GALLUP NEWS SERVICE

PRINCETON, NJ -- A new Gallup survey finds Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry enjoying a slight lead over President George W. Bush, while Bush's approval ratings remain relatively unchanged, but for the most part in negative territory. The president's continuing strength is in the public's perception of how well he is fighting the war on terrorism, while his performance ratings in other areas -- the economy, foreign affairs, the situation in Iraq, energy policy, and prescription drugs for older Americans -- all elicit higher disapproval than approval.

The poll, conducted June 3-6, overlapped news of former President Ronald Reagan's death. Some of the results reported here could be affected by this news.

The poll finds Kerry leading Bush in the presidential contest by 49% to 44% among registered voters, and 50% to 44% among likely voters.

1. Encouraging, but the difference between the two polls means that...
...there's a little sliver of Kerry's support that's not likely to vote!

Find your fellows out there and make a list; make sure they go to vote!

2. Well Kerry still leads in 11
of the battleground states, while Bush leads in 5. Things are still very encouraging for Kerry.

3. If the numbers were reversed they'd say bush holds a "strong" lead...
:puke: Gimme a break. Six points among likely voters is a respectable lead.

6. I think you're right
Kerry is only 1 or 2 points away from the significant +7% lead which is Electoral College landslide territory.

9. Exactly. When Bush is ahead it is always, sizable or commanding.
If Kerry were leading by 20 they would say voters were ambivalent about Kerry.

5. Interestingly, *'s approval # went up with this poll
to 49%. As always, Gallup gives * a higher approval number than any of the other polls....yet the election match-up shows how weak that supposed support is. * slipped to a gallup low of 46% on 5/7-9, yet at that time he was ahead in the match-up (48-47; 47-45 w/ nader)...now Kerry has a large lead.

7. I'd rather BUsh's approval rating be lower
than Kerry to be ahead in the horse race polls.

8. I saw this posted on Free Republic
They instinctively started screaming about how it wasn't a poll of likely voters (and therefore useless) until someone pointed out that Kerry does lead Bush among all-important likely voters. Now the freeps are in full panic mode. I love it!

10. Check out Kos, he has the others listed with the Nader factor.
Should still be available in the first two pages. Gallup is way out of synch with the others.

12. Things look really good.
I wish the election were being held like at the end of this month or something.
