Campaign Underground Status Report (WE NEED HELP!)
Edited on Fri Jun-11-04 11:36 AM by Skinner
Please read this entire post closely before you respond!

I'm sorry about the false start last week. Now I've actually got time to focus on finishing Campaign Underground, but I'm going to need lots of help.

I had no idea this was going to be so difficult to coordinate. Please forgive my previous lack of organization. Hopefully this will get us back on track.

HOW YOU CAN HELP OUT

There is a lot of data to fill in, and a lot of people who want to help. To ensure that this gets done, we need to do this in a relatively structured manner. You can volunteer for as many states as you like, and each state can have more than one volunteer. If you want to volunteer to help, please follow these instructions closely.

1. Look at the list below to select which state(s) you want to help with.

2. Go to Campaign Underground http://www.democraticunderground.com/cu and double-check the state to see what work needs to be done.

3. Post in this thread to indicate that you want to help. (Do not email me or send me a private message. I want to keep all the info in one place.) PLEASE INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION:

- Which state you want to help with.
- Which data you are going to collect.

4. I will update the list below to indicate who is working on each state. I will then send you a private message with instructions and passwords necessary to access the database and edit that state.

5. When you are finished collecting and entering data, post again in this thread to let me know that you have completed your task. I will then update the list above.

COORDINATING YOUR WORK

If you wish to coordinate work with other people, you can use the state forums for that purpose. Wherever possible, you should contain the discussion of each state to a single thread to avoid confusion. There are already threads open in some of the forums to discuss Campaign Underground. IF THERE IS A CU THREAD OPEN IN ANY STATE FORUM, OR IF YOU OPEN SUCH A THREAD, PLEASE POST THE LINK HERE. I will add the link to the status sheet below.

THE STATUS OF EACH STATE

I received a comprehensive CU status report from DU member soup last week. I have coded each of the states so you can easily see its status:

1. Maryland
I've collected all the data EXCEPT the media data. None of it has been posted yet though.

So if someone wants to collect information on Maryland's media outlets, that still needs doing.

2. I can work on Utah
I can work on Utah if no one else has started collecting information on it. If they have and just need help entering data, I would be happy to help with that too. I can start working on it tonight.

I was going to volunteer for Nevada too, but I see that a lot of information has been collecting and posted in the Nevada forum. I could also input that data if you need me too.

California is looking pretty good. I asked for help in my state forum on proofing it, and so far no problems.

4. Skinner/Elad - Please Read.
I posted a message in the open thread a few weeks ago about CU. On Colorado's US House homepage, it shows 5D and 2R. The numbers should be the other way around. If you scroll down on that page, it lists the 5 republicans and 2 democratic house members. If you could change that, it would be great. Thanks :)

17. not sure if this is the right place to post this, but...
it says that Murray was first elected to the Senate in 1988. That's not true, she was first elected in 1992 (the seat that Cantwell currently holds was up in 1988, won by Slade Gorton).

You're right; Murray was elected to the State Senate in 1988, and then to the US Senate in 1992.

8. okay I'm a cyber ninnie. . .
Don't know where else I should post. In R.I., it's my understanding that Congressman Kennedy faces the same challenger that he was last up against. Doubt he stands a chance even though Kennedy has not exactly been exemplary of late. Senator Chafee ( our fave Repug ) is not up for re-election yet. Not sure about Reed, who's been doing great on the armed services committee lately. Not sure about Congressman Langevin either. Will post again as soon as I can verify.

As far as media outlets, don't know what you have as yet, but be sure to check out the Providence Phoenix. It's the only alternative newspaper here. Be sure to review "Philippe and Jorge's Cool Cool World" (political satire) and anything by Dan Kennedy.

Edited on Sun Jun-06-04 01:31 PM by suegeo
I didn't get everything collected.

I am missing:

1) Senator information. I have the names, but I don't have the stuff like how long they've been in the office, what percentage of the vote they won by.

2) Local primary date

3) % of vote totals for president, 2000--the total votes cast are there, so only the math needs to be done to figure out percentages

4) Governor: how long in office, in office until information is missing

5) email addresses for most of the media outlets

If Tellurian wants to find this info., and input it into the database, go for it!

47. The stuff I posted above is missing/incorrectly input
I guessed on the governor "in office until" information.

Maybe the reason that some of the information is filled in is that the database puts in default info if you don't enter anything (e.g. dates for senators).

yes chuck schumer is running for reelection in 2004 (sen clinton is up in 2006)
in fact the conservative party just nominated a woman from long island who is far right wing. (no abortions under any circumstances, getting rid of the brady law) she ran for congress against Represenative McCarthy and got her ass kicked.

we need to get the admins to change the NY info. must make sure chuck gets re-elected.

Edited on Fri Jun-04-04 04:31 PM by boloboffin
As far as the races, yes.

But the media contacts could be expanded greatly. In Nashville, we don't have information for the Nashville Scene, a big "alt" weekly that's definitely worth including in the database. There are a couple of gay papers too that are distributed around town, and worth the contact info.

Is this a volunteer from me? Well, I'd be a controversial choice in a couple of ways, but I'd be willing to help.

41. Nebraska, Mississippi, Wyoming
I researched some of the states last Saturday (May 29). I collected a bunch of information for the states noted above.

This information is gathered in the forum for the state. It just needs to be input.

I can input the information for any of these states, I just need the log in information.

48. Hi Skinner
Most of Utah is finished. Since their primary isn't until the 22nd I have listed a couple of "pendings" in the gov and house races. I will update those after the primary.

I will post the link over at the Utah forum and ask for help proofing the data I put in.

Is anyone working on the overseas vote? Absentees ballots of Americans living in Europe or other countries? I'd help with that, but I have no idea how to start or who to talk to.

62. NY: 19 media outlets posted, working on house races but...
They are not showing up on the page after I put in the data, although they are there on the "view all state data" in the admin center. So I emailed elad. I don't know what the problem is.

65. Skinner, two questions?
Edited on Tue Jun-15-04 02:29 AM by incapsulated
For NY, I've done the Senate and 15 house races so far (plus 19 media outlets and all the congress members). I'm confused about telephone numbers, especially for congress, people seem to be listing local numbers rather than the rep's DC number so that's what I've been doing. Unfortunately, they often have several offices and many numbers and I have to guess which one would be appropriate to list based on their district. This is sometimes an issue with office addreses as well. Plus, they will often have seperate numbers/addresses for their actual campaign, and I don't know if you prefer that I list that, instead. Can you give me some direction on this?

Also, as far as campaign websites for congress people go, a lot of them have a domain name listed but the site is "under construction", aka, nada. So I just put in their congressional website, which is always up. Is this ok?

73. My NY representative is mistakenly listed as a Democrat
John Sweeney, New York, District 20, is definitely a Republican, as are most who run in my area. He is socially progressive, but still Republican. The fact that it is also listed that 73% voted Republican in the last election is a definite tip-off.
