Obama Gets Blank Space Punishment from Philly; Mr No-show strikes again

http://www.towleroad.com/2008/04/barack-obama-ge.html

"Fed up with the fact that Obama has not done an interview with local gay press in 1,522 days, the Philadelphia Gay News, which yesterday published a long interview with Hillary Clinton, made their point with a big white space in the paper today.

They even let a typo in his name go uncorrected.

The paper's publisher Mark Segal spoke to the Philadelphia Inquirer: "We had great success with the Clinton campaign. They were very open to us and inviting from day one. The surprise to us was the Obama campaign. When we realized we weren’t getting very far with them, we decided to enlist other people — who are supporting Senator Obama — to assist us. These people happen to be some of his superdelegates and his strongest political supporter in the state: Robert Casey and congressman Pat Murphy. All of whom advised him this was an interview he should do. We were told there had been scheduling problems. We’ve been told this now for weeks."

Go to the link for a picture of the front page with a great Hillary article, and a huge blank spot for the Obama

40. This has nothing to do with reaching across the isle.
That happens when one political party tries to work with the other party in Congress. But when it comes to gay people, some are Dems and some are Repukes so it's not a matter of one party versus the other. Ever heard of the Log Cabin Republicans?

48. That's your take on it as a Clinton supporter.
But I would rather let Obama and his campaign make up their own schedule rather than trying to tell them who they should let interview them and who they should not. I'm sure that Obama gets many more requests for interviews than he has time for. After all, there are only 24 hours in a day. But of course there are some people who are scraping the bottom of the barrel to look for any excuse to criticize him.

And he should. However, he might want to give an interview to a paper that has not already endorsed Clinton. That's the way campaigns work.

Face it, he probably won't do it. While he'll certainly be better on LGBT issues than McLame, I think his supporters are once more transferring their beliefs onto him in this area.

132. IMO the vast majority of Obama supporters are strong advocates for
LGBT rights. So if his supporters are "are once more transferring their beliefs onto him in this area," then maybe that's a good thing. And like I already said, I'm sure that he will be granting more interviews. Heck, the campaign has several months to go which should allow him plenty of time to do it.

By not pandering, he does just that - finding the commonalities and not focusing on or highlighting the differences that will become the lightning rods for attack by the RW haters to continue to divide the Democrats. I'm sure my gay first cousin and his partner despise paying $3.39/gallon for gas where they live downtown as much I hate it where I live. He's self-employed and would appreciate small-business tax breaks and would like to see us the hell out of Iraq. He doesn't need an article in that paper to get that articulated.

famous for getting into a local newscast live and making a political statement...I want to say in the late Seventies, but I could be wrong. Shows up at all political events, knows everyone, and lets you know that. Nothing wrong with that I suppose, but you can't cross this guy. He's vindictive and will do what he can to stomp you.

He's the last of the original editors/publishers of the alternative press here to my knowledge. Unfortunately, HIPAA prevents me from other stories here on the Web or anywhere else, for that matter. He's very bright and I would not mess with him politically in terms of local issues.

63. Sorry about that...
I'm a dentist in Center City Philadelphia and hear lots. And lots. HIPAA is the federal act which prohibits us from divulging confidential information which we learn from the patient during visits. This applies ot everything including social history and family history. So there's much I can't say around here - but am somewhat amused at times...if only you knew...but them's the breaks.

What I've learned over the years is that there is a whole subculture of people who know a whole lotta crap that if the general public knew, it'd be outraged, but as a professional you just don't talk. If you do, you get a Rep (as Rocky would say in Rocky (the first one)) and no one ever tells you anything ever.

And in some cases, you can...well, die from telling the wrong people the wrong stuff.

Trust me...

It's that he also enables duplicitous politicians like Rendell who harm the LGBT community. Segal's commitment to LGBT rights--and, to be clear, it's really just gay men he cares about (and, not to put too fine a point on it, middle and upper middle class white gay men--the paper has an ignominious history on lesbian issues and issues dealing with people of color)--begins and ends at the boundaries of his ego.

she must look for as much "free" press as she can muster.

Obama hasn't given any interview with the Philadelphia Tribune either, which is the oldest black newspaper in the country. I'm not seeing the black community here whining. He's got alot of bigger fish to fry and very little time to do it in.

other states are calling him. ;) There are 10 contests left and PA is but one. He has to put his face out there to the people across the land because the Clintons have been a known for the past 16 years and he is still an unknown.

