They have a Presidential candidate who embodies that very description. Their President is about as popular as a case of the clap. Right now, only 27 percent of people in this country identify themselves as Republican. The economy is in the tank, the country is at war, and they only propose more of the same. Just like in 2006, the GOP is ripe for a beating, maybe even an even bigger one.
You know, E.J. Dionne wrote in a column the other day that for three years, from 1963 to 1968, Liberals had were triumphant in all the elections. And in that time, a brief three year period, he writes about Liberals:
"what they did changed the world. Civil rights and voting rights, Medicare and Medicaid, clean air and clean water legislation, Head Start, the Job Corps and federal aid to schools had their roots in the liberal wave that began to ebb when Lyndon Johnson's Democrats suffered broad losses in the 1966 voting."
We are at a watershed period in history, my friends. (no hidden McCain meaning by that)
Why?
Because look at all of those accomplishments. In just a three year period! And the thing is, Republicans hate those programs. Hell, they still hate the New Deal. Movement Conservatism's basis is to undo the New Deal and the Great Society. They want to destroy, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, anything to do with government and rape and pillage our environment.
We know what they stand for. They want to undo all of those accomplishments. They want more war. They want more riches for corporations and their country club buddies. They want to divide our country based on racial and economic lines. They want to treat women like second-class citizens. They want to discriminate and exploit hatred for LGBT Americans.
We don't. We want progress. We want to move this country in a better direction. Make the world a better place.
But right now we fight each other. And I don't think it's all bad, however, I hate seeing people threaten to stay home or to vote for another candidate if their candidate loses the nomination. Because the welfare of the American people and the challenges that lie ahead are much bigger than either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama. It's not about one person, it's about all of us. It's about our country. The whole world. And the world that future generations will live in.
If we get on the same page when it counts, we can change the world. THIS YEAR. We can do it. Not ten years from now, but NOW. If we go into this next year with an increased margin in the House, a filibuster proof majority in the Senate, plus one of our great Democratic candidates in the White House, the sky is the limit. Generations of people will remember what the Democratic Party did for the American people. After our darkest hour, 8 years of hell, we stepped up to the plate and made the world believe again.
But first we all have to believe.
Well, I believe. With all my heart.
Do you?
