Spike Lee: The Clintons, man, they would lie on a stack of Bibles
Does this mean you’re down on the Clintons?

The Clintons, man, they would lie on a stack of Bibles. Snipers? That’s not misspeaking; that’s some pure bulls***. I voted for Clinton twice, but that’s over with. These old black politicians say, “Ooh, Massuh Clinton was good to us, massuh hired a lot of us, massuh was good!” Hoo! Charlie Rangel, David Dinkins—they have to understand this is a new day. People ain’t feelin’ that stuff. It’s like a tide, and the people who get in the way are just gonna get swept out into the ocean.

What do you think of Obama?
I’m riding my man Obama. I think he’s a visionary. Actually, Barack told me the first date he took Michelle to was Do the Right Thing. I said, “Thank God I made it. Otherwise you would have taken her to Soul Man. Michelle would have been like, ‘What’s wrong with this brother?’ ”

Does this mean you’re down on the Clintons?

Lovely.

These old black politicians say, “Ooh, Massuh Clinton was good to us, massuh hired a lot of us, massuh was good!” Hoo! Charlie Rangel, David Dinkins—they have to understand this is a new day.

He's saying that the AA community owes nothing to the Clintons, and that those politicians saying they do (Rangel, Dinkins) are wrong. It's crystal clear.

126. Remember Clinton's 20 point lead in SC?
Right up to that primary, she believed she had the AA community in her pocket. It was only after the poll numbers started to go south in the two weeks before SC that she started to realize it was a fantasy, and that was when Bill first started his 'just the black candidate' talk. Which REALLY shut her down.

I almost think that Bill doesn't want her to win, in his heart of hearts.

Btw, about that ignore thing - feel free. Ignore anyone who dares to think or ask a question or state an opinion that is not in lockstep with yours. Create your echo chamber, your fantasy world where only what you want to see and here is all there is. Why not just by a grand mirror, plop your condescending ass down in front of it, and have the conversation of your life?

Really, who gives a fuck if YOU have them on ignore? Who the fuck are you that it would matter, at all?

49. There was a very strong editorial written about him
Taking him to task for minimizing Obama's support by say that people were just voting out pride. The paper said that his response to the editorial was, "Well written".

People were also annoyed with him with the way he tried to intercede in the race squabble during South Carolina. It was off base and not needed.

When he first endorsed Clinton he said he was doing it because she was from his state.

Accusations that black presidential candidates only have support because they're black, he's the "affirmative action" candidate:

"If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position."

She said the same thing about Jesse Jackson twenty years ago.

Race-baiting accusations that Obama is an anti-white racists who hates white people:

"I really think they're attacking me because I'm white. How's that?"

64. I don't believe they are racist, but are playing to those who are...
...I would be very surprised if either of the Clintons was a racist. But they have used race as a divisive issue, and are using it in a way to appeal to white racists. They are also demonizing and diminishing blacks who vote for Obama by saying the only reason they voted for him was because Obama is black.

A person with honor, integrity and ethics, and truly believed that all people should be considered equal and have equal opportunities would not, IMO, do this. The Clintons do it, and they have done it repeatedly.

So, while the Clintons themselves are probably not racists, they will use racism to get what they want.

To tell you the truth, IMO, that makes them worse than racists.

At least racists truly believe in the concept. So, while the racism concept is heinous, at least racists truly believe it is a valid concept, and their racist actions and words come from a place of personal integrity: they are being true to what they believe, even if we don't agree with what they believe.

The Clintons don't believe in the concept of racism, but they are willing to seek political and financial gain from those who do. That, IMO, borders on evil, and is completely lacking of honor and integrity.

58. Ah yes, I got the memo
Edited on Mon Apr-07-08 03:04 PM by DemGa
Sen. Barack Obama's presidential campaign has prepared a detailed memo listing various instances in which it perceived Sen. Hillary Clinton's campaign to have deliberately played the race card in the Democratic primary.

