For falling for the MSM's bullshit tactics.

http://blog.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/04/07/clinton_told_true_tale_of_woe.html

The aunt of a young pregnant woman who died after a hospital told her she needed to pay $100 up front for care said in an interview on Monday that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton has been telling the story accurately on the campaign trail -- following claims by a different Ohio hospital that it did not turn the patient away.

For weeks, Clinton repeated an anecdote she heard in Ohio on Feb. 28 involving a young woman who lost her baby and later died because she lacked health insurance and did not have $100 to gain access to a nearby hospital.

But over the weekend, Clinton came under fire when officials at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital, after reading about her remarks, demanded that she stop recounting it because the patient, Trina Bechtel, was admitted there and did have insurance.

39. about 9 to 1 from your side
and they're more outrageous, more blatant, more mean.

If someone believes Obama is a homophobe, that might be stretching it, but there IS evidence that he's less-than-comfortable with gay people, or at least willing to slight them when needed.

But there's another thread here with >100 responses claiming that the Clintons spent $94,000 on cleaning their office. A blatant lie. Just totally, 100% a lie. People here have repeatedly posted that Bill Clinton went on Rush Limbaugh's show - another 100% blatant lie. Those are but two very small examples of what goes on here day in and day out.

I never thought I would see so many DUers become freepers right before my very eyes.

59. I never thought I'd see GAY DU'ers defending DADT and DOMA, either.
But damned if I haven't seen it from the Hillary camp.

Or playing the Rezko card (basically the Whitewater fishing expedition sequel) on a daily basis.

Or making blaming Obama for Bill's snide little Jesse Jackson remark (hmmm...so why did he pick Jesse Jackson? Could the common factor have been that they are both male?).

Or making excuses for outright fabrication of the Bosnia story that damaged Clinton's credibility.

Or Hillary's dirty little NAFTA lie (I was always against it! :eye: )

Or Hillary hiring an anti-union bastard as an adviser to her campaign while trying to pretend to be the worker's candidate.

Or the idiocy that was "sweetie gate".

Or the whole "He's responsible for every word Reverend Wright ever said" nonsense.

Or defending CarVILE's over the top Judas bs.

Or taking Michelle Obama's words out of context.

Or the Farrakhan insinuation.

And even now, without any real evidence, you persist in this insinuation that Obama is uncomfortable with gay people when his actual position on gay rights is better than Clinton's.

Don't try to play the injured party in this because like the would-be First Husband said, politics is a rough game and if anything, we've proven that we can be just and tenacious and devoted as the Clinton camp and that is something I will not apologize for, particularly when the other side has been just as nasty.

That is pretty funny.

Vile lies. I'm sure it happens all the time.

It should not be coming from a woman running for president.

Mrs. Clinton has repeated some pretty big whoppers and has been caught. Does that effect how any of her supporters see her? I have had problems with candidates of my choice and have discussed how much I dislike aspects of their personalities and some things they have done. I do not think that recognizing a fault is a defect but an awareness of a persons behavior. Blind indifference is not a very attractive character trait.

108. There is an obsessive quality
to the need to smear.

It will be interesting (or rather disgusting) to watch the gloating and glee should Obama gain the nomination.
And my guess is that the smearing and attacks on Hillary will continue - although not quite so virulently. but every now and again - they just won't be able to stop themselves.

And maybe then - if the campaign unfolds that way - their will be too many tempting opportunities for Obama detractors and they will toss in the odd snipe and point out that Hillary would have been the better candidate to take on McCain. (She undoubtedly IS btw.)

With Hillary leading the party it would be a sure fire groundbreaking win in November.

42. They don't even care about the Rev. Wright story!
The story that might turn all those Indies and Rethugs off that voted for Obama in the primaries. Dems and Obama fans may have forgotten but when Hannity gets through publishing more videos during the GE...they will wake up and see we have a little problem. The Rethugs want Obama to win...that's why they are holding back on the videos. He can't hold a candle to J. McCain's military experience and we can count on another terrorist threat just in time for the election.

What do you, think it's gonna be some big surprise when the GOP rolls it out for an encore?

It amazes me to think that after Hannity and CNN and MSNBC pumped that story non-stop for a week, after talk radio and newspapers all over the country covered it for day, and after Obama gave a major addess dealing with it, there would be a single politically-aware person in America that hasn't already heard it.

Y'all are acting like it's gonna be some big new thing to people. I hate to break this to you, but it isn't.

I know that. Hannity bought the tapes of all his sermons and he has plenty more videos of shocking comments that we haven't seen yet. He's just wet our appetite and more will be put out for the media to chew on during the GE. I am really fearful of this happening and is one of the reasons I'm glad Hillary is hanging in there. By the way... Hannity won't put any more out now because they want to run against Obama...they really fear that fighter named Hillary. Bill and Hill beat them twice plus the impeachment...what make them think they can beat her now...they can't.

90. Sorry, no link. You'll have to do your own Google.
It was discussed on TV the week the tape were exposed. I also heard it on Hannity when I turned him on because I couldn't take all the Hillary bashing on MSNBC and CNN. There is only so much one can take without turning the channel. Frankly it was a relief and I find I often have no other choice. He has hours of more tapes in his dirty little hands. No one has heard them yet so I don't know what they will expose...maybe nothing... believe it or not at your own peril. I'm frankly worried.