Interestingly enough, he has gotten more kudos for not pandering to groups - and that includes the black community. It has caused alot of hurt feelings in each group he pushes aside because in the grand scheme of things, he is attempting to find what is common among ALL the groups. The GLBT group has its issues as do hispanics and women and racial and religious minorities. But there are things in common that need to be addressed that will help to lessen the infighting between these groups.

133. Wow. Take a chill pill, eh?
What is this crap about "pandering" to bigots? The repeating of this nonsense is tiresome.

To most of us, GLBTs are people. They come in all shapes and sizes and colors and educational and economic backgrounds. And to insist that they must segregate and not be considered part of the norm is truly sad. They are not freaks. My gay cousin and his partner are not freaks and there is no need for candidates to pander for a photo op and bullshit session while having a history of not supporting change in the laws once they are in office. THAT is the legacy of the Clintons.

Obama hasn't attended any specific "women's forums" and was blasted for not attending Tavis Smiley's "State of the Black Union", nor has he attended any special "hispanic forums" or "seniors forums" (e.g. AARP). So why should he suddenly need to attend a GLBT forum?

ALL of these sub groups have commonalities and this is what he is trying to address.

Not a national "democratic party constituency".

You have to weigh your time in a state this large, and an outspoken Hill Shill's local paper wouldn't have been my choice either.

but regardless, Obama should be answering questions from different constituencies. Doesn't matter if this paper is run by a Hillary supporter or not - not all it's readers are Hillary supporters.

I want to hear Obama on these issues. I have about ten questions I'd ask him for starters, and I'd like to hear his answers.

“I refuse to limit my God, to lock God into my cultural understandings because culture is fickle,” Wright said. “And culture is often wrong. Culture was wrong about slavery. Culture was wrong about women. Culture was wrong about Africans and Indians, and culture was wrong about Christ,” he said. “I have been the pariah among many of my clergy colleagues who somehow see me as defective or not quite saved because I won’t join them in their homophobic gay bashing and misquoting of scripture.”

you might have a different take on it. Trust me. Mark Segal, the publisher, is a vile person who pursues an agenda favorable to centrist middle and upper middle class gay men. His coverage of LGBT of color and lesbian issues has been abominable--in a city with a 50% black population. His view of activists has been even worse. He HATED ACT-UP and Queer Nation while he worked overtime to ingratiate himself to Rendell (then mayor of Philadelphia); his distaste for the activist community continues to this day.

I just find it odd that this would get so much coverage. I am not against the gays. In fact I am a native American with a rather large population in my region. I couldnt imagine getting all bent out of shape just because he wouldnt stop by to speak with us. Though maybe we should push the candidates to.

Has he done this in every other city? If he has, but has not so with Philly I guess this could be a reason for concern.

Obama goes to one of the few christian churches that encourage gays to attend. At this point I'm sure he is just calculating the best way to spend his time to reach out to the most people possible.

But he needs to get it out there to the people most concerned with GLBT issues -the GLBT community. He needs to speak with the papers, the radio hosts, the conventions, whatever suits the occasion, in order to include the GLBT community in his campaign.

He needs to talk to them rather than just talk about them.

He has divided his time speaking on gay rights and his positions on the issue between the gay community and the general public. It is MUCH MORE important that he tell people why homophobia and legalized second-class citizenship is wrong.

Why does he need to tell us what we already know?

Edited on Sun Apr-06-08 07:03 PM by zulchzulu
http://journals.democraticunderground.com/zulchzulu/140

If people want to wonder why there have been so many anti-gay resolutions in various elections, look no further than to the Clintons, who gave the Religious Reich the best homophobic gift they could ever bestow, the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

How anyone who is gay could support the Clintons is beyond comprehension. They sure can be slick with rhetoric, but when it comes to legislation, they side with the Pat Robertsons of the World. DOMA has been the oxygen of homophobic hatred and Bill Clinton gladly signed it and Hillary Clinton TO THIS DAY supports it.

I'm sure the 1,522 days since Obama has interviewed with a local gay paper was pulled out this OP's ass. That would mean Obama hasn't interviewed anyone since Thursday, February 5, 2004.

WRONG!

Here's a link to October, 2007:
http://adhc.wordpress.com/2007/10/24/obama-in-exclusive-interview-with-black-gay-magazine/