The memo, which was obtained by the Huffington Post and has been made public elsewhere, is believed to have been given to an activist and contains mostly excerpts from different media reports. It lists the contact info and name of Obama's South Carolina press secretary, Amaya Smith, and is broken down into five incidents in which either Clinton, her husband Bill, or campaign surrogates made comments that could be interpreted as racially insensitive.

The document provides an indication that, in private, the Obama campaign is seeking to capitalize on the view - and push the narrative - that the Clintons are using race-related issues for political leverage. In public, the Obama campaign has denied that they are trying to propagate such a perception, noting that the document never was sent to the press.

The Obama campaign made a memo summarizing and detailing the Clinton campaign's racist gaffes.

How uppity.

IOW, they were NOT making shit up. The statements by the Clinton campaign were out there, for anybody to see.

And we saw them. Most of us saw them before this 'infamous' memo ever came out.

They didn't need to send it to the press - it CAME from the press. What it was, it was trying to develop a strategy to counter such attacks.

28. Spike Lee - blech
I had the supreme un-pleasure of seeing Mr. Lee at a basketball game. Knicks vs Bulls - a playoff game in Chicago. He's a big Knick fan as my friend and I are. All three of us traveled to Chicago to support our team in enemy territory. Our seats were next to eachother in the second row and my friend an I tried to just say hello - we're New Yorkers who don't get star struck - we were just looking for a hello and an acknowledgment that we were all there supporting our team. He wouldn't even look at us. I've also heard stories about him on movie sets but as I was not witness to those, I will not repeat them. Mr. Lee is an asshole.

83. Oh yeah, because how dare any African-American not endorse
the great Black Hope?????

How insulting to black people to expect that everyone of them should support Obama because of his race!!!

After having conversations with two economists I'm more convinced than ever that Hillary is the best person for the job. One happens to be my much older brother who has 2 PhDs in economics and is an economist in France and Spain. He has written several books and has a Sat. morning radio show in Spain. Another one is the husband of a friend of mine. He's a top economist here in the US and is seen on TV and heard on the radio quite often because he gives assessments on the economic plans of nations. He always has some president angry at him.

My brother is very liberal and my friend's husband very conservative, but they both agree on one issue: they both think that Hillary has the best economic plan of the three remaining candidates.

Therefore, at this point I couldn't care less if Hillary were a man, she's the best person for the job. Unfortunately, we are about to throw her to the curve for either an inexperienced younger man or an older man with no real economic plan.

Qualifications for the job should be more important than race or gender.

"Massuh Clinton"? What racist bullshit. He's saying anyone who supports Clinton is automatically an Uncle Tom. At the heart of this notion is the belief that African Americans aren't free to think for themselves.

Spike Lee is a great filmmaker. But like many artists, he can't handle success without turning into a dick. The much younger man who made Do the Right Thing illustrated how the black community is made up of a diversity of people and interests and viewpoints. The older millionaire movie moghul who shares that younger filmmaker's name and body has gotten sloppy and self satisfied.

I guess a few jellyfish always wash in with the tide.

I only request that we not have a shallow argument. My points are these...

1. I said his comment was racist, not that he himself was. Before you say that's illogical, consider how you can tell someone they've come up with a stupid idea without ever saying that they themselves are stupid.

2. Spike Lee dismisses, in a sweeping generality, all black leaders' support for Clinton as coming from a plantation mentality. I don't know how else one can interpret “Ooh, Massuh Clinton was good to us, massuh hired a lot of us, massuh was good!” I've watched Charlie Rangel for years. Altho I'm an Obama supporter, I could never be so idiotic as to conclude that Rangel is anyone's "house slave". He's a mensch. Because I respect his leadership, I respect his difference from me. Spike Lee, apparently, can't.

3. Because Spike Lee disagrees from Charlie Rangel over who we should nominate, he calls Charlie Rangel a Tom. He faux-mimics him (for it is not real ridicule when it misses the target) saying "Massuh Clinton hired a lot of us." The only basis for this characterization is the fact that Rangel is black. Ipso facto, this is racism.