PS. Wright sold the tapes to Hannity.

117. You're being very naive if you think
you've seen the last of the Rev Wright story. The pubs are salivating and the thought of tying the democratic nominee to an "anti-American" preacher. One who thinks the US government created the AIDS virus to genocide the blacks. The 527 ads practically write themselves and the indies will respond just like the pubs hope they will. They aren't going to care about all the social good that the church has done, the military service the Rev Wright has under his belt - there will be no context. All they're going to see is a "scary black man" saying goddamn America and the fact that Sen Obama refuses to denounce him.

The only people that are paying attention now are the political animals. The general population will start really tuning in during the conventions. History has proven that over and over.

16. I Always Thought This Story Was Second Hand
From the little I paid attention to this story, it seemed that Clinton got the story from someone who told it to her on the campaign trail. That seems to fall on the guy telling her the story, not Clinton.

However, that doesn't really explain her IWR vote or her public support for the neo-cons con man Ahmed Chalabi, for whom her campaign strategist Mark Penn lobbied.

I think the sniper story was eye-rolling, but hardly a disqualifier. It is her policy decisions that bother me much more.

19. many of us were never duped - it was a true story and happens every day
somewhere in America. If the details were a little off then there is another story just like it down the road.

30,000 die each year because they don't have the right health insurance.

kuddos for Hillary for bringing it up. Too bad she has so damaged her credibility that everything she says will be over analyzed.

More importantly knowing the policies isn't going to get the change that is needed. Obama is going to mobilize the national will that is necessary to get it passed.

She speaks millions of words a day it's no wonder that when someone speaks so much they might create an entirely coherent story by misspeaking.

36. I do NOT wish to apologize.
It doesn't matter if some of the details happened to be true. The bottom line is that Hillary used a story about somebody's personal tragedy in her stump speech without verifying the details of the story, and without getting permission from the family. In so doing, she caused additional pain to the family, she cast suspicion on a hospital that had done nothing wrong, she brought discredit to her campaign, but worse than that, she brought discredit to the whole campaign to reform healthcare in this country.

Shooting in the dark and hoping you accidently get some of the details right is no way for a presidential campaign to handle this sort of thing, and I will NOT apologize for saying so.

44. Hillary Did Nothing to Cause Their Pain
Casto said she has been stunned by the amount of negative attention her niece's story generated, and that she was sorry it had hurt the Clinton campaign. She was, and is, she said, a supporter. "Did I vote for Hillary?" she said. "You'd better bet I did."

It was WaPo that leaked the name of the deceased, as well as incorrectly naming the hospital that wanted the $100 up front.

I admit that starting this thread was indeed a little obnoxious. I wanted to see who, if any, of those who went to town on ANOTHER HILLARY LIE!!!!! just might have the courage to say, "yeah, we did get a little out of hand there ..."

72. So many Hillary Clinton lies...this one was merely an exploitive half-truth
A comment says it perfectly from the link:

"But so is Clinton's claim that Bechtel did not get care at another hospital that wanted a $100 pre-payment before seeing her, "

That turns out to be true, but Clinton DID NOT say that. She repeatedly said that the woman "went back a third time" to the same hospital.

93. Any links to what Mrs. Clinton actually said regarding this woman?
The article linked in the OP states that the pregnant woman never actually went to the first hospital because they had sent her a letter regarding her unpaid bill and that she went directly to the second hospital where she was admitted and had her stillborn baby.

From the cited article:

Casto said her niece, who suffered from preeclampsia during her pregnancy, did not seek care at the first hospital she when she fell ill because she knew she did not have the $100 out-of-pocket she believed she would need to be seen. Instead, she went to O'Bleness Memorial Hospital, where her baby was stillborn. Bechtel was later flown to Columbus and died there. She was 35.

I admit I may have been duped by a mis-characterization of Mrs. Clinton's statement, but, throughout this whole brouhaha, I was under the impression that the claim was that the pregnant woman WENT to the first hospital and died as a result of being refused care.

The key to this discussion is the precise phrasing used by Mrs. Clinton in her speeches. If she said or implied that the woman WENT to the first hospital and was refused care, then the opprobrium she has received is warranted. If she said or implied something different, please advise.

I checked the first 200 or so of the 790,000 Google responses on the topic and did not find any that I found credible.

And as far as "This thread is not for debating", threads on DU evolve many ways. It is not for you to dictate the purpose of a thread. I raised valid points about your premise, i.e. that the story was true and the statements by Mrs Clinton were accurate, which they were not.

You are contributing to the perception that facts, logic, and truth have no place neither in the Clinton campaign nor among her supporters. You should be ashamed of yourself.

There are millions more of us Obama supporters who are not bashers, who did not think this was an outrage and would vote for her if she is the democratic nominee.
To take the tiny subsection of Obama supporters here who may have done so is an inaccurate sample, in my opinion, and does not warrant the broad brush denunciations and insults that I see here...

I say the same thing to supporters of either candidate.
