Just watch the way Seder runs his show, he lets all sides have their say

Just as I don't listen to the right wing talk shows insult their guest and callers, and don't enjoy the left wing talk shows that do it either

Obama's remark wasn't sexual harassment