4. Behind this characterization, too, seems to be the assumption that Rangel, Dinkins, et al, should support my candidate, Barack Obama, because they are black and Obama is black. Again, this is racist on two levels: first, that race should be the principal selection factor in voting and, second, that as black men Rangel and the other "old guard" African American leadership lack either the free will or the intellectual dexterity to think outside of racial lines. This is, of course, categorically racist. Yet here I am, a white man supporting a black candidate, while a great Democratic leader who is black is supporting a white candidate. By a simple extension of Spike Lee's calculus, we're both race traitors. But of course Spike Lee's logic, applied to any democratic election, is utter madness.

5. Ergo, Spike Lee is a twit.

6. For the record, Clinton never hired Rangel. Clinton forged a strategic alliance with Rangel, respecting him as a political equal. Together they were part of a Democratic coalition that gave us the wildly successful 1990s--a decade during which many of the gaps in achievement between white and black America began to be narrowed. Not surprisingly, Rangel would like to reassemble that coalition.

Like Spike Lee, I prefer to ride a new wave, to assemble a new coalition behind Obama, one which improves on the excellent work done in the past by the Clintons. Obama is the future while the Clintons are the past. But they are not as much a part of the past as hurling insulting racial stereotypes at black men whenever you disagree with them.

LOL, wut?

"2. Spike Lee dismisses, in a sweeping generality, all black leaders' support for Clinton as coming from a plantation mentality. If Spike Lee said the same thing about, say, black voters who supported a notably racist politician like, say, Strom Thurmond, would Lee still be a racist then?

"3. I don't think Lee actually called anybody an Uncle Tom. I don't think anybody would call anybody else an Uncle Tom for agreeing with him. Anybody who is an Uncle Tom is ipso facto black. Just like WASPs are ipso facto white. You've put the cart in front of the horse.

"4. Behind this characterization, too, seems to be the assumption that Rangel, Dinkins, et al, should support my candidate, Barack Obama, because they are black and Obama is black. When you assume, you make an ass out of u. I don't see Lee supporting Obama here as much at it is a criticism of the Clintons. I suspect he's make an issue of Clinton's race-baiting campaign regardless of who her opponent was.

"5. Ergo, Spike Lee is a twit."

Are you sure you don't mean he's making twitish remarks?

LOL, wut?

I think you overlooked my opening comment: "I only request that we not have a shallow argument." For the record, "LOL, wut?" is the essense of shallow.

If Spike Lee said the same thing about, say, black voters who supported a notably racist politician like, say, Strom Thurmond, would Lee still be a racist then?

That, Goddamn you, is an excellent argument. Still, I err on the side of caution. I don't see how you can go about ridiculing black people as slaves because you disagree with their political judgment and not be making a racist statement.
Nit: I didn't call Lee a racist. Goddammit.

I don't think Lee actually called anybody an Uncle Tom.

The quote was: "Ooh, Massuh Clinton was good to us, massuh hired a lot of us, massuh was good!" Yes, he was absolutely calling black Clinton supporters Uncle Toms.

I don't see Lee supporting Obama here as much at it is a criticism of the Clintons. I suspect he's make an issue of Clinton's race-baiting campaign regardless of who her opponent was.

Spike Lee Supports Barack Obama. According to this source, he used to support Clinton. Then, when he heard Obama was a fan of his films, he switched to Obama. Not too deep, there. If only Chris Dodd had owned up to renting "School Daze" from Netflix, he might be on his way to the White House by now. Of course this only feeds into my "rich Hollywood twit" thesis.

The "lying on a stack of Bibles" quote was specifically referencing the fake airport-sniper-in-Yugoslavia baloney from Sen. Clinton. This, of course, came to light long after the race baiting that Bill Clinton did in February. I don't cut Clinton any slack for telling that sniper story on the stump. I don't cut her any slack for feeding the beast of racial prejudice in pursuit of her career. But I don't Spike any slack for using racially denegrating language, either. I call 'em how I see 'em. Spike Lee is a twit.

Are you sure you don't mean he's making twitish remarks?

Goddammit! ;)
